During the transmissions of wavelet-compressed images such as JPEG2000, errors in high frequency subbands will result in the effects like ring or ripple artifacts around edges. In this paper, we propose an error concealment algorithm to remove these annoying artifacts. This algorithm requires an edge directed filter. Although some known filters can be employed, we tailor-make a new edge directed filter which fits well in our algorithm. The proposed scheme firstly enhances the received damaged image using the edge directed filter. Then the recovered wavelet coefficients are rectified using two constraint functions, which are based on the statistical characteristics in the wavelet domain and the observation that correctly received data must remain unchanged. Simulation results show that the image quality has been significantly improved in terms of both objective and subjective evaluation.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. Two of the essential components in a CAD system are the detection of the suspicious MC pixels/regions using image processing and analysis techniques, and the training, classification, and recognition of these areas based on pattern recognition methods. In this paper, we present a novel scheme to identify and classify microcalcifications based on localized texture comparison. Relying on a texture removal and repairing (R&R) process of the preselected suspicious areas from their surrounding background tissues, pre- and post- R&R local characteristic features of these areas are extracted and compared. A modified AdaBoost algorithm is then adopted to train the classifier using expert-labelled microcalcifications, followed by a clustering process. Experiments with the mammographic images from the MIAS and DDSM databases have shown very promising results.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. We propose a system which does not use an inverse lossless wavelet transform (ILWT) but an inverse wavelet transform (IWT). In this system, we must correct the mean value of rounding errors of each band. We also investigate a mixed-type system which is obtained by applying repeatedly a 4-band non-separable forward lossless wavelet transform (FLWT) for the lowest frequency band. Our simulation shows that the PSNR of the reconstructed image of the non-separable FLWT followed by the IWT is 2.7 dB higher than that of the separable FLWT followed by the ILWT at a bit rate, and that the mixed-type system switching inverse transforms depending on the bit rate has good performance at all bit rates.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. It is based on interpreting the image set as the impulse response of a 3D separable system. As an application it is shown how the approximation steps, including balanced model reduction methods, in the algorithm can be used to suppress noise in 3D image sets. The approach was motivated by a practical problem in the analysis of 3D fluorescent microscopy image data of fluorescently labelled cells.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. This technique applies to both face alignment and recognition and significantly improves three aspects. First, we introduce the local texture attributes to a statistical face model. A texture attribute characterizes the 2-D local feature structures and is used to guide the model deformation. This provides more robustness and faster convergence than with conventional ASM (active shape model). Second, the local texture attributes are modelled by Haar-wavelets, yielding faster processing and more robustness with respect to low-quality images. Third, we use a gradient-based method for model initialization, which improves the convergence. We have obtained good results dealing with test faces that are quite dissimilar with the faces used for statistical training. The convergence area of our proposed method almost quadruples compared to ASM. The Haar-wavelet transform successfully compensates for the additional cost of using 2-D texture features. The algorithm has also been tested in practice with a Webcam, giving (near) real-time performance and good extraction results.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. To achieve an efficient SNR-scalable bit-stream representation of a video sequence, the temporal dependencies between pictures are exploited by using an open-loop subband approach. The related temporal analysis-synthesis filter bank structure is generalized to facilitate an adaptive block-based choice between the motion-compensated lifting representations of the Haar filter (uni-directional prediction) and the 5/3 filter (bi-directional prediction), both coupled with multiple-reference frame capabilities. As a remarkable feature of our approach, most components of H.264/AVC are used as specified in the standard, while only a few have been adjusted to the motion-compensated temporal filtering structure. Our proposed SNR-scalable extension was tested for a set of CIF sequences, and the results indicate that a coding efficiency comparable to that of the state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. Desensitised restoration is applied to blocks of transmitted information before decoding at the receiving site, including their corresponding FECs together with the information data (i.e., JPEG coded image). The proposed desensitisation algorithm improves the restoration with respect to a conventional Wiener filter when using wrong estimates of the required parameters, i.e., wrong estimate of the blurring caused by the multipath fading, noise and statistics of the original image (which are unknown in a real situation).","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004. In area-based methods, the similarity between one pixel of the left image and one pixel of the right image is measured using a correlation index computed on neighborhoods of these pixels. In our method, the neighbor pixels not similar to the center one are excluded when computing the correlation index, which corresponds to adjusting the equivalent size and shape of the correlation neighborhood. Our algorithm yields a precise estimation of the disparity in nontextured areas, while avoiding undesired smoothing at discontinuities. This method is suitable for real-time implantation using specialized hardware. We demonstrate and discuss performances using synthetic stereo pairs.","PeriodicalId":184798,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Image Processing, 2004.
