This problem is particularly relevant in the automotive industry where several robots perform welding operations to assemble and join a car body. The main contributions of this article are: to model the path coordination problem in a graph based way similar to job shop scheduling problem; to solve the path coordination problem by a branch and bound optimization algorithm exploiting the cylindrical structure of the problem. A computational study is presented where the correctness and performance of the new algorithm are evaluated by comparing it with a Mixed Integer Linear Programming formulation, solved by a general purpose package: good results are presented, with computing time differences of even three orders of magnitude. Finally, the algorithm has been interfaced with a state-of-the-art simulation software: within this framework an industrial test case from the automotive industry is solved. A straightforward way to modify pre-computed robot programs, implementing the optimized schedule is also described in pseudo-code. The efficiency of the solver and the robustness of the generated robot programs make the method very appealing in practice.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121932079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many researches and projects have been done with a variety approaches in those areas. This paper reviews two solar energy systems: daylighting system and photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems are analyzed. An innovative parabolic trough solar lighting/thermal (PTL/T) system is proposed by combining the advantages of both systems. PTL/T system uses parabolic trough collector (PTC) as a solar collector. The sunlight collected is split by a cold mirror into visible light and inferred rays. The visible light and IR are used for daylighting and heating generation respectively. The basic structure of PTL/T is outlined and described. Its feasibility is analyzed by the calculation of system efficiency, annual savings by unit area of collector, break-even capital cost, and greenhouse gas reduction. The results show that the presented PTL/T system is a possible low price and high efficiency solution for the utilization of solar energy in building energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123999606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In most cases, a highly trained specialist is required to setup a system, which drives up the installation costs. Standard text-based methods for programming robots oftentimes result in programs that are difficult to maintain due to their complex program structure and editing methods. This is a major issue in today's manufacturing environment where product changeover is often measured in months. This paper identifies some of the major difficulties in creating robot programs, distinguishing between creating and maintaining the logical program structure and creating robot paths. Next it describes several recent attempts to simplify industrial robot programming, focusing on those two aspects. This paper then analyzes the applicability, strengths and weakness of various approaches assessing them in light of novice, intermediate and advanced users. Lastly, some recommendations are given for further development in this area of simplifying industrial robot programming.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125804480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem aims to minimize total energy cost of operating RGVs for transporting the cargos subject to real time constraints. This work focuses on solving an optimal dispatching problem with a single RGV having multiple capacity. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for the problem, which takes account of various constraints, including loading, deadlock avoidance, precedence, time window and capacity constraints. Difficulties of identifying and representing the constraints are revealed. Computational studies performed on randomly generated instances are used to validate the model and demonstrate challenges of solving the problem to a large scale.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124647101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To extend their application to remote or hazardous environments, one must guarantee some measure of failure tolerance. One way to do this is to use kinematically redundant robots that have additional degrees of freedom. They are inherently robust to locked joint failures but the size of the reachable workspace after a failure depends on the design (and control) of the robot. The existence of such a workspace can be guaranteed by imposing a suitable set of artificial joint limits prior to a failure, however, this also limits the reachable pre-failure workspace. This work demonstrates how one can calculate an optimal tradeoff between pre-failure and post-failure workspace by determining the appropriate artificial joint limits. This is illustrated on a three degree-of-freedom planar robot generated from a PA-10 robot.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127286024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More and more specialized products, with successively shorter life cycles seek to respond to the frequent market changes, demanding an agile and flexible industrial system that at the same time is economically efficient. A large portion of the industrial companies manufacture their products in batch-based manufacturing systems using either the job shop or the traditional cell layouts. However, in those arrangements there is always a compromise solution between efficiency and flexibility. Seeking to provide a solution to this difficulty, the concept of virtual cell manufacturing appears, which encompasses the high routing flexibility of job shop production with the efficiency in terms of setup of the traditional cell configuration. However, the virtual cell layout can also present the disadvantages of both layouts, such as longer transport times and the need for additional resource capacity. Given this scenario, this paper seeks to investigate, through simulation and design of experiments, the performance of the virtual cell layout in comparison with job shop and cellular layouts, identifying the conditions in which the application of the former layout is advantageous compared with the others. These layouts are studied through the aid of models with identical capacities and subject to the same demand, and their production sequences are generated by priority criteria. A significant number of factors, levels and replications are used in order to delimit appropriately the scope in which virtual cells effectively lead to competitive advantages.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130737806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Queuing theory and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) are two methods commonly used to analyze lead time reduction efforts. Queuing models offer the advantage of fast analytical solutions, whereas DES analyses allow incorporation of high levels of system detail. There is great potential in the coordinated use of these methods. However, it is important to fully understand the assumptions and approximations of queuing theory as it is extended to increasingly realistic scenarios. Here, a novel formulation of queuing model is demonstrated for systems with both rework and process downtime. An emphasis is placed on the extensive testing of the queuing model vs. DES under a wide range of conditions, including various levels of rework rate, arrival variability, and process downtime. The queuing model proves to be effective at estimating lead time in all conditions examined.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128852965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we address the issue of selection of suppliers in order to ensure that the procurement process in a manufacturing or service supply chain selects suppliers so as to minimize carbon emissions. The specific problem we address pertains to that of an orchestrator or a procurement planner who wishes to put together a green procurement network consisting of strategic suppliers. Our approach decomposes the problem into two stages. In Stage 1 (information elicitation), the orchestrator uses a green budget to offer appropriate incentives to the suppliers to report their carbon emissions accurately. The incentives are determined using an approach based on proper scoring rules. Having obtained emissions data in Stage 1, the orchestrator identifies a pool of suppliers in Stage 2 (green supplier selection) to minimize the quantum of carbon emissions of the procurement process. The paper focuses on Stage 1 of the problem and develops an incentive compatible mechanism for elicitation of emission estimates. We illustrate the proposed mechanism with a stylized example and also with detailed simulation results.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125524135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real system parameters are often unknown or partially unknown and need to be identified through historical data, which are currently acquired by heuristically designed experiments. Without quality sensor data, model calibration is prone to fail, even if the calibration algorithm is appropriate. In this paper, we propose a Fisher-information-matrix (FIM)-based metric to examine the sensor data measurements and how their quality is related to the model calibration quality. It aims to provide quantitative guidance in the calibration cycle of a whole building model that takes as many variables as possible into consideration for the sake of accuracy. Our concerned model is based on well-known physical laws and tries to avoid simplification, thereby leading to a highly discontinuous system with model switches due to the seasonal or daily variation and other reasons. Such a model is implemented in the form of a software package. Hence, no explicit mathematical expression can be given. A key technical challenge is that the complexity of the model prohibits the analytical derivation of FIM, while the numeric calculation is sensitive to sensor noise and model switches. We, hence, propose to adopt an automatic differentiation method, which exploits the operator overload feature of object oriented programming language, for robust numerical FIM calculation.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121525424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Challenges in energy storage with batteries have been identified as a major barrier of a broader electrification of cars. Expensive raw materials, a high scrap rate in production of cells and the lack of a not fully automated process chain lead to high costs of electric cars. Within this paper a new approach, named Single-Point-Analysis, is presented to setup inline quality assurance in the production of cell foils using optical measurement techniques. The filtering algorithm observes the inter-point distance of each single point in the range of interest. Furthermore a mean distance for each single measurement point is calculated by considering the distances to its direct neighbors. The main focus is the detection of particles and defects like scratches on the cell surface. It is demonstrated that the developed analysis is able to clearly identify these typical failures of cells.","PeriodicalId":191166,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122708337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
