Four minis MI-SRR structure had been connected to the corner of the main Minkowski Island Fractal to improve the bandwidth of the antenna. This antenna radiates at the broadband range from 2.09 GHz to 3.64 GHz with a bandwidth of 1.55 GHz. The first resonant frequencies for this antenna are at 2.292 GHz with - 14.515 dB of return loss while the second resonant frequency is at 3.428 GHz with - 28.585 dB. Design A and Design B have compared its return loss, resonant frequency, gain and bandwidth performance with the previous Minkowski Island antenna. The simulation work in CST Microwave Studio simulation software also had been compared with the measured fractal microstrip antenna.","PeriodicalId":187090,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference (RFM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131374888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To design a narrowband filter, the unloaded Q-factor of the resonator must be increased if we are to maintain a fixed passband insertion loss. However the Q-factor is proportional to volume of a microwave resonator filter. Thus, a highly selective, narrowband, and low loss filter will require a significant physical volume. This paper presents a novel cavity design of a stepped-impedance dual-mode coaxial microwave filter based on TEM mode of propagation. A brief theory together with design procedures is shown. In contrast to conventional combline based single mode filter, the proposed filter will be proven to be able to exhibit two resonances per unit structure. Therefore, the number of the resonators required is reduced to half. The simulated result clearly shows two resonances in the passband for one physical structure, hence producing dual-mode response. This filter is a suitable candidate for compact base station where the small and compact size of filter is highly concerned.","PeriodicalId":187090,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference (RFM)","volume":"106 Pt B 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133708212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The designs of eight radiating patches are installed in between aluminum plates which are fixed by the edges of the other aluminum plate. This is to represent eight angles where the antenna will radiate. By using switches, the beam of the radiating energy can be adjusted to be directed to a specific area. This antenna is operational at 5.8 GHz which is Wi-Fi frequency. The antenna generated a gain of 4.07 dB while the directivity is 9.986 dBi. The fractal based slot structure of the proposed antenna is in the form of Peano fractal curve of the second iteration as being applied to the two sides of a rectangular slot. The proposed antenna is to be etched using a substrate with relative permittivity of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6 mm. The resulting antenna has overall dimensions of 36 mm × 45 mm which is suitable for mobile terminal applications. Modeling and performance evaluation of the proposed antenna have been carried out using the CST Microwave Studio. Simulation results shows that the proposed antenna offers dual -10 dB impedance bandwidths of more than 1.2 GHz and 1.4 GHz for the lower and the upper bands respectively with corresponding average gains of about 2.5 dBi and 4 dBi throughout these bands. The first resonant band, centered at 2.50 GHz, extends from 1.91 to 3.11 GHz. This band covers the 2.4 GHz WLAN band (2.4-2.483 GHz) and the 2.5 GHz mobile WiMAX operating band (2.5-2.7 GHz), while the second resonant band, centered at 5.20 GHz; extends from 4.51 to 5.91 GHz. This band covers the U-NII mid-band (5.47-5.725 GHz) and U-NII high-band (5.725-5.875 GHz). Besides the compact size, the antenna offers reasonable radiation characteristics with omnidirectional radiation patterns in the two bands.","PeriodicalId":187090,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference (RFM)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124014507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For wideband signals such as LTE-Advanced, time domain characterization of power amplifiers requires specialized and costly measurement equipments. This paper proposes an approach for characterizing the distortions of power amplifiers based on frequency domain metrics. Accordingly, power amplifiers' static as well as dynamic distortions are quantified using the adjacent channel leakage ratio and the spectrum asymmetry index, respectively. Both metrics are defined in the frequency domain and can be extracted from the measured spectrum at the amplifier's output. The proposed metrics were applied for the characterization of two Doherty power amplifiers prototypes. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach in comparing the strength of static distortions and memory effects of power amplifiers prototypes.","PeriodicalId":187090,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference (RFM)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127809299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considerable research exists on alternative materials and medical treatments but is limited in the area of detection and categorisation of embedded asbestos material. Accurate survey data is the first line of defence in reducing risks of potential exposure, however advances in technology do not appear to have been exploited with established manual and labour-intensive methods of detection and sample analysis remaining predominant. Six types of asbestos are regulated in the UK. This research investigates the potential application of microwave spectroscopy as an alternative method of analysis in detecting the unique characteristic properties of these minerals. Experimental research is undertaken to obtain empirical measurements of the microwave response signals of asbestos samples in the frequency range of 10 MHz to 15 GHz. Individual sample behaviour is measured in amplitude and frequency response leading to a successful proof of concept that microwave spectroscopy is a technology with the potential to be applied to the surveying functions of asbestos in the built environment pending further applied research.","PeriodicalId":187090,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference (RFM)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116958736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

RCA with slotted circular patch frequency selective surface (FSS) is used atop primary feed i.e., microstrip patch antenna at a height of ~λ/2. The proposed structure is simulated using FEM based HFSS and 3D-EM Solver CST Studio Suite. The slot type defect is introduced in the patch FSS to obtain dualband with orthogonal polarization. It is demonstrated how using a slot, linearly polarized RCA gets converted to orthogonally polarized antenna. A gain of upto 16dB (approx) can be achieved at the two bands with different polarization using this structure.
