The proposed e-ITSS consists of three main modules of teaching material service (TMS), dynamic symbols pad service (dSPS), and assignment management service (AMS). A courseware generation tool is integrated into the TMS module, which can generate rough coursewares from inputs such as textbooks. The dSPS module, built on an intelligent data mining algorithm, provides dynamic solution-related symbols that are structured with a hierarchical layout to benefit symbol input. Moreover, an auto-grading tool is provided for automatic solution correction in the AMS module, which empowers the system's capacity of instant feedback of subjective problems to students, with hints and suggestions. In addition, conventional modules, such as knowledge diagnosis, exercise recommendations, are also available in the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115419397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that it is effective for STEM college students to learn complex networking protocols by reproducing classic networking experiments in our previous pedagogical telecommunication practices. In this paper, we design an online simulation lab platform by integrating productivity-proved open-source modules for learners to practise networking protocols without tedious system and simulator configurations. The front-end of this platform applies a VUE-based framework and the back-end deploys a docker-based architecture to support elastic on-demand capacity expansion for potentially a large number of learners. We conduct an evaluation study to evaluate the system performance of this ns-3 lab prototype. We instruments two typical labs. In simulating a point-to-point communication link, an off-the-shelf typical server can support hundreds of users for parallel compilation within 10 seconds in this illustrative tutorial lab. In simulating a medium-complex WiFi network, this typical server can support 30 users for parallel compilation within approximately 1200 seconds to finish this lab. Our measurement results demonstrate the performance effectiveness of our prototype design to develop a scalable but user-friendly lab platform to learn computer network protocols in a learning-bv-doina approach.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115653066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This preliminary study examines the brain functional connectivity pattern of a child with dyslexia during the reading process. EEG signals were recorded when the subject was involved in rapid automatized naming (RAN) tasks and the signals were then pre-processed to remove artifacts. Partial directed coherence (PDC) approach was used to examine the functional connectivity pattern when the subject was involved in different naming tasks and comparisons were made before, during, and after naming the stimuli presented in the tasks. Results showed activation in the occipital and temporal regions but not the inferior frontal region during the rapid naming task completion. Based on the insights from this study, a suitable intervention will be designed and implemented to cater to the children's needs in learning to read.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115818870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, children with ASD often suffer from language communication disorders, especially often make mistakes in the use of personal pronouns. Games that use virtual characters usually do not take into account these inherent shortcomings of dysfunction in children with ASD, so they are not very effective in improving the language communication skills of children with ASD. In this study, an intervention system based on serious games which were integrated with the real avatars was designed for children with ASD to train their use skills in personal pronouns. By watching videos of themselves undergoing intervention in the game scenes, they can directly see “themselves” participating in the game, avoiding their abnormal brain mirroring functions. We hope that this avatar-based intervention system can help children with ASD overcome the dysfunction of the mirror neuron system and improve their express skills of personal pronouns.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127505512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To solve these problems, the National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Chemistry in collaboration with NUS Information Technology has designed an online board game, ChemPOV, to improve student engagement and student-student interactions for freshmen organic chemistry students, which increases students' motivation. This game can be played by up to four players, and each player competes with one another to see who can complete their organic chemistry synthesis scheme first through strategic and tactical planning, as well as answering organic chemistry-related questions. Players can also compete with one another through the leader board upon completing their synthesis scheme.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124824645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased development of technology [2] and access to high-speed Internet at an affordable cost [3] have been major contributors in facilitating a larger audience to obtain an education. When a larger community of students are receiving education, considering mechanisms of early prediction of student performance is important to boost the success of high-performing students and provide extra assistance to low-performing students [4]. Trials have been carried out with the inclusion and exclusion of attributes such as gender of students and medium of instructions at university admission exams, to increase the prediction accuracy of the performance of students. Using up to semester three GPA, the three models: SVM, Naive Bayes, and Decision tree gave accuracies in the range of, 77.0%-80.5%, at predicting the students' overall performance. The marks of the university admission exam, the hometown of the student, and the medium of instructions of the admission exam have contributory roles towards the students' performance.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126114072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a solver to solve the solid geometric calculation problems in text. First, it extracts a group of geometric relations from the problem text as the outcome of problem understanding by adopting syntactic-semantic method. Then, it finds out that the given problem should calculate on which solid geometric subject so that it constructs the subject in 3D Cartesian coordinate system. Finally, it calculates the answer using coordinate system, and generates readable solution including the solution text and 3D diagram. The proposed solver is tested on a dataset including 140 solid geometric calculation problems. The test result shows that the solver proposed in this paper achieves an accuracy of 76.43%.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"290 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123271657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed algorithm is based two novel ideas. First, it bases on the newly built syntax-semantics method. This method is very effective because it significantly reduces the difficulty caused by the variety of semantics expressions. Second, it uses a vector computing method to enhance the syntax-semantics method. The proposed algorithm consists of four steps. It first encodes the problem text into a vector sequence. Second, it generates the matching candidates of the problem. Third, it computes matching scores between the vectorized models and the candidates. Finally, it decodes quantity relations and their positions in the original problem text. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the baseline algorithms on the benchmark datasets.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125532949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, code reading lacks a clear termination condition, so there are two problems: 1) learners tend to end learning with insufficient understanding and 2) it is difficult for learners to maintain their motivation for learning. As an alternative to code reading, herein we propose a method to read and fix code containing bugs. We created a system and recruited 40 subjects for the evaluation experiments. A group (fixing bugs to learn Tower of Hanoi) had significantly better test scores (p-value: 0.0332) compared to the other group (reading code to learn Sieve of Eratosthenes). However, when the two groups were combined and analyzed, no significant difference was found. Since a ceiling effect was observed from the confirmation questions of the Sieve of Eratosthenes and the overall score was higher for Group A, and there is a possibility of bias both between questions and between groups, more rigorous experiments should be conducted in the future.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115522858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But the literature review found that related research focused on the rural teachers is very limited. This study thus investigated 31 secondary teachers from a rural secondary school in Guangzhou, a south China city. Stages of Concern (SoC) theory, based on Concerns-based Adoption Model, was used to design the instruments of this study. A mixed approach of quantitative (SoC questionnaire) and qualitative research (teacher interview form based on SoC theory) was adopted. It was found that the teachers' SoC line chart showed the shape of the letter “n”, The highest SoC was Consequence (M=5.63) and the lowest was Refocusing (M=4.95). Findings of teachers' interviews showed that the teachers had the most negative attitude toward the first and fifth stages (i.e. Evaluation & Refocusing). For the remaining three stages, most teachers were willing to accept the educational innovation reform, such as STEM education, although they were not fully prepared and have a worried attitude. The difficulty in implementing STEM education in rural secondary schools was mainly due to a lack of high-quality design of STEM education instruction and enough professional development opportunities.","PeriodicalId":186195,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology & Education (TALE)","volume":"9 Suppl 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116845646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
