Numerical simulations reveal that waveforms not covered by the IEC standards can occur in the event of failures. In the meantime, such waveforms are proposed in the CIGRE TB 852 and 853 for HVDC cable systems. Still, the tolerances are wide, and the comparison of the test results may be difficult. The paper presents an overview about test voltage selection and testing activity performed on a 320 kV XLPE cable (terminations, cable and joints) with a typical length for type test loops, showing tests results. The paper also highlights the good fit between waveforms achieved in laboratory and the one actually happened in the field during operation.","PeriodicalId":185809,"journal":{"name":"2023 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123876764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to maintain the same security and controllability as in existing electrical power grids, it will be necessary the implementation of solutions to increase the reliability and security of power supply despite the growing share of electricity being generated from intermittent RES. In this paper a technology outlook will be presented including challenges and opportunities for grid development planning taking into consideration the perspective of a high standing transmission utility and an HVDC transmission and FACTS technologies supplier. The main focus will be to present the recent developments in the HVDC technology and possible enhancement opportunities to the traditional FACTS technologies to support active and reactive power control.","PeriodicalId":185809,"journal":{"name":"2023 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131818765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An obliged step is to test such equipment before to install it on the grids. Unfortunately, to date, there are no standards directly applicable for the HHB and for the HVDC circuit breakers in general even if an IEC Working Group is working on it. For such reason, the aim of this paper is to provide a type test protocol for the Hybrid HVDC Breaker (HHB) based on the very limited field returns and reduced available literature.","PeriodicalId":185809,"journal":{"name":"2023 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129129395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, introduction of circuit breaker in HVDC links also prompts the need for a detailed assessment of switching overvoltages and polarity reversal, which were not typically of concern for modern voltage source converters-based links, using half bridge modules. The paper deals with the evaluation of switching overvoltages and polarity reversal stresses on overhead and submarine cable HVDC links equipped with dc circuit breakers; the consideration are obviously extendable to all the equipment on the DC side. A simplified theoretical approach is presented, and a comparison is made with transient simulations on the foreseen 500 kV HVDC Italian “Hypergrid”. Results evidence that switching overvoltages and polarity reversals become a significant design factor with the introduction of dc circuit breaker in HVDC links.","PeriodicalId":185809,"journal":{"name":"2023 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115606777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power systems with large shares of converter-interfaced renewables are characterized by low grid inertia due to the lack of frequency containment provided by synchronous generators. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Systems based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology are considered valuable assets to improve frequency regulation capacity levels. HVDC converter stations based on VSC technology are typically able to operate in either grid forming or grid-following modes. The aim of this paper is to highlight the opportunities and challenges of grid forming control for HVDC applications. A special focus will be on contradictory grid forming control performance requirements from European Transmission System Operators (TSOs). The impacts of these requirements on AC grid, HVDC performance and hardware are discussed.","PeriodicalId":185809,"journal":{"name":"2023 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114495554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This infrastructure has a strategic importance, and it is designed to support the energy transition enabling a greater integration of renewable energy sources. The dynamic analysis is performed on a simplified 10-bus simulation model of the continental Italian transmission system linked to an equivalent Sicilian network, and it examines different types of contingencies.
