This paper focuses on improvement in general health status of elderly patients through the use of an innovative service which align dietary intake with activity information. Personalized healthcare services based on the patient's activities of daily living and their shared experience, are provided as outputs. A knowledge driven approach has been used where all the daily life activities, social interactions, and profile information are modeled in an ontology. The semantic context is exploited that enables fine-grained situation analysis for recommendation of personalized services and decision support. Preliminary experimental results for the dynamic nature of the systems and its corresponding personalized recommendations have been found to be encouraging.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116998676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach is to represent institution-specific Clinical Pathways (CP) using an ontological model and then align the common care activities between multiple CP, based on their semantic descriptions, to generate a `maximally standardized' care model that merges common care activities whilst allowing to administer unique institution-specific care activities. Our semantic web based approach is used to develop a standardized prostate cancer care model for three Canadian institutions, such that the standardized model can be executed via a web-based system to streamline patient care.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116466929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of a virtual laboratory is to support collaborative work of all the people who are involved in any stage of the experimental process. Problem Solving Environment (PSE) is an approach and a technology that is used for the definition and composition of complex applications, hiding programming and configuration details to the user that can concentrate instead only on the specific biological problem. PSE allows building virtual laboratories specialized for a specific domain, such as bioinformatics. At the University of Salento, we have developed ProGenGrid (Proteomics and Genomics Grid), a system which aims to provide a virtual laboratory where e-scientists can simulate biological experiments, composing existing analysis and visualization tools, monitoring their execution, storing the intermediate and final output and finally, if needed, saving the model of the experiment for updating or reproducing it at a later time. Different bioinformatics services and workflows have been deployed in the LIBI (International Laboratory of BioInformatics) project, aiming at setting up an advanced bioinformatics and computational biology laboratory, focusing on basic and applied research in modern biology and biotechnologies. In this paper we present recent developments in the ProGenGrid system, with a special focus on the possibility to configure a computational grid by using the workflow editor. This new feature of the system allows to the user to create his/her own personal grid on-the-fly, by adding, removing, or updating its computer configuration.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121951070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose we select six previously developed methods which achieved promising results already in the past. We then evaluate the methods using the cross-validation protocols leave-one-image-out (LOO-CV), leave-one-parent-image-out (LOPIO-CV), leave-one-lesion-out (LOLO-CV), and leave-one-patient-out (LOPO-CV). We show that, in general, the more restrictive cross-validation protocols lead to high results drops. While in case of LOO-CV the accuracies are rather high across all methods evaluated, the picture changes the more strictness a cross-validation mode imposes on the set of training images.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125811310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current requirement for extensive user interaction with commercially available computerized stereology systems limits the throughput of data collection. To increase the efficiency of this process, an algorithm was developed to automate data collection from stained objects in thick, transparent tissue sections. We present a novel approach to extract, count and classify stained objects of interest in 3D by linking them through a z-stack of images. Skeletonization and erosion are used to further segment the under segmented (overlapping) cells resulting from the extraction of out of focus cells in conjunction with in focus cells. Finally, 3D shape features, computed from the re-linked cells, are used for final classification of counted objects into “cells” and “not-cells”. We achieve a classification accuracy of 85% using SVM in a leave one-out experiment. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm to count cells in 3D from thick, transparent tissue sections.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122381818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The benchmark procedure for ANAs diagnosis is the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay performed on the HEp-2 substrate. Medical doctors first determine the fluorescence intensity exhibited by HEp-2 cells, and then report the staining pattern for positive wells only. With reference to staining pattern recognition, in the literature we found works recognizing five main patterns characterized by well-defined cell edges. These approaches are based on cell segmentation, a task that should be harder than the classification itself. We present here a method extending the panel of detectable HEp-2 staining patterns, introducing the centromere and cytoplasmic patterns, which do not show well-defined cell edges, and where a segmentation-based classification may fail. We apply a local approach which extracts SIFT descriptors and then classifies an image through the bag of visual words approach. This permits to represent complex image contents without applying the segmentation procedure. We test our approach on a dataset of HEp-2 images with large variability in both fluorescence intensity and staining patterns. Despite the large skew of the a-priori class distribution, our system correctly recognizes the 98.3% of samples, with a F-measure equal to 92.3%, 95.2% and 99.0%, for each class.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126663030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most important advantages of those systems is to allow widespread sharing and remote access to medical data. Nevertheless, there is no simple solution for imaging data exchange between multiple places due to bureaucratic and technical issues. The paradigm introduced by Dicoogle project potentiates queries over a set of distributed repositories, which are logically indexed as a single federate unit. This paper describes a Cloud-based relay service that acts as a bridge of communications between the different institutions, allowing the community to access, share and discover imaging records.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121721458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the graph structure of the vessel network. The vascular network is represented based on the skeleton of the available segmented vessels and using an undirected graph. Significant points on the skeleton are considered nodes of the graph, while the edge of the graph is represented by the vessel segment linking two neighboring nodes. The graph is represented then in the form of a connectivity matrix, using a novel method for defining vertex connectivity. Dijkstra and Floyd-Warshall algorithms are applied for detection of minimal paths within the graph. The major contribution of this work is the accurate detection of significant points and the novel definition of vertex connectivity based on a new neighborhood system adopted. The qualitative performance of our method evaluated on the publicly available DRIVE database shows useful results for further purposes.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127566740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
