{"title":"Measuring operational efficiency of the textile industry using DEA technique: a study of the northern state of India","authors":"Ishwar Singh Darji, S. In this light, the purpose of this paper is to examine the operational efficiency of textile manufacturing units in Haryana, a northern state of India.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The study applies data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach consisting of input-oriented CCR and BCC techniques along with the return to scale technique for the analysis of five years of data from 2015–2016 to 2019–2020.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results reveal that Haryana’s textile units have significantly underperformed operationally, with an average technical efficiency score of just 0.25 for five years, from 2015–2016 to 2019–2020. The yearly ratings of the overall technical efficiency of the selected textile companies include 0.20, 0.18, 0.18, 0.40 and 0.28; PTE scores are 0.43, 0.43, 0.55, 0.60, 0.62 and scale efficiency scores 0.54, 0.44, 0.29, 0.71, 0.38, respectively, from 2015–2016 to 2019–2020. On the other hand, average of 5.8 units are functioning at the constant return to scale, 10.2 units are at increasing return to scale and average of 45 units are functioning at decreasing return to scale (DRS). It is found that most of the companies are functioning at a DRS; to boost efficiency, these companies must reduce their input size since they are running at a DRS.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The results of the current paper provide key insight into the inefficiency level of the textile manufacturing industry in the context of northern India. Industry professionals can take corrective measures based on these findings. Moreover, for investors and portfolio managers, knowing which companies are efficient and which are not will help them make better decisions. The study helps policymakers to frame appropriate policy guidelines to make the textile units in the state more efficient and competitive.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has been done so far on the operational performance of the textile industry in Haryana based on the DEA technique. As a result, companies are seeking novel ways of value creation, and one exciting opportunity is the use of DTs in new business creation, where they can offer diverse possibilities for innovative businesses. This paper aims to examine the impacts and challenges of DTs on new business creation in the manufacturing industry.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000This study used a qualitative research approach, which combined semistructured interviews and an iterative Delphi study as research methods. The participants for the interviews and Delphi study were from different sectors and roles in the manufacturing industry. Altogether, 10 interviewees from eight companies took part in the interviews, and the expert panel of the Delphi method contained 12 professionals.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results of the study indicated that DT can significantly impact the business models of manufacturing companies. DT can enhance operations, offer cost savings and business growth and allow stakeholders to focus on core competencies while developing their businesses. This paper aims to identify the LSS barriers (LSSBs) and analyse their interaction via a hierarchical model developed by using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and Fuzzy Matriced Impacts Croise’s Multiplication Appliqué à un Classement (MICMAC). These allow the LSS execution and implementation to be much more effective and avoid the high cost of implementation.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000A structural review of the literature and interviews with experts and professionals from the service industries in the UAE supplied data wherewith to identify LSSBs. Sixteen LSSBs were determined and analysed using ISM and the MICMAC approach to discover the strong drivers and highly dependent barriers. The Fuzzy set was included in the MICMAC analysis to obtain a more precise output and create an effective hierarchical model of the barriers.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The research findings suggest that the top barriers to LSS implementation in service industries are lack of top management commitment, lack of customer focus, resistance to change management and lack of alignment between the LSS and organisational strategy. A deeper analysis using the Fuzzy-MICMAC approach categorises these barriers on the basis of their driving power and dependency.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000The relationships between paired LSSBs were obtained through an experts’ interpretations of limited numbers in one country. Conducting a large-scale survey with a more comprehensive demographic or deep focus in one service industry might deepen our understanding of the interactions of LSSBs and models.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The developed ISM that model suggests that the dependencies and relationships among the barriers must be accurately determined so as to remove the collaborative effect of barriers on the implementation process is at the earliest opportunity. This would improve service companies’ competitive advantage and profitability, drive out waste and reduce the cost associated with poor quality. Similarly, academicians may advocate ways in various issues can contribute to improve LSSBs for amended LSS implementation now that business services are booming in the fourth industrial revolution.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The structural model was developed holistically on the basis of the inputs from practitioners and academicians to ensure its practical validity. Though the model has theoretical foundations, its practical applicability is a key factor in its development, so this approach was helpful for practitioner wanted to focus on removing the key dominant barriers and be able to deploy LSS concepts smoothly in service industries. Drawing upon coordination theory, this study aims to examine the impact of interactions before, during and after meetings on meeting effectiveness.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000A survey design was used, and regular workplace meeting attendees were recruited. A mediation model was developed to test the effect of interactions on perceived meeting effectiveness.