This study focuses on modeling the relationships between international roughness index (IRI) and a total of 10 types of pavement distress, including alligator, block, wheel path length, wheel path longitudinal, non-wheel path longitudinal, transverse crackings, patches, bleeding, raveling areas, and pumping. The data recorded under the Long-Term Pavement Performance was used to develop the models. Data sets covering General Pavement Studies from seven states of the United States were used in modeling. The study used modeling approaches, including nonlinear regression analysis, multivariate adaptive regression splines, and artificial neural networks (ANN), in which IRI was the dependent variable and pavement distress was the independent variable. In the developed models, 0.516, 0.623, and 0.684 regression coefficients values were obtained for nonlinear regression analysis, multivariate adaptive regression splines, and artificial neural networks approaches, respectively. The analysis results have determined that the artificial neural networks technique performs more successfully than the other techniques. The statistical error analyses of the root mean square error, Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency, mean absolute error, and normalized root mean square error also showed that the same modeling approach performs more successfully. With these data generated from a universally used database, it has been determined once again that ANN is the most efficient mathematical approach in modeling the relationships between surface distresses and IRI.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"26 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139171272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, EPS is not mostly recyclable because it might not be economically feasible to store, transport, and process EPS so that it becomes recyclable. Therefore, alternative waste management strategies are urgently needed. The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the potential use of waste EPS in asphalt binder modification. As part of this study, a base asphalt binder with a Penetration grade of 70/100 was modified with waste EPS in four different ratios (0%, 1.5%, 3% and 4.5%, by weight of asphalt binder). The modified asphalt binder specimens were tested based on several physical (penetration, ductility, softening points and viscosity) as well as rheological/Superpave binder grading system tests including Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO), Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR). Based on the tests results, rheological and engineering properties of the modified asphalt binders were compared with the ones of the base binder so that effect of waste EPS addition on the properties of the base binder was evaluated; and how the Superpave binder grades of the modified binders were changed with the additions of waste EPS was discussed. It was found out that modifying asphalt binders with EPS provided them with a better rutting resistance at the expense of lowering their fatigue and low temperature cracking resistance. Overall, it could be concluded that waste EPS can be potentially used in the asphalt binder modification by paying special attention to these factors, and it should be noted that using waste EPS in the asphalt binder modification has many economic and environmental benefits.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131106207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the public transportation system was significantly impacted both during and after the Covid-19 outbreak. To minimize these impacts, it is important to know the users' sentiment and improve the service quality accordingly to change the users' attitude towards public transportation systems. Natural language processing is used to make meaningful inferences about user sentiment using various analysis techniques. Historically, surveys have also been used for years to learn users' opinions about transportation services. In this study, this traditional method was used to determine the satisfaction of public transportation users. The categorization model employed in the system developed as part of this work is based on algorithms such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Random Forest (RF), and Multi Logistic Regression (MLR). The dataset contains information gathered from the online survey. Of the models created utilizing the training dataset, it was discovered that the LSTM model offered the highest accuracy. Users' comments can help improve public transportation operators' operations, improve service quality, and monitor actions accordingly. Therefore, in this study, users' emotions were classified as positive, negative, or neutral based on the comments.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128212036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Situations such as the transition of schools to remote education, remote working, and people's fear of becoming infected have had a strong impact on public transport ridership. In this article, rail transit systems ridership data were utilized to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the travel behaviour of adults, students and elderly people for the city of Izmir, Turkey. The rail transit system included one mass rapid transit (MRT) and two light rapid transit (LRT) lines. Due to operational differences of rail transit systems, the analyses were carried out for the ridership of each mode separately. Within the scope of the study, user-based descriptive statistics were determined, and ridership changes were investigated before, during and after the pandemic. The statistical significance in ridership fluctuations were evaluated via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The results showed that the pandemic had a negative impact on ridership on all lines and all groups of travelers. Student ridership increased with the opening of schools after pandemic while travel behaviour of elderly groups were permanently changed after COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133960090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clean and renewable energy sources are one of the most important research topics in all countries. The word piezo-electric that, means energy from pressure, is the ability of the material to change an electric field or electric potential as a result of mechanical pressure applied to some materials. This effect is directly related to the change in polarization density inside the material. If the material is not short-circuited, the applied loading and stress creates a voltage in the material. Energy production with materials that provide piezoelectric energy harvesting placed within asphalt pavements is one of the topics that road pavement engineers have been researching in recent years. In this study, experiments were made using different sensors to improve energy harvesting from asphalt pavements. The difference of this study from other studies was that different piezoelectric sensors were placed in the asphalt mixture samples and the measurements of the resulting voltages were made. The obtained results showed that this method is encouraging for energy harvesting and might be the answer for highway transport demand in the future.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128772221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SBS modification results in different material characteristics on the neat bitumen depending on the SBS type and of course the amount of the SBS used in the modification. Within the scope of this study, morphological characterisation of SBS modified samples involving different amount of SBS copolymer (4%, 5% and 6%) were examined by using innovative microscopies as AFM and CLSM. The topographic and phase properties of the PMB samples were obtained by using AFM and the dispersion and interaction of SBS copolymer with the bitumen were interpreted based on the images obtained by CLSM. As a result it was concluded that, the amount of the copolymer used in the modification process directly effects the morphological properties of the final product (PMB).","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134106033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the importance of railways in the transportation sector is increasing, the demand for sleepers is also increasing. Although wooden and steel sleepers were used in rail systems in the past, today the most widely used sleeper type in the world is reinforced concrete sleepers. Among these reinforced concrete sleepers, pre-stressed sleepers are the most widely used, popular type of sleeper that can be produced in many countries. The two main production methods of pre-stressed sleepers are the ribbed reinforced system and the non-ribbed reinforced anchor plated system. In this study, B70 type pre-stressed concrete sleepers, have been investigated with the positive moment determination tests at the rail seat with progressive failure observations according to EN 13230-2:2016 standard. After tests, detailed cracking, failure, and fatigue analyzes under increasing test loads were performed with ANSYS® finite element analysis results for both types of pre-stressed sleepers. According to results, A-type sleepers have 50% more compression stress at the first crack formation load (Frr) than N-type sleepers and According to the first 0.05 mm permanent crack formation load (Fr0.05), it is seen that 25% higher stresses occur in A-type design than N-type design under Fr0.05 load. The results obtained through the analysis have been compared with the actual field measurement results, which have become more and more popular in the world in recent years. In this direction, various suggestions have been made for the development of concrete railway sleeper models.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"186 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133793450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is aimed to determine the accuracy of these expressions by obtaining the bearing capacity parameters of the subgrade material with different water contents from laboratory experiments and comparing the results obtained with the empirical expressions in the literature. Shear strength and CBR values of five samples prepared at 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, and 20% water contents were obtained experimentally. The experimental results obtained and the results calculated using the correlations found in the literature were compared. As a result of the study, the shear strength values obtained from the shear vane test, which is recommended to be preferred in terms of ease of application, were used in the selected correlation relations and CBR values were calculated. By comparing the experimental and calculated CBR values, the approximation accuracies of the existing correlation expressions were presented and it was seen that it was possible to find the CBR value with a maximum accuracy of 90%. In addition, this study presents a new correlation that gives the relationship between shear strength and CBR using the data obtained from the experimental results. With the new equation created; After the shear strength value was obtained experimentally, it was seen that the CBR value could be found with 96% accuracy.","PeriodicalId":192007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Innovative Transportation","volume":"7 18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128587354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
