The method is based on the inversion of the measured reflection coefficient at the probe's input port. The work was done at 500 MHz using an HP8510C network analyzer and high quality calibration standards. For precise inversion the attenuation and phase constants of the coaxial line must be determined with high accuracy. To a good approximation the measured probe capacitance was found to increase linearly with length from the value for a flush probe. This allows the CW capacitance of a short probe, with length up to 1/10 the free-space wavelength, to be modeled using a simple two-term model. Bare and insulated probes, both shielded and unshielded, were studied.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126183308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result of the outcomes based requirement and the easy access to electronic information the style of teaching, in the final Electronics and Measurement Systems courses, has been changed to a \"workshop\" styled system design with the responsibility left to the students to obtain the content information. The industrial network a firm operates in influences its technological capability. Networks differ in dynamics because of the differences in actors and the nature of interfacing between them. A Technology Colony can be defined as a concentration of technological based activities in the later phases of product lifecycles, without the necessary supportive technological based activities in the earlier phases of the lifecycles. In industrial clusters where the majority of the firms exhibit this type of technological profile, the network dynamics are different. In such cases the building of technological capability needs to be planned according to these characteristics.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114289765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a fuzzy logic controlled DC servo drive without the need for mechanical speed sensors. Speed estimation is performed from measurements of the input current and voltage to the motor. The latter is driven by a current-regulated voltage source DC-DC converter capable of operating in all four quadrants of the torque-speed plane. The fuzzy controller uses the calculated rotor speed to produce the armature current command necessary for matching the reference speed profile. The proposed system is shown to track the dynamic input speed settings and to reject step load disturbances with largely reduced settling times and steady state errors.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128456761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique consists of identifying the noisy space medium where the cancellation needs to be effected using a coded interrogation technique, and subsequently cancelling the noise using a simple, yet robust prediction strategy. Software coding and implementation has been achieved, with a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of up to 16 dB. The time taken to achieve this performance is about 32 s, for a wideband noise over the range 50 to 200 Hz. Once the system has learned the noise characteristics of the medium, it offers good tracking characteristics in cancelling the noise thereafter.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122015933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

M. Goldratt and others. When applied to a portfolio of projects, the value that an organisation realises from successful delivery can be maximised. A new value metric is introduced that effectively accounts for the flow of money in different time periods. An approach to portfolio management that strives for maximising organisation performance, given limited organisational capacity, is also introduced. Critical Chain project scheduling and synchronising projects around the schedule of a heavily loaded (drum) resource are used as the methodology of finite capacity management that enables leveraging value with scarce resources. A new set of buffers is introduced to enable the integration of portfolio management and Critical Chain scheduling.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133812542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recommendation of contact persons is a method that fosters the build-up of acquaintanceship in order to support the exchange of information. The subject of the present paper is a new recommendation technique, which automatically and continuously detects contact persons within relevant topics and represents them anonymously. For the detection of contact persons, various indicators are drawn up, e.g. authorship for the source of textual information and addresses for contact information. The emphasis of the paper is on the description of the data processing concept using Latent Semantic Analysis as well as the effectiveness of that method for document classification.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114864353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
