We propose to use Fractional Frequency Reuse for guaranteeing the quality of service for different service flows (SFs) in the system. Our approach includes an architecture which coordinates the allocation of resources in terms of slots (the basic allocation unit in time and frequency domain in anOFDMA frame) between the Radio Resource Controller andthe Radio Resource Agent which resides in the Base Station. The scheme for slot allocation balances between maximizing the overall throughput of the system while guaranteeing the QoS requirements for a mixture of real-time and non real-time SFs. We used simulations to compare four resource allocation schemes that represent various degrees of multi-cell coordination and taking advantage of multiuser diversity. We find a feasible hierarchical coordination combined with intra-cell multiuserdiversity provides large throughput gains compared with noncoordinated schemes.","PeriodicalId":192563,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Mobile WiMAX Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129050739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the large amount of parameters to be taken into account, from physical to upper layers, and the degrees of freedom left to manufacturers and operators, a simulation tool is almost mandatory along the path toward implementation and deployment. However, the level of accuracy of a simulator is a trade-off between the needs of precision in the real behavior modelling and the complexity of the software. In this paper, an IEEE802.16e WirelessMAN-OFDMA simulator that carefully reproduces all aspects is described and its numerical results are comparedto those obtained adopting some, apparently traightforward, approximations.","PeriodicalId":192563,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Mobile WiMAX Symposium","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126512257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, the communication between far away node pairs in large networks is achieved by routing. A route is established between the source node and an intended destination node and the message is sent along this route, one hop at a time. However, the wireless channels between node pairs suffer from the small-scale fading and any degradation in the channel qualities along the route results in the loss of the message or requires establishing a new route. Much recent work on wireless network research focused on cooperative relaying to overcome the effects of small-scale fading. In this work, we propose cooperation-augmented routing which exploits cooperative relaying on top of an routing protocol.","PeriodicalId":192563,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Mobile WiMAX Symposium","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125935396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Be-sides increased quality of life and service, the broadband internet access has a strong economical impact for the selected region, e.g. on the inducement for settlement especially for enterprises. Un-fortunately, still today there is a digital divide between urban and rural areas regarding a basic provision with broadband internet access. That means that today more than 75 million private households and enterprises do not have a satisfying access to modern internet-based applications. This digital divide is mainly caused in economic constraints, because the development and implementation of wired broadband networks especially in rural areas are very cost intensive and can often not be amortized in an acceptable period of time. Taking all this into account this work presents the main results of a project, which has been funded by the program PROFIL of the European Union. It focuses on the usage of IEEE 802.16e (also known as Mobile WiMAX) as a wire-less enhancement in order to form hybrid broadband networks. The project contains a detailed analyze of the requirements of different user groups (professional and private) and an evaluation of the resulting data traffic in 18 different areas. Ad-ditionally, in order to cover these requirements a network dimensioning example of a selected wireless network is described within this work. This provides the basis for an economic analyze in order to evaluate the investment and the operational cost of such a hybrid broadband access approach.","PeriodicalId":192563,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Mobile WiMAX Symposium","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127900404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering conventional wired or wireless infrastructure will cost billions to implement and maintain. A very attractive solution that has proven improved performance in terms of signal quality, coverage area and connection speed consists of using an adaptive smart antenna system in conjunction with IEEE 802.16 WiMAX [1]. This paper presents the design and development of a testbed to analyze the feasibility of utilizing such novel solution. Though supported by the WiMAX standard, a smart antenna system utilizing this radio technology has not been implemented yet. This design serves as a common flexible platform for testing the system as a whole and in part. In particular, we investigate the allocation of users over two frequency bands (i.e., 2 GHz and 5 GHz ones) for a single operator scenario. The same type of RAT is considered for both frequency bands. It is assumed that the operator considered in this work has gained access to the frequency pool with a certain portion of the available spectrum. The operator has access to a non-shared 2 GHz band and to part (or all) of the frequency pool band at 5 GHz. The performance gain is analyzed in terms of higher data throughput, reduced delay and lower blocking probability. The performance is heavily dependent on the channel quality for each user in the considered bands which, in turn, is a function of the path loss and the distance from the base station (BS). The operator will have relevant improvements when user terminals are heterogeneously distributed on the cell, with variable distances from the BS. A gain up to 400 kbps (22%) was obtained with the proposed suboptimal solution.","PeriodicalId":192563,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Mobile WiMAX Symposium","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132321935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
