Multimedia technologies are being utilized to enhance the support system to function as operational information support and interface between human operator and robot system. In the study, five experiments were carried out in both system hardware and support information developments to investigate the human factors design of the support system. In the information display approach study, comparison of information presentation ability among paper manual, LCD TV and projector was conducted. Similar information was displayed in different visual areas by vertical and horizontal LCD TV configurations to study the effect on human visual working area. The comparison experiment on image, text and voice formats had resulted varying modality effectiveness of information. Different information formats require different human cognitive processes even though the information contents are similar. The investigation on multimedia displays in five combinations of information elements was performed in multimedia display design study. The information support system is implemented in a human-robot collaborative prototype production cell. The cable harness assembly experiment had proven the effectiveness of the information support system in guiding the operators on the assembly operation and also to collaborate well with the robot system.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115430768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose coimagination method for prevention of dementia through supporting interactive communication with images. Coimagination method aims to activate three cognitive functions: episode memory, division of attention, and planning function, which decline at mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Participants of the coimagination program bring images according to the theme and communicate with them. The objective of the program is to make participants to focus on present and future rather than past, which is major difference between coimagination and reminiscence. We measure frequency of comments by others for each participant in order to evaluate interactivity of conversation. They take memory task whether they remember the owner or theme of images after the series of sessions. We held coimagination program successfully at the welfare institution for elderly people in Kashiwa city, Japan. Each session was held one hour per week for five times. The result of the task indicates that the participants showed empathy with each other. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated through the experiment.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115605580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the learning phase, data for motion such as waving of the hands, standing on a leg, performing sit-ups and squats is captured from a human strapped with the Orient motion capture specks. Key features are extracted from the captured motion data using unsupervised learning algorithms. During subsequent interactions with the robot, the motion of the operator, speckled with Orients, is classified and the robot selects to play the closest motion. This approach is particularly useful in situations where the robot operates a well defined vocabulary of motion, and the advantages are the real-time interaction and the rapidity (in a matter of minutes) in programming new behaviour compared to a heuristics-based approach. This paper compares the performances of three unsupervised learning algorithms: c-means, k-means and Expectation Maximisation (EM) for the four motion scenarios. Nine best candidates for the three learning algorithms for each of the four motion scenarios were selected in the Webots robot simulator and then transferred to the real robot. Metrics were defined for each motion scenario and their performances compared for the three learning algorithms. In all the cases the motions were able to be imitated; c-means was the best, followed closely by the k-means algorithms, and the reasons have been analysed.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"37 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123111475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ET rescue robot comprises the 2 systems, i.e., robot control and victim discovering systems, which interact with the operator via a remote computer. The robot control is performed by a remote computer that interconnects to the robot via a Bluetooth. Furthermore, during the first year of a child's life, the mother is playing a central role in shaping the development, through the attachment bond she shares with her child. Based on previous work on our model of arousal modulation for an autonomous robot, we present an experiment where human adults were interacting visually and via tactile contact with a SONY Aibo robot exploring a children playmat. The robots had two different attachment profiles: one recquiring less attention then the other. The subjects answered one questionnaire per robot, describing how they would rate their experience with each robot. The analysis of the subjects' responses allow us to conclude that this setting was sufficient to elicit positive and active caretaking-like behaviours from the subjects, according to the profile of the robot they interacted with.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124779797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework consists of two processes, imitation learning of human arm motions and real-time generating of a human-like arm motion using the motion database evolved in the learning process. The imitation learning builds the database for the humanoid robot that is initially converted from human motion capture data and then evolved using a genetic operator based on a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in an evolutionary algorithm. This evolution process also considers the minimizing of joint torques in the robot. The database is then used to generate humanoid robot's arm motions in real-time, which look like human's and require minimal torques. The framework is examined for humanoid robot to reach its arms for catching a ball. Additionally, the inverse kinematics problem to determine the final posture of 6-DOF robot arm with a waist for the task of catching a ball, is proposed.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128594473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
