However, the lack of instructor involvement and the diverse student population have raised the concern regarding its credibility, and there has been insufficient validity evidence to support the interpretation and refinement of current peer assessment approach. The present paper proposed a comprehensive framework to examine the validity evidence of peer assessment scores in MOOCs by analyzing the interplay among peer assessment ratings, instructor ratings, and various peer engagement behaviors in MOOCs. The study results can extend our understanding of peer assessment approach and inform its future usage and refinement in MOOCs.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121598462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Context understanding, or text comprehension, success is frequently correlated with the size of the learners' vocabulary and the amount to which the intended resources are lexically covered in terms of word families. In retrospect, the type of vocabulary they have or are taught matters more to these learners for efficient learning than the number of their vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the necessary vocabulary types for engineering text comprehension, as determined by the percentage of lexical coverage in terms of strategically selected word lists. The vocabulary threshold for engineering materials comprehension was set at 95% coverage, which is believed to be sufficient for students to comprehend the texts. The study adopts and analyses three-word lists, computing the lexical coverage in which it fits the needed vocabulary threshold for engineering texts comprehension. The sample used for the cross-reference analysis was the materials from the latest 2021 industrial electronics magazine articles, published by IEEE Xplore. The adopted word lists fulfill the vocabulary threshold with less than 5000-word families involved, as compared to higher reported vocabulary size or demand needed to understand engineering texts at 95% coverage. Hence, teachers of English for Engineering Purposes (EEP) should prepare pedagogically to meet students' vocabulary requirements in terms of vocabulary word lists. Students are expected to utilise the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) to learn the words from the suggested word lists.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124532613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to reduce novice's cognitive load, this research aimed to explore how teaching, employing the integration of variable and visualization would impact the performance of novices' learning outcomes in computer programming. The proposed experimental method provides visualization-first at both design and implement level, which was evaluated through a survey and comparison of performance from two group students. The contribution of this research is that we have successfully employed the debugger from the programming IDE for visualization of both variables and coding. Through the visualization-first method, students also learned debugging and testing at the early stage of programming, which contributes to build up fundamental skills for them towards further study.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125491364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key factors ensuring effective implementation of STEM education is the readiness and willingness of teachers. However, the literature review of this study finds that there is limited research on investigating in-service science teachers' intention to teach STEM and the potential factors influencing their intention, such as technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). This study adopted a quantitative approach to investigate 30 Hong Kong in-service science teachers by using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) on an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB) framework. The results showed that Hong Kong science in-service teachers have a positive behavioural intention towards STEM education and a high level of TP ACK. Both statistics had an average score higher than the mid-points. Teachers' intention and TPACK levels were found independent of the factors like gender, years of teaching and major subject taught. Furthermore, this study found that attitude and technological knowledge have strong influences on teachers' behavioural intention, while other factors, including subjective norms and perceived behavioural control, have little influence. Research with richer samples is recommended to give policymakers more information on that critical issue.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130957237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One key technique is to recognize students' handwritten assignments. This work will be focused on the task of recognizing handwritten chemical organic ring structure symbols which exhibit the characteristic of rotational symmetry. Due to the global parameter sharing mechanism and pooling operation, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have the power to learn translation-invariance features. However, the design of the standard CNN itself does not specifically consider the rotation invariance. In this paper, we explore different methods to improve the property of rotation invariance of CNN and apply them for semantic recognition of handwritten chemical organic ring structure symbols. The first one is a test-time augmentation method with voting strategy without modifications to the network architecture. For the second method, we add 2 new layers into the model to endow it with the property of rotation invariance. These 2 proposed methods are evaluated on a self-collected data set and achieve the recognition aecuracy of 98.75% and 93.125% respectively.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115912468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
