However, the time-consuming task of reviewing the endoscopic data is a burden for the physicians. This limitation was the motive to propose a novel strategy for automatic discrimination of WCE images related to ulcer, the most common finding of digestive tract. Towards this direction, WCE data are processed with Bidimensional Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition to reveal their inherent structural components, and also to reconstruct a new refined image. Then, texture information is extracted by analyzing the intrinsic second/higher-order correlation of the original image and by calculating the lacunarity index of the refined image. Experimental results demonstrated promising classification accuracy (97%) exhibiting high potential towards a complete computer-aided diagnosis system.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133538033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urinalysis is the current application for these techniques. Our mobile application captures images of the color pads on strips using the camera phone, then analyzes automatically the images within the device itself and compares these against reference color pads to obtain a final classification. As a test scenario we focus on the detection of proteinuria, i.e., leakage of protein into the urine, for the detection of which strips for protein and creatinine are used. We performed an initial laboratory evaluation using specially prepared concentrations to check the accuracy and precision of detection. The results obtained are encouraging and show that the proposed technique has a good potential for the development of cheap, mobile and smart home-based readers for the early detection of health problems.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"143 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131822784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our aim is to assess the usage of these methods on representative large datasets, also keeping into account relevant features related to modern application requirements. This work wants to be a useful reference for those interested in medical image coding technologies evaluation and, more in general, in the interdisciplinary debate about the usage of irreversible compression technologies for an improved and cost effective handling of diagnostic imaging processes and infrastructures (PACS, teleradiology) involving large datasets. Reproducibility and possible extension of this study are guaranteed by the use of publicly available reference software and datasets.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133380381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We combine the bag-of-visual-words based on the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) to represent regions of interest (ROIs) in lung CT images. Then the Max-Min posterior Pseudo-probabilities (MMP) learning method is applied to recognize the category of the imaging sign contained in each ROI. We conducted the 5-fold cross validation experiments on a set of 696 ROIs captured from real lung CT images. The proposed approach achieved the average sensitivity of 91.8%, the average specificity of 98.5% and the average accuracy of 98%. Furthermore, the HOG-LBP features surpassed individual HOG or LBP as well as the hybrid of LBP and intensity histograms, and the MMP behaved better than the Support Vector Machines (SVMs). These experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125267404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We take a knowledge management approach whereby we represent CP as a CP ontology. To represent a CP as a process workflow we have developed a high-level semantic mapping between the CP ontology and the BPMN ontology. The ontology mapping allows the alignment of semantic relations between two ontologies and thus ensures that a clinical process defined in the CP ontology is mapped to a standard BPMN workflow element.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134496664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This deficiency hinders the daily life of African professionals that often cannot afford, for instance, the cost of internet fees or software licenses. The AFRICA BUILD project, funded by the European Commission and formed by four European and four African institutions, intends to provide advanced computational tools to African institutions in order to solve current technological limitations. In the context of AFRICA BUILD we have carried out, a series of experiments to test the feasibility of using Cloud Computing technologies in two different locations in Africa: Egypt and Burundi. The project aims to create a virtual platform to provide access to a wide range of biomedical informatics and learning resources to professionals and researchers in Africa.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"147 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134490645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building effective and agile systems for managing these collections has become an important and expensive issue for hospitals and institutions. In this paper we present a cloud computing service and its application for the storage and analysis of large image collections, specifically for very-large images. This Cloud Computing Service allows users to manage image collections in a relatively low-cost manner. The service is internally implemented by a balanced multiagent system. A novel aspect of the system is that one image could be divided in several, and those can then be stored and managed separately. This feature improves performance in data processing and information retrieval.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"9 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132285475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, classifying a huge number of cells or quantifying markers from large sets of images by experts is a very time-consuming and poorly reproducible task. In order to overcome such limitations, we propose a supervised method for automatic cell classification. Our approach consists of two steps: the first one is an indexing stage based on specific bio-inspired features relying on the distribution of contrast information on segmented cells. The second one is a supervised learning stage that selects the prototypical samples best representing the cell categories. These prototypes are used in a leveraged k-NN framework to predict the class of unlabeled cells. In this paper we have tested our new learning algorithm on cellular images acquired for the analysis of pathologies. In order to evaluate the automatic classification performances, we tested our algorithm on the HEp2 Cells dataset of (Foggia et al, CBMS 2010). Results are very promising, showing classification precision larger than 96% on average, thus suggesting our method as a valuable decision-support tool in such cellular imaging applications.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"325 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116785632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To not render the data useless for further analysis it is often important to find an optimal solution to the k-anonymity problem, i.e., a transformation with minimum information loss. As performance is often a key requirement this paper describes an efficient implementation of a k-anonymization algorithm which is especially suitable for biomedical datasets. Although our basic implementation already offers excellent performance we present several further optimizations and show that these yield an additional speedup of up to a factor offive even for large datasets.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128675832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
