One of the most important safety considerations is the integrity of the RPV (Reactor Pressure Vessels). The RPV material suffers several ageing-related effects during operating service: neutron (and gamma) irradiation embrittlement, thermal ageing, low-cycle fatigue, thermal fatigue and corrosion. Generally, the most severe effects are irradiation and the thermal embrittlement of the RPV belt near the fuel core zone, which is often referred to as the beltline. Nearly all operating RPVs are covered inside with a stainless steel layer called RPV cladding. The RPV cladding generally made by welding results in very rough grain size and its mechanical and thermal properties are different from the RPV base material, causing high residual stresses. The thickness of RPV cladding is 2?10 mm. Since the RPV cladding was previously considered only as an anticorrosive layer the mechanical properties and the role in the RPV integrity were not properly studied. In this review, the existing relevant informations on RPV cladding properties are summarised.","PeriodicalId":188437,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127311170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New tools for supporting NKM were initiated by international organisations, including a web-based knowledge portal, ODIN, developed by the JRC of the European Commission. This portal is dedicated to knowledge preservation and consolidation and includes a nuclear database where papers on WWERs are collected and electronically stored. A collection of around 100 papers selected from the ODIN database on property?property correlations for irradiated reactor pressure vessel steels has been reviewed in order to have a clear picture of the advances achieved so far in this field, and to determine existing gaps and open issues. It allows identifying research activities needed, as described in this paper. The review performed focuses on two main areas, namely non-destructive examination of the embrittlement condition and fracture and Charpy toughness determination, including specimens size and constrain issues.","PeriodicalId":188437,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management","volume":"130 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124282599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the development of the fine scale radiation-induced defects which impede the dislocation motion under the applied stress, known as the irradiation embrittlement, leads to mechanical properties degradation which can results to the partial loss of plasticity and to the increase of brittle fracture. Defects are formed from vacancies and interstitials created in collision cascaded processes. With the aim to reveal processes connected to WWER pressure vessel steel degradation, the importance of experimental microstructural studies was accented in many comprehensive works during the last 40 years. Many of these investigations resulted in valuable findings used worldwide. This paper is focused on the survey of knowledge extracted from relevant papers in area WWER steel microstructure selected by group of experts in frame of EC framework projects 'Nuclear Knowledge Preservation & Consolidation' coordinated by JRC Petten.","PeriodicalId":188437,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131376614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, new collaboration initiatives were set up, amongst which the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) and the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNE-TP), who have recognised the need for preserving, consolidating and disseminating nuclear knowledge, in order to make it easily accessible to future generations. The IE has developed a method for consolidation of nuclear knowledge. The method relies on the mobilisation of all identified leading experts in the EU in re-evaluating old knowledge and consolidating what is necessary to create training materials for the new generations. This method was applied for a pilot study for consolidating and preserving WWER RPV safety-related knowledge. This paper is focused on a description of the methodology, the experience gained and lessons learnt from the pilot exercise.","PeriodicalId":188437,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131245993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Copper and phosphorus are the main influencing elements for WWER-440 RPVs. The influence of copper is implemented in the forming of nanocluster centres rounded by other elements which are the effective barriers to dislocation movements. Phosphorus segregates inside the grains, interacting with matrix defects and attracted to the Cu-type precipitates. Phosphorus also migrates to grain boundaries through diffusion processes. Due to the higher nickel content and very low copper and phosphorus present in WWER-1000 RPV steel, the main influencing element for this RPV type is nickel. The manganese content also has to be taken into account due to synergism of Ni and Mn. The semi-mechanistic model is based on key embrittlement mechanisms of chemical elements influence: matrix damage, irradiation-induced precipitation and element segregation proposed.","PeriodicalId":188437,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132190826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Austria has no nuclear power plant in operation because of the legislation prohibiting nuclear power production within its boundaries. Therefore, its nuclear education focuses on safety issues, i.e. environmental, health and engineering. This paper presents the increasing trend of students in nuclear subjects since 1995. The atomic institute is playing an active role in NKM through the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) association.
