Regarding interoperability, current solutions for PHRsfocus on standard data exchange formats and transformations to move data across health information systems. In this paper we propose MyPHRMachines, a patient-centric system that takes a radically new architectural solution to health record interoperability. We propose to deploy besides the medical data also the related software to the PHR system. After uploading their medical data to MyPHRMachines, patients can access them again from remote virtual machines that contain the right software to visualize and analyze them without any conversion. Patients can share their remote virtual machine session with a selected health provider, who will need only a Web browser to access the pre-loaded fragments of the lifelong PHR. We illustrate how our prototype already supports the use case of a real-world patient and discuss the research agenda required to translate this prototype into a viable solution for the international healthcare industry.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127627563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MEWS is based on patient vital signs where these values are transformed into a MEWS score. An electronic Modified Early Warning Scorecard (eMEWS) prototype has been designed and developed to fulfill the role of a computerized Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) and to assist healthcare professionals in their decision making activities. A review of the existing electronic Early Warning Scorecards (eEWS) revealed they lack certain features that assist in capturing a holistic view of the patient health status for example color codes and vital sign trends. The proposed eMEWS prototype employs these features with the aim of assisting healthcare professionals to obtain a clear understanding of the patient status. A survey was conducted to evaluate the impact of paper-based MEWS and eMEWS as part of the decision making process. The advantages and disadvantages of eMEWS over the paper-based MEWS are presented.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123672404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, we here present an innovative technology, enabling “3D Clouds”, i.e. Clouds able to host 3D applications and provide them “as a service”. Achieving this goal can be very useful in Biomedicine and Life Sciences, where 3D visualization and image analysis play a key role. End users are immediately empowered by taking full advantage of high-end graphics cards, fast I/O performance and large memory nodes hosted in \"Public or Private 3D Cloud\", rather than waiting for the next upgrade of the graphics workstations. Even if the technology supports a wide range of 3D applications, we here present a case study in molecular modeling field, considering crucial aspects of security and data management.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121833864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a sign of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - the main cause of blindness in the developed countries and a third main cause of blindness in the whole world. Number and area of drusen are used to grade AMD. However, calculating them manually is time consuming. Thus various methods have been used to detect drusen automatically or semi-automatically. In this paper we propose an alternative method to find the borders of the drusen.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121049641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper considers the findings from a recent case study which examined the role of information and information services in social care in England. It focuses on an analysis of assessment activity, and examines the tensions between the information needs of practice and those of the administrative processes within which it sits. The paper explores the opportunities and challenges that lie in developing systems that will support social care practice as well meeting administrative needs, and concludes that a better understanding of these issues will lead to more effective systems and better technologies of care.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127967512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of these systems like cardiovascular or central nervous systems are indeed complex and that is confirmed by both the structure of physiological modelling which is generally employed to explain various pathophysiological phenomena and by the richness of information detectable from the signals, in most of the times with strong linear and nonlinear interactions with other biological systems. In particular, this behaviour may be accordingly described by means of what was called MMMM-paradigm (i.e. multivariate, multiorgan, multimodal and multiscale). Such an approach to physiological studies emphasizes where the genesis of their complexity is potentially allocated and how it is possible to detect information from it, through a proper processing of the available data. It is believed that this paradigm will contribute to a more olistic vision of pathophysiology, by considering patient as a whole not simply as the sum of his/her constituent parts. Medical diagnosis a well as a modern concept of preventive medicine which has to take care also of healthy population could largely profit by this methodological and technological approach.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126398931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a method for the automated hippocampal segmentation, based on virtual ant colonies, is proposed. The algorithm used, the Channeler Ant Model (CAM), represents an effective way to segment 3D objects with a complex shape in a noisy background. The CAM was modified by inserting a shape knowledge that is crucial to face the hippocampus segmentation. The algorithm was trained and tested using a database of 56 T1 weighted MRI images with a known manual segmentation of the hippocampus volume. The results are comparable to other methods: an average Dice Index of 0.74 and 0.72 is obtained over the left and right hippocampi, respectively. The lack of a heavy training procedure, because all the model parameters are fixed, and the speed make this approach very effective.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126353874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to its irregular and obscured margin, variability in size, and occlusion within dense breast tissue, a mass is often difficult to detect. In this paper, a multilevel thresholding approach controlled by gradient and intensity is proposed, where an image is considered as a 3D topographic map with intensity as the third dimension. A multilevel high-to-low intensity thresholding approach is used for the detection of the focal region of a mass. After each step of thresholding, a region growing technique is applied on each focal region to detect potential sites of masses using gradient and intensity information. The performance of the proposed method is tested on 107 scanned-film images consisting of 52 images with masses and 55 normal images from the mini-MIAS database, and 158 digital radiography (DR) images containing 78 images with masses and 80 normal images from a local database. A sensitivity of 95% with 5.2 false positives (FPs)/image is obtained with the mini-MIAS images and a sensitivity of 98.8% with 2.1 FPs/image is obtained with the DR images.","PeriodicalId":187652,"journal":{"name":"2012 25th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133012813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to better exploit these data, temporal and spatial dimensions could be managed considering them as meta-data useful to retrieve classical data. In this paper, we propose to use a framework for spatio-temporal granularities with the aim to improve the querying of clinical spatio-temporal data. We show how granularities can be used to enrich a psychiatric case register.
