The complexity and frequency of occurrence of DDoS attacks are growing in parallel with rapid developments of the Internet and associated computer networks. A significant number of network security tools are available on the Internet to generate network attacks as well as to defend and analyze network attacks. Attackers can generate attack traffic similar to normal network traffic using sophisticated attacking tools. In such a situation, many defense solutions fail to identify DDoS attacks in real-time. DDoS attack traffic typically behaves differently from legitimate network traffic in terms of traffic features. Statistical properties of various features can be analyzed to distinguish the attack traffic from legitimate traffic. In this paper, we introduce a statistical measure called Feature Feature Score (FFSc) for multivariate data analysis to distinguish DDoS attack traffic from normal traffic. We extract three features of network traffic, viz., entropy of source IPs, variation of source IPs and packet rate to analyze the behavior of network traffic for attack detection. The method is validated using CAIDA DDoS 2007 and MIT DARPA datasets.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122091065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current outdoor techniques using GSM, GPS and Wi-Fi are very expensive and infeasible for indoor mapping. This document presents a unique method of real time indoor localization and mapping using digitally coded electromagnetic waves (ASK and FSK). Localization is acquired with respect to 2-D array (NxM) of transmitter modules in rows and columns (i.e. length and breadth of the indoor region). All the transmitters of row array are tuned at same frequency but each transmitter emits a unique 12 bit digital code. Same is the case with column transmitters. The geometrical wave model of these transmitters renders family of circles, where radius of each circle represents `Received Signal Strength Indicator' (RSSI) value corresponding to a particular transmitter. For locating the object in (NxM) grid, differential mechanism is used i.e. comparing RSSI values of all the adjacent transmitters of row and column respectively at the location of object. Indoor region of particular dimensions can be discretized into NxM grids. Object is installed with customized FPGA core, 2 RF demodulators (for row and column) and two PLL ICs for calculating RSSI values (in 4 bit resolution). For real time response, 2 parallel I2C buses are connected to FPGA core. Wireless control over RF transmitters is used to prevent unwanted RF radiation. Overall, real world is discretized into grids. Also detailed comparison is shown as to how this technique is better than triangulation method.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129176641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, CUBIC and Compound TCP are the default transport protocols in the Linux and Windows operating system, respectively. However, both CUBIC and Compound TCP are known to have performance issues. Packet pacing can significantly improve performance of TCP Reno in high-speed networks. To that end, we examine the performance of paced Reno with CUBIC, and Compound TCP over a single bottleneck link with Drop-Tail buffers. Using extensive simulations, we show that in a many flows regime, with or without selective acknowledgements (SACK) support, paced Reno performs at the most, or better than CUBIC and Compound TCP. We also show that, with large Drop-Tail buffers, flow synchronization effects give rise to non-linear oscillations in the queue size dynamics, leading to low link utilization, aggregate throughput and fairness. On the contrary, small buffers ensure stable queues, and help paced Reno to achieve better network performance. With such incentives, paced Reno can possibly replace CUBIC in the Linux OS.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134515557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The size of the communication devices decreased by its increase in portability. Microstrip and printed antennas are promising candidates for this design due to their low profile, low-weight, and ease of fabrication. In this paper, a compact high gain bent dipole antenna is designed for GPS application at 1.575 GHz. This involves design and development of bent dipole antenna on FR4-Epoxy substrate with dielectric constant of 4.3 and thickness 1.52mm. It is then developed for two elements and six elements array antenna. The antenna is designed to improve the gain, reduce the design complexity and size of array antennas. The designed antenna is simulated using Empire 3D FDTD based simulation tool. The return loss of the single element, two and six elements bent dipole antennas are -31.17dB, -20dB and -17dB respectively. The gains are 2dB, 4.59dB and 8.01dB for single element, two elements and six elements bent dipole antenna. Hence, the antenna array structure increases the gain. The antenna is the fabricated and tested to confirm the simulated results.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127428522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detecting congestion and communicating it in a timely manner may enable a number of mitigation strategies such as re-directing traffic as well as individuals adopting alternate routes or transportation methods. We seek to crowd-source road congestion information detected on individual user's smart phones as a low-cost approach for such detection. To encourage users to participate in such crowd-sourcing, it is critical that the information is collected conveniently, with as little user action required as possible, and the use of low-cost sensors that would be ubiquitously available on smart phones. Moreover, unlike the use of GPS, the use of these sensors should consume very little energy, thus resulting in minimal drain on the phone's battery. We propose using the barometer sensor present in mobile phones to detect traffic congestion. Roads which seem perfectly flat to naked eye actually vary in altitude at different points along the way. The barometer sensor is sensitive enough to measure these altitude changes. On a