There are three components in MCDF; the mission-behavior-motion block diagram, the functionality-module relationship and the human participation level table. Through integration of the three components, a human driver can cooperate with the vehicle's intelligence to achieve better driving performance, robustness and safety. The MCDF is successfully implemented in TROCS, a real-time autonomous vehicle control system developed by the Tartan Racing Team for the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. The performance of MCDF is analyzed and a preliminary test in TROCS simulation mode shows that MCDF is effective in improving the driving performance.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"1005 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123105887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the following mode, the robot follows the target object such as the person who walks in front of robot, and runs until reaching his destination. To follow him, the region extraction method is applied. Furthermore, the robot records the running route. In the returning mode, the robot runs by tracing the recorded route. We developed the mobile robot based on the electronic wheelchair and carried out some experiments. As the result, we confirm that our robot runs both following and returning mode by satisfactory performance.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"20 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114106068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we aim to provide human robot developers with a straightforward toolkit to evaluate users' acceptance of assistive social robots they are designing or developing for elderly care environments. We will explain how we developed the measures for this analysis, provide do's and don'ts in designing the experiments, demonstrate the application of the measures we have developed for this purpose and the analysis and interpretation of the data. As such we hope to engage human robot interaction developers in evaluating the acceptability of their own robot to inform the development process and improve the final robot's design.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131359365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And, based on these functions, many researchers have tried to realize good applications for convenient human life. While, a mental safety and affinity for human are also important topics to co-existence with robots. The evaluation techniques of robot motion and design are necessary to consider the above things. However, the costs of real robot are very expensive. So, it is difficult to evaluate human impression for several real robot. So, to solve this problem, we have focused on the evaluation techniques by using virtual reality. In the previous work, several types robot design were evaluated on virtual reality by using meta model, which is abstraction model of robots. When researchers want their robot to reflect an evaluation result on virtual reality, there are some relationships between virtual robot and real one. If there is no relation from real robot and virtual one, we cannot do any feedback to real robots based on virtual one's results. In this paper, we evaluate the relationships between virtual robot and real one based on human impressions through several experiments.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128062147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional hierarchical searching, which invariably requires time even for those familiar with systems, is another factor. Our proposed user-adaptive interface consists of user modeling using a hidden Markov model (HMM) and symbol matching which is the reconfiguration of a preferred navigation sequence. The interface learns a user's navigation patterns based on accumulated navigation sequences. The navigation sequence is reconfigured by the user model and a clue. The symbol matching is performed in compliance with the user's selection and the navigation sequence is recommended to the user. Experimental results showed that reconfiguring the navigation sequence and switches reduced navigation reaction time.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131833251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the support based on information is one of important capabilities home robots should have, it has not been fully studied what are the merits of providing information via a robot compared with accessing information via PC or a mobile phone. In order to investigate the merit, two experiments are performed in this paper. The experimental result show a robot can effectively attract users when providing (recommending) information. It is also shown information provided by the prototype can promote the communication among users. The obtained result supports the significance of performing information support by home robots, and be used for designing home robots that provide information-based support.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124893810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the device, its user can draw a line on it as well as point icons like a mouse. During such operation, users can feel only smoothness on the top of the pen. They cannot recognize the completion of the operation, because of no tactile sensation feedback. In this research, tactile feedback through the pen is proposed. The operators can feel drawing sensation similar to the feeling when they draw a line with a charcoal on a drawing paper. To realize the feedback, principle of surface acoustic wave (SAW) tactile display was applied. A movable tablet with a SAW transducer was designed and fabricated. With the transducer, tactile feedback can be enjoyed on whole PC screen.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134115127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

‘The Japanese way of robotics’: Interacting ‘naturally’ with robots as a national character? “日本的机器人方式”:与机器人“自然地”互动?

In March 2008 the popular robot cat character “Doraemon” was even assigned “animation cultural ambassador” by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to promote Japanese culture worldwide. The general acceptance of robots as partners of human beings at the work place and at home is also a major argument of the Japanese government to strongly promote the use of “social” robots in-and outside the factories to overcome the problems of the aging society, especially the decreasing number of Japan's workforce population. In contrary to the western image of robots as frightening machines there seems to be a different concept and attitude in Japan. However, the discourse on the acceptance of robots in Japan lacks a differentiated view of the “classical” arguments for the popularity of robots. The paper will shed a new light on this discussion and explore the “negotiation character” of the creation and use of technological artifacts like robots in Japan. It also aims to initiate a discussion between the humanities and natural sciences about the influence of culture on the development of robot technology.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133295255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Control of robots, wheelchairs, and rehabilitation aids using the arms, hands or legs by EMG signals has been quite popular and effective. However, few works have dealt with head-movement control using neck EMG signals. We have built a model that estimates continuous human head movement from neck EMG signals. Our proposed model, which considered not only static but also dynamic effects, effectively suppressed the over/undershoot, and predicted head-rotation movements well. This result indicates that the proposed model has the potential to reconstruct the observed data from neck EMG signals properly.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132681278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
