An implant-retained auricular prosthesis is a suitable alternative. Microtia, malformation, deformity, and partial or complete loss of the external ear may be due to various congenital or acquired factors. A case series of three patients treated with implant-retained auricular prostheses is presented in this article. For each missing pinna, two titanium implants were placed in the temporal bone. After 6 months of osseointegration, the implants were loaded. All three cases were rehabilitated with a bar and clip retained prosthesis. There were two male and one female patient with an average age of 16.6 years. One patient had unilateral absence of external ear and two had bilateral absence. A total of 10 implants were placed, 4 on the right side and 6 on the left. The average post rehabilitation follow-up was 18 months. Peri-implant tissue reactions were observed at two sites. The implant-retained auricular prosthesis is an alternative treatment approach with good retention and patient satisfaction. Long-term follow-up is required to assess delayed sequelae.","PeriodicalId":18827,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135611161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Method: 40 implants were placed out of which 20 were tapered and rest were cylindrical. These were further divided into immediate and delayed settings. The patients were followed upto 6 months and the results were compiled. Result: Statistically significant difference were found between tapered and cylindrical implants in terms of quality of osseointegration and maintenance of crestal bone height. Conclusion: It has been gathered from the study that while delayed placement suggests waiting time period varying between 3 and 6 months, it offers a predictable procedure in terms of visibility, good implant-bone contact, and closure all of which, promote a better outcome for dental implant therapy. Immediate implant placement solution is very viable in reducing the time period involved in dental implant therapy. Apart from few to minimum contraindications, it can be predictably performed.","PeriodicalId":18827,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135611170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: Blood samples were taken preoperatively and post-operatively at day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 7 for measuring the levels of CRP and TLC. The trends of CRP and TLC were analysed against the Clinical Severity Scale (CSS). The study was carried out on patients of odontogenic space infection, and minimum of 50 patients were selected for this study. Comparative evaluation of C-reactive protein (CRP) versus total leucocyte count (TLC) was performed. Results: Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Inferential statistics were performed using Spearman Correlation . The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05. The result of the study demonstrates that the C-reactive protein (CRP) was found to be more consistent indicator for monitoring the patients of odontogenic space infection than TLC, Differential Leucocyte Count (DLC) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Conclusion: We conclude that CRP should be incorporated as monitoring tool, and it serves as a better indicator than TLC for managing patients with orofacial space infections of odontogenic origin.","PeriodicalId":18827,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135611178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Saliva is a strong proponent of a diagnostic and prognostic tool for TMDs. Hence, a systematic review was undertaken to answer the research question “What is the role of salivary biomarkers in the identification of TMD?” A thorough literature search was performed in databases of PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar till February 2022. Every included study was characterized by Study ID, location, sample size, demographic information, biomarker analysis, assessment method, and results. Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the methodological quality of all qualifying research. A total of eight articles were included for the review after screening the titles, abstracts, and full-text articles. The review included articles of observational design with a control group. TMD disorders were confirmed both clinically and radiographically in the study of Shoukri et al. TMDs are commonly prevalent in maxillofacial conditions. Despite the availability of various diagnostic techniques, certain limitations are remarkable. The researchers are yet to ascertain a gold standard biomarker to identify TMD.","PeriodicalId":18827,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135611470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-five to forty percent of mandibular fractures involve the condyle. In the literature, there exists no consensus “gold standard” treatment for mandibular condylar fractures, and there is a continuing debate on whether condylar fractures should undergo closed or open reduction. Materials and Method: Twenty patients who had undergone open reduction and closed reduction treatment were included in the study. Clinically maximal interincisal opening, laterotrusive and protrusive movements, pain on mouth opening, malocclusion, chin deviation on mouth opening, facial nerve palsy, hematoma, infected implant, and bite force were evaluated after a minimum of 3 months postoperatively. Also, a postoperative CT is done to evaluate the anatomical position of fragment. Results: On evaluation of clinical parameters, both groups had comparable results. However, none of the patients in open reduction group had deviation of mandible from midline on mouth opening. Also, better anatomical repositioning is obtained in open reduction group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the open reduction method is a better alternative to closed reduction in treatment of mandibular condylar fractures.","PeriodicalId":18827,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135611467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess regenerative potential of i-PRF and comparing it with PRF, along with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) in the treatment of intrabony alveolar defects. Materials and Method: Thirty defect sites in 15 patients with bilateral intrabony defects were assigned randomly into two groups (Group I (Control group)- DFDBA + PRF and Group II (Test group)-DFDBA + i-PRF). Gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), pocket probing depth (PPD), and relative attachment level (RAL) were recorded at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Linear bone growth (LBG) was recorded radiographically at baseline and 6 months. Statistical Analysis: ANOVA test and post hoc Tukey test were used to assess intragroup comparison of clinical parameters. Paired t-test was used to assess intragroup comparison of the radiographic parameter. Unpaired t-test was used to assess intergroup variations in all the clinical as well as radiographic parameters. Results: Statistically significant PPD reduction ( P = 0.005) and RAL gain ( P = 0.003) were found in Group II than in Group I, and no significant difference was found in other parameters. Percentage LBG was higher in Group II than Group I but the difference was not statistically significant.