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Interactions before meetings positively influenced attendee involvement during the meeting, and attendee involvement mediated the positive relationship between attendee interactions during the meeting and perceived meeting effectiveness. A novel finding of this study is that incorporating meeting outcomes in subsequent work positively influenced perceived meeting effectiveness because it fostered common understanding of the meeting agenda.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The present results link prior empirical findings on interactions before and during meetings to new predictions regarding the effect of interactions after meetings. Nevertheless, financial slack resources are useful to boost innovation that enhances environmental performance. Environmental performance improvement seems to be more a matter of managerial commitment and strategic approach towards sustainability, rather than the availability of slack resources.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000Due to literature shortcomings on which effects slack resources can have on environmental performance, this paper sheds some light on the topic while also highlighting the role of management commitment, corporate sustainability strategy and innovation.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000Managers should use financial slack resources in innovation activities to improve environmental performance. This paper aims to examine the influence of network management on the value created by SNs and the mediation role of resources and relationship quality.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The authors distributed a survey to 126 companies linked to SNs in the Brazilian information and communication technology sector. This study tested the hypothesized relationships using partial least squares structural equation modelling.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000This study found that network management directly influences value creation. Furthermore, the exchange and combination of resources mediate the relationship between the two constructs. Surprisingly, the quality of the relationships does not mediate the relationship between management and the value created. However, it positively impacts the exchange and combination of complementary resources.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This study provides a new interpretation of the determinants of value creation in SNs. The results contribute to the theory by demonstrating that the relationship between network management and value creation is strengthened when the exchange and combination of resources between network participants occur. Worldwide innovation predicts the performance of any firm. Today, the construction industry in Pakistan is booming, which reinforces the need for a study on innovation and KM in this sector.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000This empirical study uses a correlational research design. An online survey questionnaire was used as a data collection method. Through convenient sampling, the sample comprised 277 employees from different construction firms working under the Defence Housing Authority (a construction company operating in major cities) in Pakistan. Data were analysed through partial least squares-structural equation modelling (Smart PLS-SEM version 3) to assess the hypothesis.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Data analysis reveals that KM dimensions, knowledge acquisition, application and protection positively and significantly influence organisational performance; however, knowledge conversion is insignificant. Furthermore, innovation positively and substantially mediates the relationship between knowledge acquisition, application, protection, organisational performance and the insignificant terms of knowledge conversion.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000This study is limited to the construction industry, and future research should be conducted on larger scales for better generalisation. Other mediators between KM and organisational performance (i.e. organisational complexity, workplace environment, employee knowledge-sharing attitude) should be investigated.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000These results are crucial and encourage managers in the construction industry, especially from a developing country like Pakistan, to understand the importance of innovation, the application of KM and the essential role it has in boosting business performance.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This research contributes to the scholarly debate on the mediating role of innovation in the relationship between KM and organisational performance. However, usage of the QCir method for the development of education is still a perplexing, scattered and scarcely attended domain. This paper aims at defining boundaries of categories of topics that could be considered relevant discussions to this domain.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000With the basis of Soft Systems Methodology theory and concept development research method, this paper structured a taxonomy of categories of topics. Additionally, this paper afterwards performed a structured analysis, based on the taxonomy, of the total literature relevant to the “quality circles for education” domain.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results revealed that this line of interest, although limitedly researched, is still alive today, and not dead as was claimed in some studies. However, the core and amount of empirical evidence is yet insufficient for the necessary progress of knowledge of this domain due to the type of research methods used most of the time. Also, fortunately, because of the tabulated structure, the analysis clearly showed the niche topics under this area that are ripe ground for new research. Furthermore, this paper has shed light on another possible future line of research that plugs this domain into a set of synonym circles used in the pedagogy realm.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This paper introduced land marks and border for a subject that was left limitedly visited and scattered for some time, although it was positively praised in several studies.
