Furthermore, by employing quadrature partial response (QPR) in an OFDM system, an even higher spectral efficiency can be obtained than with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) subcarrier modulation. Unfortunately, this is obtained at the cost of BER performance loss when compared to QPSK. However, this loss can be regained by using Viterbi decoding in the receiver. The paper presents a performance evaluation of an OFDM system employing Viterbi decoded QPR under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel conditions as an alternative to QPSK modulated OFDM.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121410303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Development of this technology demonstrator proved to be an expensive exercise due to the large costs involved in initial flight tests of the SAR system. Experimentation regarding SAR processing is also very expensive. A cheaper alternative was to develop a static rail with a moving trolley to simulate the aircraft flight path. This paper describes the design and implementation of such an X-band SAR system developed at the CSIR. Data processing for this system was done in collaboration with UCT. The system uses a novel stepped frequency technique for obtaining the high bandwidths required for high range resolution. Encouraging results of initial systems tests are reported.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114068020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Techniques for assessing the condition of these insulators are under investigation. Such techniques include imaging techniques that take either an infra-red image or an ultra-violet image of the insulator. Such images may indicate some changes to either the external (visible) components of the insulator or to the internal (non-visible) components that may impact the long-term integrity of the insulator. This paper discusses the results of an investigation into these two imaging techniques applied to non-ceramic insulators.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125147789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results are compared with those obtained under test conditions in a local corona cage. From these it is shown that the loss predictions from the cage excitation functions (for the relevant conductors and conductor surface gradients) agree tolerably with the losses measured in both wet and dry conditions on the two lines. The overall errors and uncertainties in the CVT, CT and wattmeter measurements are also assessed.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114298921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new memory addressing scheme is given. The proposed scheme considers the case of using two modules of two-port memory and allows the processing of the butterflies in the form of groups of two. The addressing assignment allows, without any conflict, simultaneous access to the data needed for the two butterflies and to write back the four outputs to the same places. The advantages of this memory-addressing scheme lie in the fact that it reduces the number of the cycles of butterfly calculations of FFT to half and it reduces the delay of address generation to minimum.","PeriodicalId":185871,"journal":{"name":"IEEE AFRICON. 6th Africon Conference in Africa,","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123026329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
