Their chemical structures were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopies. FB-Por 1 and 2 show a very intense UV-visible absorption band at 419 nm, which is attributed to the Soret band. In addition, the relatively weak bands at 516, 551, 591 and 647 nm are assigned to the Q bands. Upon a photoexcitation wavelength with 430 nm, the PL spectra of FB-Por 1 and 2 exhibit a strong band at 653 nm and a weak peak at 715 nm. Zn-Por 1 and 2 show a very intense band at 420 nm for B-band π∽π* transitions. In addition, the weak bands at 547 and 585 nm were assigned to the Q bands. With an excitation wavelength of 430 nm, the PL spectra of Zn-Por 1 and 2 show a moderate band at 596 nm and a strong band at 646 nm.","PeriodicalId":18940,"journal":{"name":"Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology. The linear absorption maximum of the TP-Flu-TP was observed at 410 nm. The dispersion of the TPA intensity for the chromophore was measured by nonlinear transmission using 7 ns laser pulse. Since the maximum wavelength of this molecule occurred at 740 nm, we fixed the pumping wavelength at 740 nm for TP-Flu-TP and measured the transmitted pulse energy versus the input pulse energy. From this experiment we observed a distinct nonlinearity from TP-Flu-TP demonstrating that it is a potential material for optical limiting. The calculated two-photon absorption cross section (Δ) by the Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian with single configuration interaction formalism was 1.37 × 10−47 cm4 sec/photon.","PeriodicalId":18940,"journal":{"name":"Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) revealed that TTF-CH2SH monolayer is formed on Au (111) only at proper concentration. The presence of etch pits which is characteristic to chemisorbed SAMs was confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). From those SPR and STM results, it has been suggested that the molecular long axis of TTF-CH2SH was aligned nearly perpendicular to the substrate. In addition, cyclic voltammogram (CV) result indicates that TTF-thiolate SAMs on gold electrode are stable in repeated scans.","PeriodicalId":18940,"journal":{"name":"Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology. The optical image of the monolayer was monitored by Brewster angle microscopy. When the monolayer was spread on alkaline subphase (pH 11), the surface pressure spontaneously increased up to 15 mN/m. The λmax around 550 nm of UV-Vis absorption spectra of Ru(dps)Cl3 in chloroform was shifted to around 670 nm in the LB film. The patterning processes were monitored by the diffraction of the probe beam. The observed diffraction signals consist of the transient grating component due to the temperature change and the permanent grating component due to a chemical reaction. It was found that the microscopic pattern was destroyed with prolonged laser radiation. In an optical control regime, the grating effect can be controlled by alternate polarization switchings of one pump beam due to strong polarization sensitivity of azobenzene chromophores. The resulting polymers have been characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The weight average molecular weight (M w ) of polymers were in the range of 13,000–30,700 and thermal decomposition initiated in the range of 350-370°C. Good quality films were obtained by spin-coating onto indium tin oxide (ITO) glass plate and some of polymers exhibited smectic and nematic liquid crystalline phase at elevated temperatures. These polymers showed promising photochromic and thermochromic activities for optical recording materials.","PeriodicalId":18940,"journal":{"name":"Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Science and Technology.
