For this purpose; in this paper, we are presenting our approach to introduce first year undergraduate students of the Department of Modern Mechanical Engineering the basics of robotics systems. In particular, the details of curricula of the Mechatronics Laboratory (1) and (2) are explained. In both lessons, the students receive lectures of the content of each proposed topic and then, a set of practical experiments are done. On the other hand, in order to foster the creativity of undergraduate students of engineering fields, we focused in developing an education tool designed to introduce at different educational levels the principle of developing mechatronic systems. In particular, the development of an inverted pendulum mobile robot Waseda Wheeled Vehicle No. 2R (WV-2R) has been proposed. Regarding the Mechatronics Laboratory, questionnaires were proposed to obtain information from the students about their impressions of the lessons. From the comments collected from the questionnaires, we observed the advantages of the proposed curricula to introduce them about robot technology. On the other hand, different kinds of experiments were proposed to confirm the possibility of implementing controllers as well as changing physical properties of the system to observe differences on the response of the system.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"77 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120966004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tactile softness was estimated at a remote site, which was then reproduced at a master site, by focusing on change of contact width between a fingertip and an object. To realize the tele-presentation system, a new contact width sensor was developed based on an optical principle. The sensor was designed to have a soft structure to resemble human fingers. The prototype sensor was evaluated for five different samples. The result showed that the sensor could discriminate five samples from the contact width variation, although one pair of samples showed only a slight difference. The tele-presentation system that integrates the developed contact width sensor and a newly designed softness display was developed and evaluated. The evaluation result showed that a user can discriminate softness of a remote object using this system, although the perceived softness feelings did not perfectly match the real feelings of the remote objects, which would be due to insufficient optimization of the contact width sensor. This would be improved by improving the sensor to have a similar dimensions and stiffness as real human fingers, which will be addressed in our future work.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115496445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We look into how emotionally expressive visual feedback from the robot can enrich the interaction process and provide the participant with additional information regarding the interaction, allowing the user to better understand the intentions of the robot. We discuss some of the interactions that are possible with ERWIN and how this can effect the response of the system. We show experimental scenarios where the interaction processes influences the emotional expressions and how the participants interpret this. We draw our conclusions from the feedback from experiments, showing that indeed emotional expression can have an influence on the social interaction between a robot and human.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"261 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123104101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The test circuit was fabricated on the breadboard by using discrete metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistors. The simulation results and the measured results of the test circuit showed that the motion detection circuit can output the motion signal. The test circuit was connected with the microcomputer introduced in the mobile robot, and the motion signal was input to the microcomputer. It was clarified from the measured results that the motion detection circuit can control the mobile robot.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116863436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, improving the adjustability of parameters' values in the model is essential for the designer of a robot. In this paper we developed a hybrid emotion generation architecture and defined the generalized context inputs of emotion generation model for convenient use by a robot designer. We also developed the personality model based on the Big-Five personality factors to generate the various emotions and action colorings. The personality model affected not only the intensity of the generated emotion, mood state, and emotion decay, but also the action selection of the robot. So, for each circumstance, the robot can show the distinct emotional state and modified actions, which we call action colorings. The developed emotion generation system is integrated into a robot which responds to the user's calling, and manages the schedule of the human.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116919827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

TAIZO can be controlled through both vocal commands and key input. Being roughly humanoid in shape it can demonstrate physical exercises in collaboration with the human demonstrator. Through the experiment, we measure both the usability of keypad and vocal commands, and also their demonstrative effects. Through real demonstration, we confirmed that the robot is effective in drawing in onlookers and encourage them to engage in health exercises.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123587261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, this awareness is difficult to compile in a educational book, and is seldom communicated in verbally. To show broad utility of system awareness, we need to show operator's conceptual structure of system operating. We firstly carry out operation analysis of graph drawing task using a spreadsheet software. Based on it, we propose a logical representation of operator's system awareness using Formal Concept Analysis. Using this framework, we analyze the correspondence relations of difference of using functions for each operator and implication from formal concept. As a result, this representation shows the operators' implicit rules which become the selection criteria of system functions.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116001990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is done by presenting an interaction model based on four ways that interactive artefacts may work as resources for human action. In contrast to data-centric models, this model includes socially and contextually oriented actions performed around the artefact, as well as actions related to the computational system running on the machine. A goal with the framework is to provide a concrete reference for designers, focusing on the experiential dimensions of the products that they develop.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128595873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the standard ASM, local appearances are described by intensity profiles, and the model parameter estimation is based on the assumption that the profiles follow a Gaussian distribution. It suffers from variations of poses, illumination and expressions. In this paper, an improved ASM framework, GentleBoost based SIFT-ASM is proposed. Local appearances of landmarks are originally represented by SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) descriptors, which are gradient orientation histograms based representations of image neighborhood. They can provide more robust and accurate guidance for search than grey-level profiles. Moreover, GentleBoost classifiers are applied to model and search the SIFT features instead of the unnecessary assumption of Gaussian distribution. Experimental results show that SIFT-ASM significantly outperforms the original ASM in aligning and localizing facial features.","PeriodicalId":187657,"journal":{"name":"RO-MAN 2009 - The 18th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128634203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
