The model tackles uncertainties in electricity market prices and system imbalance by employing Monte Carlo simulations. While the model provides vast customizability options, the potential demand response benefits for a particular type of consumer, smart electric thermal storage, are the focus of the case study. It is found that such type of operations can be economically feasible for the asset owner, but on the condition that sufficient proportion of the balancing renumeration is shared with the owner by the aggregator.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116294740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ktena, Christos Manassis","doi":"10.1109/RTUCON.2018.8659831","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/RTUCON.2018.8659831","url":null,"abstract":"This work presents the design and implementation of a Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) single phase grid-interactive inverter with the ability to operate both in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. The proposed design consists of a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), single power stage full-bridge topology with a low frequency (LF) transformer connected at the output. The inverter is fully controlled by a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and this enables its seamless connection and disconnection from the grid with uninterrupted power supply to the load. Sinewave voltage with low total harmonic distortion, when in stand-alone mode, and the ability to control the power factor, when in grid-tied mode, are both critical factors for a high-performance system. The design process of such a device is analyzed. A MATLAB/Simulink model of the system has been developed and used for simulations and testing and a full-scale 5kW prototype has been built for testing in real operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114763838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the authors aim to assess the feasibility of phasing out high polluting energy generation methods used for backup power reserves with the more sustainable generation option of wind power. A literature review was conducted to identify sections in the Icelandic grid prone to disturbances more likely to benefit from power reserves; the Westfjords, specifically the Bolungarvík area, was chosen for further analysis. Wind capacity factors were used to calculate the number of wind turbines needed to provide adequate power reserves. It was concluded that 6 Enercon E-103 turbines could match the Bolungarvik diesel power reserve station. A financial assessment was conducted in conjunction to the technical assessment to compare generation costs. Diesel was concluded to be less expensive, however does not consider the recurring cost of fuel, transportation or the social cost.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125322460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate demand response participation in power system balancing, the service must not only provide economic gains for the existing market participants, but it also has to present a viable business case for demand response service providers. Currently, in the Baltic states, there is no demand side participation in balancing markets. To support balancing market development, we analysed the economic potential of demand response for service providers. To forecast market conditions, we employed stochastic simulations for energy market prices and balancing product activation. Furthermore, to calculate the economic gains of a service provider, we used technical parameters of fridges obtained in a demand response pilot study and the demand response aggregation settlement model proposed by the Baltic TSOs and Finish TSO. The preliminary results suggest sufficient financial incentives for future investments.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127495176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An electric test was conducted where various types of grounded electrodes were brought into contact with the insulating layer of the covered conductor. The conductor was energized and the cumulative time was measured until insulation breakdown occurred at the contact point of each of the grounding electrodes. Five different types of electrodes were used. Three of these were round in shape and were used for simulating tree branches with different diameter. One electrode was a copper wire winding specified in covered conductor testing standard and one was aluminum tape. A total of 10 electrodes of each shape were used for better estimation of the variability of breakdown time. The average breakdown times of each type of electrode were notably different but also the variability of breakdown times in case of electrodes of the same type was quite substantial.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125674748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have become popular due to high efficiency, low costs and low emissions level. These power installations have some features, which differ from traditional steam power installations. One of these features is the permissible power reduction when the frequency decreases. This fact can lead to dangerous consequences especially under islanding, when there are no other generation reserves. In some cases, it can result in frequency collapse. This paper is devoted to control algorithm which can help to prevent such emergency. The frequency can be supported at the first seconds of emergency by means of power boosting. Consequently, such measure helps to prevent frequency collapse. The paper includes the structure of proposed power boosting block and the example of block parameters choosing.","PeriodicalId":192943,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTUCON)","volume":"517 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123101556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
