The manufacturing facility produces two-type items in the first stage and a service centre serves two-class customers in the second stage. Each customer served by the service centre depletes one unit of dedicated item produced by the manufacturing facility. The manager must make production and service capacity allocation decisions at any time. We first formulate the optimal service capacity allocation problem as a Markov decision process and show the optimal service policy is an extension of the well-known optimal service scheduling policy for classical service system. We then develop several heuristic production scheduling policies when the service centre is regulated by the optimal scheduling policy. Numerical examples verify the effectiveness and efficiencies of the proposed heuristics.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129948817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes the problem of developing portable high-level Mobile CPS applications difficult, since applications are typically written for specific devices. To this end, this paper present a framework that relies on abstracting the representation of the mobile devices in a manner that allows the system to fully utilize the capabilities of the hardware while providing a simplified interface to the enduser that can work across different devices. This framework incorporates a physics engine to handle different physical models of different mobile devices to ensure better control. We assess the behavior of our proposed framework through real experiments conducted in our Mobile CPS lab with various iRobot Creates. We show that we can achieve better control accuracy through exploiting the physical characteristics of the mobile devices, rather than relying solely on the driver interface of the devices.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132993158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, for a multi-agent systems (MAS) modelling of an ITS, the computation burden is large, as it involves the computation of the state changing of all the agents. Further, if we consider simulation based optimization, which can be simply understood as an intelligent way of running a number of micro-simulations, the computation burden is huge. Moreover, there are multiple objective optimization problems in the ITS. The Vector Ordinal Optimization (VOO) method is a powerful tool for multi-objective optimization. In this paper, we apply VOO to the problem of optimizing the stop times and delay time of an ITS. We test the method on a 4 intersection lattice road network, and on the 18 intersection road network of the Zhongguancun area of Beijing. Compared with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) method, the VOO method can achieve a speedup of factor of more than 150, with only a little sacrifice of performance.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134573890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new prototype of living is eco-communities which consist of a set of buildings and associated devices for energy generation, conversion, consumption, storage and recovery networks trying to be self-sufficient as much as possible. The optimized operation of an eco-community, however, is challenging since multiple energy devices and energy processes are highly coupled; and the time coupling state dynamics in building models interact with each other in a complicated way due to the device coupling. This paper presents the integrated optimization of energy devices, energy processes, renewable energy and waste-to-energy conversion of a small eco-community to reduce daily costs while satisfying time-varying building needs. A mixed-integer optimization model of energy networks is established, and the problem is solved by using branch-and-cut. After linearizing all the nonlinear terms, near-optimal solutions are still difficult to obtain efficiently due to the complicated interactions among constraints. To improve the efficiency, a two-phase approach is developed. Numerical testing shows that the method can efficiently generate high quality operation schedules for the eco-community, and the total energy cost is reduced by this optimized operation, e.g., making efficient use of energy conversion and using the energy resources when they are cheap.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130565697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We solve the rescheduling problem by revisiting a finite time horizon mixed integer linear programming model from the related literature. First, we adapt the framework to regional networks, in which stations are close and the network is mainly constituted by single tracks; second, to solve train conflicts that may occur in the rescheduled timetable after the chosen time horizon, we enhance the model by an iterative heuristic algorithm that solves such conflicts. The presented approach is applied to a real data set related to a large portion of a regional network in Southern Italy, showing its effectiveness in providing a physically realizable rescheduled solution in a very short computational time.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121916011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a detailed analysis of the grasping process, the problem of position/force control is converted into the position control along with force monitoring. Then, a strategy of sliding mode-based robust position control is presented and its stability is demonstrated analytically. As compared with the traditional position/force switching control which usually induces an unstable transition, the switching problem is eliminated by the presented scheme. Moreover, only a piecewise position trajectory planning is needed for the robust position controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated by experimental investigations. The scheme provides a sound base for the execution of practical microassembly tasks.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127613981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It deploys the Rank Order Clustering (ROC) method to automatically group all existing data sensors and actuators of the system to the Key Performance Indicators of the system. EventCluster (EC) is a cause-effect relationship data clustering tool that detects the interrelationship between field data and system performance parameters in real-time. Through its simple data filtering mechanism it can be used as a precursor to real-time sensitivity analysis. The underpinning logic of the technique is that the raw data can be obtained from field data acquisition devices and the degree of their influence on key system performance indicators can be measured in realtime with minimum computational effort. Normally monitoring and control systems are equipped with sensors and actuators that provide information for a pre-specified function regardless of other parts of the system. The global assumption of method is that a system performance or state is a function of all the inputs of the system, unless proven otherwise. In the proposed method all the inputs and outputs of the system are assumed to affect one another unless proven otherwise. In this paper, an experiment in Cement Kiln operation case demonstrates the suitability and applicability of EventClustering modeling method in industrial applications. We use the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) sensors and actuators installed to monitor the operations of Kilns in Cement manufacturing process and its contagious operations as a case study for proof of concept. The sensors and actuators data collected builds the input data for measuring the performance (output) of the Kiln. The EventCluster algorithm resides within the control center of the SCADA system to assess the contribution of each input to the overall key performance indicators (output) of the process. This method improves the quality of data analysis and reduces computation overhead on the control system.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121333355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To reduce energy consumption and improve occupancy comfort, HVAC fault detecting is important. In our recent work, a synergistic integration of Kalman Filter and Statistical Process Control (SPC) was used for fault detection of chillers based on a gray-box model. This paper builds on that framework to detect cooling coil faults. Major enhancements in several aspects are made, including the establishment, improvement and validation of a (nonlinear) gray-box model and the extension of method to the nonlinear case by using the unscented Kalman filter to provide prediction and SPC control limits. The method is tested by using a simulation model of a building on the UConn campus. Numerical results show that the method can detect both sudden and gradual faults of cooling coils with high detection rates and low false alarm rates.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"274 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123359348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
