The high computational effort of the exhaustive search of the transform parameters can be substantially reduced by taking advantage of the statistical properties of the discrete cosine transform. The selection of the important transform coefficients, from a visual point of view, provides a reduction of the dimensionality of the transform space that can be employed as a feature selection to design a vector quantizer. The encoder proposed provides a substantial reduction of the execution time of the algorithm, without a noticeable loss of quality.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125346846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simultaneous image collections from two antenna systems or two-pass single antenna collections are processed as interferometric pairs to extract corresponding pixel by pixel phase differences which encode terrain elevation height. The phase differences are wrapped values which must be unwrapped and scaled to yield terrain height. We propose two major classes of techniques that hold promise for robust multibaseline (multiple pair) interferometric SAR terrain elevation mapping. The first builds on the capability of a recently published method for robust weighted and unweighted least-squares phase unwrapping, while the second attacks the problem directly in a maximum likelihood (ML) formulation. We will provide several examples (actual and simulated SAR imagery) that illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of each method.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"18 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121313193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For laboratory experiments a simulator can be used, based on the common Gaussian wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (GWSSUS)-model of the channel. So far its parameters have been determined for particular scenarios using theoretical considerations. A method is presented for the estimation of these parameters, using a sequence of measured impulse responses.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116653277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A linear operator is formed which selects components lying in a strip situated at an arbitrary angle in time-frequency. Whereas other methods approximate time-varying filters corresponding to different masks in time-frequency, the present method is restricted to strips, but there is no approximation involved. This strip filter is implemented in two ways, using Hermite functions and by chirp modulation, and is tested on a synthetic data signal.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"299 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130256225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two-channel systems enjoy many desirable properties. The present paper makes an attempt to generalize the previous results to the M-channel case while preserving the desired properties. The proposed M-channel filter banks have the advantage of low computational complexity. The perfect reconstruction (PR) property is structurally guaranteed, and therefore PR is preserved even when all the parameters are quantized to a finite precision. The new design method allows to design one filter at a time sequentially which is more efficient than designing all M filters simultaneously. Therefore one can control the characteristic of every subband filter separately. These filter banks may find applications where different properties of different subbands are desired.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134025305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A common assumption in the analysis of VQ systems is that the compressed digital information is transmitted through a perfect channel. Under this assumption, quantizing distortion is the only factor affecting output signal fidelity. However, in physical channels, errors may be present, degrading overall system performance. In order to reduce performance degradation, previous authors suggested to optimally redesign the VQ for noisy channels (\"noisy\" VQ). The \"noisy\" VQ results in smaller distortion as compared to the original (\"noiseless\") VQ for the specific channel it was designed for. The main drawback of this approach is the need to design and store, both in the transmitter and the receiver, several codebooks for different bit error rates (BER). We show that a simple gain adaptation, which depends on the channel BER, also improves system performance, while using the original (\"noiseless\") VQ design. The improvement in some cases, as shown by numerical examples, is close to what can be achieved by the optimal approach.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":189083,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE 6th Digital Signal Processing Workshop","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117285030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
