The anticipated outcomes are knowledge-based support applications for health care professionals and other actors in the dementia domain. The two major goals for the activity in focus are: (1) to accomplish international collaboration across organizational, language and professional boundaries in the modeling of knowledge and design of interaction, and (2) in a local community provide ICT-support for collaboration and communication between organizations, increase knowledge development in individual actors and increase the quality of dementia care. The semantic web-based prototype system ACKTUS is introduced as a tool for modeling and communicating knowledge and interaction, and its role in the process is evaluated. The activity is organized as a part of a collaborative work between different organizations to develop their local clinical practice. Obstacles and success factors when enabling the endusers to design their own tools are detected and discussed.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116078559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By mining specialized scientific literature, BioWizard not only generates biological hypotheses in the form of associations between genes, proteins and diseases, but also validates the plausibility of such associations against high-throughput biological data (microarrays) and annotated databases. The main novelties of the proposed approach are that: (1) it infers associations between biological entities by mining full text papers instead of only abstracts as usually performed by the existing tools, (2) a named entity recognition that improves the precision of the derived associations by enriching the vocabularies used in the mining loop with terms extracted directly from the text and, (3) the inferred associations are filtered according to their evidence in experimental data. We tested the precision and the recall of our system in retrieving known-associations (which did not appear in the same document) from gold standards and the results shown the ability of BioWizard in retrieving valid associations, thus providing a valuable tool for the use of biomedical researchers to speed up scientific progress.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116333741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To obtain robust and stable clusterings, consensus functions can be applied for clustering ensembles combining a multitude of independent initial clusterings. Direct applications of consensus functions to highly dimensional ECG data sets remain computationally expensive and impracticable. We introduce a multistage scheme including various procedures for dimensionality reduction, consensus clustering of randomized samples, followed by the use of a fast supervised classification algorithm. Applying the Hybrid Bipartite Graph Formulation combined with rank ordering and SMO we obtained an area under the receiver operating curve of 0.987. The performance of the classification algorithm at the final stage is crucial for the effectiveness of this technique. It can be regarded as an indication of the reliability, quality and stability of the combined consensus clustering.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114865582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A postprocessing step for the automatic detection offalse vessels is then necessary, mainly in bad quality or \"difficult\" images (e.g. because of lesions or hemorrhages). The proposed method considers the vessels as described by their centerline pixels and for each transversal section it classifies pixels as vessel or no-vessel using the fuzzy C-means technique. A vessel is classified as true if the distances between the edges and the centerline follow a monomodal gaussian distribution with a small standard deviation, i.e. if the they are parallel and symmetrical in respect to the centerline. Otherwise, if the distribution is monomodal but with a large standard deviation or bimodal, the vessel is recognized as false. The algorithm showed good performance both in the training and testing dataset, containing both good and bad quality images, with Auc of ROC curves always larger than 0.9.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115125357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this and develop effective treatments it is often the case that a wealth of clinical data is required for collection, analysis and feedback. Whilst such data often exists it is typically held in a variety of different formats and locations. This paper describes the EU FP7-funded Avert-IT project (www.avert-it.org), which has developed an integrated, realtime physiological data infrastructure (ICUnet) to address the specific issue of prediction of hypotensive events in the brain trauma domain. This system has been used to support a major multi-centre clinical trial. In this paper, the implementation and application of the ICUnet system is described, followed by the design and results of the clinical trial.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114984008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, a parameter setting of an algorithm determined for a database is not necessarily optimal on another one. To overcome this problem, we determine clusters of retinal images coming from different sources. In other words, we consider individual image characteristics instead of databases in a detection problem. We select 19 similarity measures to calculate image differences, and apply k-means clustering to obtain the clusters. For each cluster, an optimal parameter setting is determined for the same microaneurysm detector. We tested our approach on a publicly available database, where the performance of a state-of-the-art microaneurysm detector is successfully increased by the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123324605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, an accepted computerized system for their quantitative measurement is still missing. Vessel segmentation algorithms designed for adults' fundus images do not work well in infants' fundus images. In order to provide an accurate segmentation of the infant's retina vascularity we propose a supervised classification approach. The extracted feature set comprises multi-scales vesselness and texture features. Their combination allows the discrimination both between vessels and background, and between choroidal and retinal vessels. In order to reduce the computational complexity, the most useful subset of features to be fed to the classifier is determined employing a wrapper greedy forward-selection method. The performance of the proposed method is assessed by cross-validation on a dataset of 20 images acquired with a RetCam fundus camera. Average accuracy and Matthews' correlation coefficient are respectively 0.97 and 0.67 with respect to manual ground truth reference.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129386471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ACC may assign unique identifiers from standard terminologies. Previous ACC research focuses on mapping narrative phrases to terminological descriptions (e.g. concept descriptions). These methods make little or no use of the additional semantic information available through topology. We investigate a token based (non-phrase based) ACC approach that exploits additional semantic information available in SNOMED CT. Our method codes tokens as SNOMED CT concepts and manipulates concepts according to linguistic structures present in narrative text. It performed well (85.6%) in a recall test and performed significantly better than MetaMap in a precision test. MetaMap correctly coded 16% and our ACC method correctly coded 30%. This paper demonstrates the viability of non-phrase based ACC methods.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126451476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
