The reason for this is the use of technologies that do not scale well in terms of capacity versus coverage in low tele-density traffic areas. The advent of IP-based networking for voice and data services promises to provide cost-effective solution to the tele-density problem because it addresses the decentralisation of the access and switching levels of the network that are reportedly the most costly part of any national network. We propose a network topology to support Africa-wide VoIP networking by the interconnection of segmented area-wide networks. It is shown that using an IP-based access network and provisioning based on teletraffic area-wide network demarcations, we can achieve a network solution to support different services and address the needs of the different market segments in low-density traffic areas.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132866492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper allocates one two-port memory unit for each butterfly-processing unit. The two output words of the i/sup th/ memory module are connected permanently to the inputs of the i/sup th/ butterfly processor. The interconnection network used uses a limited number of two-way switches. This layout cancels completely the transposition operation required in all the existing implementations. The address generating system is very simple and results in conflict-free addressing. The proposed system reduces the total processing time and leaves the results in the different memory modules arranged in the natural order that saves another transposition operation normally used with existing systems.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114933905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proliferation of wireless data communication and the Internet in urban areas have changed how people and businesses communicate. This is not the case in rural areas of developing countries where 80% of the population is found. We propose a flexible network for Internet services using CDMA access, which has the potential to cover the longer ranges characteristic of rural areas. We study the performance of the RAKE receiver with parallel interference canceller (PIC) structure in mitigating multiple access interference in rural multipath channels.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133854911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The implementation of the receiver in software radio provides for flexibility and cost efficiency that can adapt to changing standards and new protocols, improved complexity and upgradability of these base stations/node B's. This paper discusses some of the critical design issues that should be considered when developing a software radio. These include the development of a fast digital demodulation scheme and certain aspects of PC board design that should be considered. Results of the simulation and implementation of the digital demodulation and phase approximation in both hardware and software will be presented for the prototype FM software radio being developed.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133970616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are controlled by a rotor inverter and DC-linked front-end converter while the stator is linked directly to the grid. If a DC-bus bar is available, a double feeding can occur about the inverter. This paper describes a doubly-fed full-controlled induction wind generator which offers a higher flexibility of stator side control to ensure minimal losses as well as optimal power utilisation. The special wind converter system has been investigated at a glance of installed off-shore MW-generators, where a DC-transmission is advantageous because of the avoided reactive power.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"27 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133426281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
