Behaviours around food consumption can range from 'normal' to disordered, where some people may develop eating patterns that suggest a preoccupation with food or weight. This preoccupation can lead to inappropriate compensatory behaviours, such as purging or excessive exercise, or dysphoric mood following food consumption. This article discusses the continuum between 'normal' eating behaviours and eating disorders, with a focus on binge eating behaviour and binge eating disorder. The author also describes the use of a screening tool for identifying binge eating behaviour and suggests ways in which nurses might support patients in addressing disordered eating behaviours.</p>","PeriodicalId":19327,"journal":{"name":"Nursing standard (Royal College of Nursing (Great Britain) : 1987)","volume":" ","pages":"63-68"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142018174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article identifies the nature and prevalence of imposter phenomenon among nursing students, newly registered nurses and senior nurses. It also explores the effects of this phenomenon for nurses and healthcare organisations, including its potential association with burnout, suboptimal performance and a lack of career development. Evidence suggests that addressing imposter phenomenon is not something individuals can accomplish by themselves, but that it requires system-level interventions from healthcare organisations and higher education institutions. This could raise awareness, promote recognition and improve resources and training to mitigate the detrimental effects of this phenomenon on healthcare provision.</p>","PeriodicalId":19327,"journal":{"name":"Nursing standard (Royal College of Nursing (Great Britain) : 1987)","volume":" ","pages":"27-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141555231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It should only be undertaken after thorough clinical assessment and when other alternatives have been considered. • The procedure can be anxiety-provoking for the patient, so the nurse should explain what is involved and proceed carefully, while keeping the patient informed throughout. • Due to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infection, it is important to regularly review the patient's need to be catheterised and the catheter should be removed as soon as practically possible. However, nurses' knowledge of health promotion does not always translate to self-care and there are barriers to some aspects of self-care at work, such as healthy eating. Evidence suggests that rates of overweight and obesity in nurses are relatively high and commensurate with the general population, which has implications for their health and well-being and their delivery of health promotion to patients. This article discusses health in the workplace and some of the evidence on overweight and obesity among nurses, including how this may influence their health promotion practice. This highly stressful and demanding situation can lead to breakdowns in communication, difficulty in decision-making and emotional distress for members of the healthcare team. However, debriefing is often not prioritised due to pressures in clinical practice. This article discusses the benefits of debriefing and outlines some of the approaches and tools that may be used. While the standards contained in the Nursing and Midwifery Council The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses, Midwives and Nursing Associates provide nurses with an overarching framework to guide practice, it is important that nurses understand the four main principles that underpin ethical care - autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. To achieve this, it is essential to regularly undertake comprehensive pain assessments, using validated pain assessment tools, for all patients who have undergone a surgical procedure. Inadequate pain assessment may lead to ineffective or inappropriate pain management, which can adversely affect the patient's recovery and increase their risk of developing chronic pain. •  Pain is a subjective experience and therefore requires individualised, comprehensive assessment and management interventions. •  The assessment process for patients with acute pain is fundamental to understanding the patient's current status, informing differential diagnoses regarding the underlying cause of the pain, providing appropriate treatment and monitoring, and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment. •  Pain assessment should not be undertaken as a one-off care activity; it should be completed whenever a patient reports pain and repeated following pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological interventions.
