Many aspects of the biology of this species are still unknown. The present work presents a complete description of the different components of the digestive tract of P. axelrodi, analyzing its global anatomical arrangement, the adjacent glands (liver and pancreas) and the previously ignored pyloric caeca, using histological and histochemical techniques with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Three levels of analysis were performed: macroscopic anatomy, histology of the gastrointestinal tract and scanning electron microscopy of mucosal surfaces. The intestinal coefficient (Ci) of P. axelrodi calculated here (0.94) is within the expected range for a carnivorous species. The anatomy of the alimentary and the resulting Ci is consistent with carnivorous diet in line with dietary studies in the wild in this species. The digestive tract, including adjacent glands (liver and pancreas), presented a relatively conserved general pattern within that described for other species of the family Characidae, especially at the histological level.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67200254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our main goal was to analyze the relationship between water-level fluctuations and the diet and the body condition of Trachelyopterus galeatus in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The fish used in the study were sampled quarterly along nine years, at nine sampling stations. Our results showed that diet of T. galeatus varied in response to oscillations in the hydrometric level, with the consumption of terrestrial invertebrates being positively related to hydrometric level, while the consumption of aquatic invertebrates was negatively related. The trophic niche breadth and feeding activity were not affected by hydrometric level, but the fish body condition was positively affected. The high food plasticity allows T. galeatus to consume the most available resources (e.g., terrestrial invertebrates in high water levels), which probably contributed to the increase in its body condition in higher hydrometric levels. In summary, the hydrological dynamic is fundamental for the diet variation of omnivorous fish, which can take advantage of the resource availability according to the hydrometric level, increasing its body condition when allochthonous resources as terrestrial invertebrates are supposed to be more available.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67200409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Newly discovered molecular data have been used to justify the elevation of these subgenera to genera. Yet morphological analyses to diagnose the two genera are lacking. The aim of this study is to provide a generic diagnosis and a taxonomic key to the species within the family Profundulidae based on morphology. The genus Tlaloc is diagnosed on the basis of five unique characters, among which are the prominent and oval-shaped mesethmoid, exceeding the posterior margins of the vomer; the anterior portion of the parasphenoid making contact with the mesethmoid and extend beyond the center of the mesethmoid; and a reduced autopterotic fossa. Profundulus is diagnosed here based on the following characters: the mesethmoid is small, crescent-shaped, and does not extend beyond the margins of the vomer; the anterior portion of the parasphenoid just contacting the mesethmoid and not extending beyond the center of the mesethmoid; a large autopterotic fossa. For each genus, description and distribution ranges are provided as well as a key for identification of the species.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67200199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, mature males were hormonally induced with a single dose of carp pituitary extract (5 mg/kg body weight). Semen was collected and evaluated. Two cryoprotectants were tested to compose the diluents: dimethyl acetamide (DMA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), in two concentrations (8% and 10%), + 5.0% glucose + 10% egg yolk. The semen was diluted in a 1: 4 ratio (semen: extender), packed in 0.5 mL straws and frozen in a dry shipper container in liquid nitrogen vapors. After thawing, sperm kinetics, sperm morphology and DNA integrity of cryopreserved sperm were evaluated. Pseudoplatystoma corruscans males produced semen with sperm motility > 80%. After thawing, all treatments provided semen with total sperm motility > 40%, with no significant difference (P < 0.05) between them, as well as between the other sperm kinetic parameters evaluated. The treatments with DMA provided a smaller fragmentation of the DNA of the gametes. Sperm malformations were identified in both fresh and cryopreserved semen, with a slight increase in these malformations being identified in sperm from thawed P. corruscans semen samples.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67200496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pyrrhulina is the second most speciose lebiasinid genus and it is also the one with the most taxonomic uncertainties. In this context, the present study focused on the Pyrrhulina morphospecies found in a number of different drainage basins in South America to test the alternative proposals on the arrangement of the taxonomic units found within what is assumed to be a single nominal species, Pyrrhulina australis, based on a DNA Barcoding approach. The results of the analyses indicate that Pyrrhulina australis is a species complex, with intraspecific (within-group) genetic distances of up to 3.74%, well above the Optimal Threshold of 1.79% defined in the present study. The species delimitation analyses revealed a surprising level of diversification among the morphospecies evaluated, in particular, in the clade that encompasses Pyrrhulina australis (from the Paraguay River) + P. cf. rachoviana (Lower Paraná River), P. aff. australis I (Araguaia River)/II (Paraguay River)/III (Upper Paraná River)/IV(Guaporé River),and P. marilynae (Teles Pires River), which were arranged in six distinct evolutionary lineages that align with the geographical distribution of the respective drainage basins.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135658868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both genera are diagnosed based on unique synapomorphies among members of the Cheirodontinae related to shape, size, number and arrangement of teeth in the jaw bones. Prodontocharax melanotus, from the upper rio Madeira basin, Brazil and Bolivia, is redescribed, and a new species is described from the rio Huallaga basin, Peru. The genus Amblystilbe and its type-species, A. howesi, are redescribed from the Amazonas River basin, Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, and Prodontocharax alleni is considered a junior synonym of A. howesi. The two species of Prodontocharax are distinguished by the color pattern, number of lamellae of the olfactory rosette in male and female and number of gill rakers, and differ from A. howesi by the number and shape of teeth, color pattern and number of branched anal-fin rays. Four hundred fish were arranged in 20 boxes of 180 L in the recirculation system. These were fed with isoprotein diets (32% CP), until apparent satiation, with four levels of marine fish oil rich in PUFAs-ô3 inclusion (In% = 0, 3, 6, and 9), for 105 days. After, males were hormonally induced to spermiation, and semen was collected after 226 ATUs. Parameters evaluated were osmolality, seminal volume and color, spermatic concentration, sperm morphology, membrane integrity and, sperm motility (total and progressive motility, velocity curvilinear, straight line and average path, linearity and rectilinearity coefficients, trajectory oscillation, head lateral displacement amplitude, and cross-beat frequency). Seminal volume was greater in the In-0 and In-3 groups. Inclusion of PUFAs-ô3 positively influenced the kinetic parameters, as treatment with 6% and 9% of inclusion fish oil resulted in higher values for most of these parameters and did not differ statistically from each other. Thus, it is concluded that the addition of PUFAs-ô3 to the feed of breeders significantly improved the seminal quality of A. lacustris males.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135057083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We sampled specimens every two months, between March 2019 and January 2020. The population was evaluated for sex ratio, reproductive activity, growth pattern, condition factor, size at the first sexual maturation, spawning type, and fecundity. We analyzed 180 specimens, which showed a sex ratio of 1.6 males for each female across the whole period, with 2.3 males for each female during the period of greatest reproductive activity. The peak of reproductive activity coincided with higher precipitation periods and was partially predicted by factors such as water temperature, stream discharge, dissolved oxygen, substrate complexity, and electrical conductivity. The length where 50% and 100% of population to reach sexual maturity was 18.0 and 22.0 mm for males and 19.7 and 27.0 mm for females. The oocyte diameters showed a bimodal frequency, with at least two batches of oocytes. The average fecundity of 197 oocytes. The results indicate that this species presents an opportunistic strategy, and the tactics that make up this strategy depend on variations in both the physical structure of the habitat and physicochemical aspects of the water.","PeriodicalId":19103,"journal":{"name":"Neotropical Ichthyology","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135658863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
