The most diffused protocols are the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and MQTT. In order to ensure message delivery, CoAP features a retransmission mechanism based on exponential back-off and a finite number of retransmissions, while MQTT relies on TCP. In remote areas lacking fixed terrestrial network infrastructure, the only available Internet access technology is often represented by wireless or satellite links, usually affected by losses and significant delay. At this time, there is no information about MQTT and CoAP performance over high delay links in the literature. The goal of this paper is to provide a quantitative performance analysis of the mentioned IoT protocols over various conditions of offered traffic, packet loss probability and delay. Our findings show that, with default protocol parameters, MQTT offers better performance in terms of throughput in any of the considered scenarios. As far as latency is concerned, CoAP slightly outperforms MQTT in case of low offered traffic, low loss probability and high delay. We suggest to tune CoAP parameters in order to cope with high traffic and high loss probability: the new parameters result in improved latency and throughput in those conditions.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122204411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Badly set parameters on one of the network component may severely impact on the transmission delay and reduce the quality of experience. The cross layer impact should be investigated on to assess the origin of latency. To run cross-layer (from physical layer to application layers) simulations, two approaches are possible: (1) use physical layer models that may not be exhaustive enough to drive consistent analysis or (2) use real physical traces. Driving realistic measurements by using real physical (MAC/PHY) traces inside network simulations is a complex task. We propose to cope with this problem by introducing Cross Layer InFormation Tool (CLIFT), that translates real physical events from a given trace in order to be used inside a network simulator such as ns-2. Our proposal enables to accurately perform analysis of the impact of link layer reliability schemes (obtained by the use of real physical traces) on transport layer performance and on the latency. Such approach enables a better understanding of the interactions between the layers. The main objective of CLIFT is to let us study the protocols introduced at each layer of the OSI model and study their interaction.We detail the internal mechanisms and the benefits of this software with a running example on 4G satellite communications scenarios.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114986270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project SAT4NET, funded under the ARTES 1 program of the European Space Agency (ESA), has the goal of analyzing the technical and economic feasibility of an integrated xDSL/satellite network architecture. The key idea is to exploit the very broad coverage of satellite to provide additional bandwidth to users in a digital divide situation, only when they need it, so as to keep the commercial offer to the users competitive with respect to similar offers by pure terrestrial telecom operators in densely populated areas. In this paper the architecture of such a hybrid network is outlined, along with discussing the key design choices that were identified in the study. Furthermore, results from the performance evaluation study of the network, based on packet-level simulations, are reported to show the effectiveness of the main proposed solutions.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125097921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such an interaction, users aim at maximizing the Quality of Service (QoS) and QoE of their received video while minimizing their individual cost incurred by their video transmission, which is modeled as a repeated game. Given the payoff model of the users, it is shown that adaptive video exchange between selfish autonomous nodes for a deterministic time will not be sustained. However, if video is exchanged over an unlimited or indeterminate period, the nodes have an incentive to cooperate and exchange video streams with QoE-driven rate adaptation based on the trust they build among themselves. Our simulation results show that a tradeoff exists between the QoS and the QoE of the perceived video. Furthermore, it is shown that the expected interaction length has a high impact on such tradeoff.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125961574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimization problem is first formulated to minimize the number of nonzero digits in the whole set of filter coefficients. Then, a simplified Simulated Annealing algorithm is used to solve the problem. This method allows dealing with classical in-band ripple and stop-band rejection constraints, but also allows adding uncommon constraints, like transition band or stop-band shape constraints. For moderate long FIR filters, the proposed approach achieves comparable or better results than previous algorithms. Moreover, the method enables designing longer filters (~ 1500 coefficients) in a few hours, with a 30 to 50% reduction in the number of nonzero digits.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116826149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Out of these protocols, only few can be put in practice, because of their limitations. Mainly, these techniques impose impractical feedback assumption, which requests the feedback to be at the end of each time-slot. In this work, a novel protocol for reliable unicast transmissions over lossy broadcast links is proposed. Our approach represents a variation on the index coding theme, with bursty feedback. A satellite scenario, with the user-downlinks modelled as BPEC, is considered. Each user is downloading a different file composed of a set of distinct packets. Resulting from the channel broadcast nature, unintended users may overhear their neighbours packets. Using the side information and a bipartite graph, to model the problem at hand, allow us to build only instantly-decodable linear combinations, which are decoded by bit-wise XOR operations. These retransmissions occur at the end of every transmission round instead of every time-slot, which is a very realistic assumption in terrestrial wireless, cellular or satellite networks. Our protocol can easily serve an arbitrary number of users. Numerical results show that using our proposed scheme, rates very close to the capacity of the BPEC with feedback can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":192172,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 13th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121803582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a DVB-S2/RCS2 testbed, able to reproduce all functionalities specified for higher and lower layers (HL and LL) of the protocol stack, down to the physical layer characteristics, which are instead accounted by means of a channel emulator for both return and forward links. The presented testbed turns out to be a formidable tool for research investigation and overall system design thanks to the implemented features and the flexible architecture, allowing easy reconfiguration and extensions of functionalities according to specific purposes.