congested road, a vehicle covers a much shorter distance over a time period. A vehicle experiences a significantly larger number of altitude changes on a free flowing road compared to a congested road. This forms the basis for our traffic congestion detection. We extract features based on the altitude change and use a Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classifier to initially classify into two broad categories of vehicular state: still and in motion. The sequence of vehicle states is then used to determine the traffic condition. Traffic condition is categorized into 3 states: `stuck', `congestion' and `moving', based on chosen thresholds for the number of still/motion states. To validate the state determination by our RoadSphygmo1 algorithm, we compared it with the GPS speeds during the same time period. While the thresholds we chose are not exact measures of traffic state, they nevertheless provide useful information about the congestion on the road. Field experiments conducted on the roads in Chandigarh and Mumbai in India show promising results.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"37 41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124265911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fog computing enables independent data-plane computational features at the edge-switches, which serves as a platform for performing certain critical analytics required at the IoT source. To this end, in this paper, we implement a working prototype of Fog computing node based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is chosen as the candidate IoT protocol that transports data generated from IoT devices (a:k:a: MQTT publishers) to a remote host (called MQTT broker). We implement the MQTT broker functionalities integrated at the edge-switches, that serves as a platform to perform simple message-based analytics at the switches, and also deliver messages in a reliable manner to the end-host for post-delivery analytics. We mathematically validate the improved delivery performance as offered by the proposed switch-embedded brokers.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122002551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike other systems proposed in the past, we filter information sources to check for crowdsourcing feasibility and then assess the drug's effectiveness based on its reported detrimental effect on a patient. This helps in eliminating certain drugs that would almost certainly have an adverse effect on the patient's health and thereby obtain a set of recommendable drugs. These recommendations are further refined by analyzing the sentiment behind the opinions of patients who have been administered these drugs in the past. The resultant set of prescribable drugs agrees with those suggested by the consulted physicians for the considered sample set of diabetes patients. The critical assessment of the prototype system for Diabetes Type II drugs by both doctors and patients also reiterates the need for a feedback system that can possibly go a long way in improving patient experience of a drug. This leads us to conclude that PeopleSave, as a combination of the recommendation system prototype and the proposed feedback system, can be successful in improving the process of prescription of medicines for a varied range of medical conditions.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129759357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When multiple actors are competing, the disruption of key assets can create large swings in the profitability of each actor by changing the supply and demand dynamics of the underlying system. These swings in profits can be leveraged by an attacker to extract profits from the system. In this paper, we explore the implications of attacks and defenses on market resilience when faced with a strategic profit-seeking adversary. Changes in the market may mitigate or exacerbate the likelihood of cyber-attacks on system assets, and we present a strategy for optimizing defenses to minimize attacks. We also explore the impact of information sharing on system behavior and the potential for collaboration by the system owners to improve resilience. These design principles are exercised on a model of an interconnected electric power grid to show the potential security improvements provided by architectural changes.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131026337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is a significant challenge for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to deploy HetNet at a large scale due to expensive Operating and Capital Expenditure (OPEX and CAPEX). To address this issue, this paper proposes a new network paradigm where potential small cell sites are encouraged to participate in facilitating HetNet deployment. This idea is inspired by the emerging phenomena of crowdsourcing, a distributed problem-solving approach tapping into the potential of a large and open crowd for a specific goal. In the proposed scheme, we let Donor eNB (DeNB) of existing marco cell be a crowdsourcers who would announce some transmission tasks to potential distributed small cell sites (belonging to individual or third-party community), when the existing network cannot shoulder users requirements. As for the recruited small cell sites, they help the DeNB through relay transmission mode. In order to stimulate more third-party small cell participating in such a paradigm, we proposed an incentive mechanism by using game theory. Moreover, if the serviced UE still cannot be reached after one-hop, we allow those involved small cell sites to play as crowdsourcers, and recruit more potential sites into relay transmission, until the transmission is completed. Extensive simulations are conducted to not only demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed transmission paradigm, but also validate the correctness of the proposed incentive mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":185861,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks (COMSNETS)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132099821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
