Reactive oxygen species (ROS) as far as disorders of balance between levels of prooxidants and antioxidants may also participate in the occurrence of IBD. The aim of the present study was an assessment of the antioxidative barrier of the organism in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 99 patients (80 with IBD as a study group and 19 healthy as a control group) from Jan Biziel University Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Venous blood was the material for biochemical analysis: HT, GSH, GPX p , GPX RBC , GST, GR, SOD-1, MDA, NO 2/NO 3-and CP. Results: There were statistically significant differences in oxidative stress parameters observed between the study group and the control group, especially concerning HT, GSH, GPX RBC , GST, SOD-1, MDA and NO 2/NO 3. Discussion: The assumption that increased activity of antioxidative compounds may constitute a defence against the influence of oxidative stress may be true. Their decreased activity may participate in lowering an organism’s abilities to defend against oxidative stress and cause the development of free radical diseases. Further studies into targeted preventive strategies are needed. Conclusions: Prooxidative factors play an essential role in the pathogenesis of IBD. Due to the still un - known etiopathology of IBD, research on imbalances between pro-oxidants and antioxidants should be continued in larger groups of patients.","PeriodicalId":18485,"journal":{"name":"Medical Research Journal","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90714261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The life of persons covered by a specialistic treatment — home mechanical ventilation HMV — depends upon stable supplies of electricity. In case of breakdowns, indispensable aid is given by firemen who deliver generating sets available in Rescue and Firefighting Units (RFU). Aim of the study: Analysis and a statistical presentation of interventions of fire protection units to support the correct operation of home medical machines in case of temporary power failure. Material and methods: Data obtained from the Decision Support System of the State Fire Service (SFS DSS), made available to the authors by the Operational Planning Bureau at the Headquarters of the State Fire Service. In graphical presentations utilized were materials from the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Law on Geodesy and Cartography, viz. Database for Topographic Objects, National Register of Borders. Medical data consistent with the purpose of the study were collected from the analysis of reports compiled by the person in charge of a rescue action of the State Fire Service, which is not the leading service in medical interventions. Results: In 2015–2021 were 1490 local hazards in which case it was necessary to support the operation — in most cases of ventilators for home use among people requiring ventilator-based therapy. The data show a constantly rising trend, the number of such actions increased by 64.29% — from 163 to 276 [mean (M) = 215.86, standard deviation (SD) = 66.35]. The average waiting time for undertaking inter - vention in these types of events was 910.68 seconds (15 min, 10 s). Conclusions: A significant element of rescue actions are volunteer fire brigade squads for being better deployed in rural areas, provided with generating sets; they can ensure faster an emergency electricity source. Persons in charge of a rescue action should draw up the medical part of a report more accurately (concerning the victim and the disease entity) while performing qualified first aid procedures.","PeriodicalId":18485,"journal":{"name":"Medical Research Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89759730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gajda","doi":"10.5603/mrj.a2022.0035","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5603/mrj.a2022.0035","url":null,"abstract":"This article is available in open access under Creative Common Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license, allowing to download articles and share them with others as long as they credit the authors and the publisher, but without permission to change them in any way or use them commercially. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly put a heavy burden on the efficacy of health care system. Recently, Paciorek et al. [1] have reported the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the functioning of emergency medical service (EMS). They observed a decrease in the number of emergency medical team interventions during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the lowest number recorded in the spring of 2020 when the incidence of infections was relatively low. Similar observations were reported by Nadolny et al. [2]. A considerable prolongation of the EMS response time was found in 2020 in comparison with the two-year pre-pandemic period, with the longest delay in the autumn, which corresponded to the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 infections in Poland [1]. These interesting observations complement the image of EMS functioning during the pandemic time [3–7]. Reduction in the rate of hospitalizations for acute heart failure was even more pronounced at the beginning of the pandemic in Poland during the first public lockdown from March to May 2020 [8]. It was suggested that the reluctance to seek professional medical assistance reflected the fear of in-hospital acquisition of COVID-19 [9]. Grandstrom et al. [10] showed that the COVID-19 pandemic discouraged patients from seeking medical care when presenting with an AMI. The emotion of fear reported by patients was related to the external threat to one’s own health, due to COVID-19, rather than fear of symptoms related to an AMI. The media reports, describing the healthcare system as ineffective and overloaded, additionally enhanced the feeling of insecurity and may have had a detrimental influence on the delay to medical care acquisition [10]. Considering these data, it seems advisable to undertake wide-ranging educational initiatives aimed at emphasizing the risks related to the lack of professional medical assistance in life-threatening situations [11–13]. Moreover, long-term studies on the impact of medical system efficacy and patient COVID-19-related behaviors on clinical outcome should provide a better understanding of the extent of “collateral damage” resulting from the pandemic.","PeriodicalId":18485,"journal":{"name":"Medical Research Journal","volume":" 1029","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91409350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
