One of the main issues concerning the HVDC systems is the effect of the transient overvoltages (TOV) which occur during fault conditions on the DC side of a HVDC link. In fact, even if power cables are tested in order to withstand overvoltages with standardized characteristics, the real TOV phenomena do not have standard features. In this paper, the analysis of the TOVs of a HVDC symmetrical monopolar configuration is carried out, by studying the TOV propagation along the cable line and by defining step by step the overvoltage trend for different fault sections. Moreover, by means of a probability study, the most stressed points along the cable are identified by taking into account all the possible fault positions, so to highlight which are the more critical positions of the cable system irrespective of the fault section.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129072701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent European Regulations ask for the design and implementation of proper restoration plans, considering all the generation, load capabilities and network characteristics. In the Italian power system, Sardinian network relies on several restoration paths. Indeed, the island is also connected to Italian peninsula through two HVDCs, SA.PE.I and SA.CO.I, the last of which is also a multi-terminal link connecting French island of Corsica. In light of this scenario, the paper firstly presents the outcomes of the preparatory investigations and later provides the results of five major restoration tests, performed between 2015 and 2017. Future trends in a context of continuous restoration plan update are also provided","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122794287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper firstly investigates the key techno-economic benefits, evaluated by the application of a OPF (Optimal Power Flow)-based market simulator for zonal analyses. Starting from the optimized power schedules and generation unit commitment, main focus is on the Sardinian system flexibility adequacy that is verified by means of the comparison between the power reserve margins availability and the operational security requirements. The results provide indexes of the effectiveness that the new infrastructure may have on the Sardinian system in a 2030 time horizon in line with the scenario assumptions of the Italian National Energy Strategy.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115183927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first part, an analytical study of the converter is reported, with emphasis on the capacitors voltage ripple in presence of different circulating currents. In particular, the effects of the second and fourth harmonic components in the circulating current are evaluated in a general working point and, in particular, in the more significant working points corresponding to the inverter, rectifier, inductive and capacitive operation modes. The second part is a simulated HVDC plant verification of the voltage capacitor ripple expression.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114482852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, they cannot provide inherently inertia and frequency support, without the adoption of appropriate control strategies. With the increase of renewable generation interfaced by power electronics and the gradual phaseout of conventional power plants, frequency stability management is becoming a great challenge, particularly in small size islanded and asynchronously interconnected power systems. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of controlling a HVDC to support frequency stability providing primary regulation in future scenarios. We present and discuss the opportunities provided by a HVDC, using an aggregate generation-load model, to the frequency regulation of the Sardinia island in Italy also in the light of the trilateral interconnection between Sardinia, Sicily and Italian Peninsula. Simulations show that the HVDC can assure the frequency stability of the Sardinian power system, if primary control strategies are deployed.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130720270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This limits the power transfer capacity between the Center North and Center South market zones and with the risk of overload in case of high renewable generation in Southern Italy. The year 2019 Network Development Plan foresaw the installation of a submarine High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line between the Fano (Center North) and Villanova (Center South) substations, in order to overcome environmental and social constrains and allow a full integration of Southern renewable sources. This paper presents an evaluation of the operating limits of a specific portion of the Adriatic 400 kV backbone, both in its current configuration and after the installation of the new HVDC link.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126120182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the bulk of the Energy resources needed to satisfy rising demands are not located near the load centers. For submarine and lengthy land cables, HVDC systems offer key advantages including higher capacity, reduced losses, no need for capacitive charging currents and better control over both load flow and reactive power transmission. A number of interconnections from mainland to islands and long undersea applications have been realized to allow different types of energy sources to connect together to boost security of supply. In EU, Projects of common interest (PCIs) were introduced as key infrastructure projects, especially cross-border projects, that link EU energy systems. Germany, with its central location in EU and increasing electricity demand, is expected to promote interconnections between neighboring countries, thereby supporting the growth of worldwide's HVDC cables market. In particular the German Transmission System Operators (GTSO), in the frame of the Energiewende, are now looking for the first set of cable manufacturers able to supply at least 3000km of 525 kVdc extruded cables systems CESI is deeply involved in this process with 4 cables lines under tests in the first third party worldwide laboratory in Mannheim, Germany. This paper highlights the experience gained during the first Long Duration Tests (PQT) performed in both lab and outdoor situations on 525kV DC cable systems.","PeriodicalId":186931,"journal":{"name":"2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123543825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
