These evolutions introduce new challenges in power transmission planning and have an impact on the choices of technology and the geographical location of interconnection projects. AC protection relays, including AC connections, filters and transformers 400/205/205 kV and DC protection relays are presented with a functional description of the entire protection system. Regarding DC part, the protections of AC/DC conversion system, DC Cables and Common Neutral system are reviewed. Black start capability consists in the ability of the HVDC system to restore back the power to an Alternating Current (AC) grid which experienced a black out without particular constraints on short-circuit power that should be ensured. Restoration process with VSC-HVDC presents some differences and new challenges with respect to traditional restoration strategies which have to be carefully investigated. An optimization criterion, based on the minimization of branch loading, is proposed as a valid alternative to other criteria widely used in the literature. To take into account the uncertainty given by the grid operating conditions, i.e. by load demand and generator dispatching, a double stage stochastic optimization is proposed. The validity of the proposed approach is demonstrated by different analysis performed on the IEEE39 test grid. Results show effectiveness of the method in improving grid security. In order to face the new challenges of renewable energy integration, Terna and EDF are going to refurbish and upgrade the existing link. Low short circuit power and inertia, as well as fast recovery after dc-line fault are some of the main issues to be overcome. A complete model of this HVDC BtB has been developed by the authors with ATP (Alternative Transients Program) for conducting power system electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. In relation to the work carried out, this paper presents the following issues: the main technical characteristics of the HVDC BtB, the Static Characteristic under normal and abnormal operating conditions and control loops associated, bridge converter and thyristor firing scheme modelling, power converter transformers modelling, temporary over/under voltage control, initialization of the back-to-back model, application and removal of balanced three-phase fault at both rectifier and inverter sides, single phase fault with successful auto-reclosure at Uruguay side. Given this particularity, the new interconnection required special operation features, which guaranteed an improvement in system security and a commercial transfer capacity increase from 1.400 to up to 2.800111This has enabled the French-Spanish interconnection to reach higher values of Available Transmission Capacity in some hours MW.
