The prototype system consists of one accelerometer, a low-powered 16-bit microcontroller, RAM, real time clock and battery. This prototype device was used to investigate its feasibility of using accelerometers to monitor human posture. A subject who had kyphosis (round back) for many years wore the system for two days. The system provided feedback to the subject only on the second day. These controllers guarantee the stability of the bifurcated operating solution near the stall point. However, how robust these controllers could be is still not clear. In this paper, local robust analysis is considered as a method to evaluate feedback control design for rotating stall. In particular, the set of admissible uncertainty is characterized analytically in terms of feedback control gain so that it is possible to compare the robustness of controllers with different feedback gains and select a proper robust controller for axial flow compressors. Indeed, since the characterization conditions of the uncertainty set are computable, the size of the set could then be 'computed' out so that a robust controller, which should tolerate a 'larger' uncertainty set, could be identified.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. However, with the development of the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, large number of channels of lights with different wavelengths are used to transmit data within one single fiber. This increases the bandwidth capacity of a single fiber by tens or even hundreds of times. DWDM has been deployed for long-haul transmissions and will surely change the landscape of fiber-to-the-home network architecture and protocols. Utilizing the bandwidth capability of DWDM to deliver broadband integrated services to homes is an important area of research. This paper presents a virtual star network architecture based on the very high channel count DWDM (VHCC-DWDM) framework, which uses the wavelength channels within one fiber to link the users with the service providers or the edge routers of the Internet. The paper discusses the network architectural issues, which include the network topology, the very high channel count DWDM, the wideband-low-loss fiber for access networks, and the user premises. The physical stress placed on system components can be much higher in bad weather than that encountered under normal weather conditions. The conventional approach to incorporate bad weather in the predictive assessment of redundant transmission line facilities is to divide the overall weather conditions into the two states of normal and adverse weather. This paper illustrates the conventional approach to predictive reliability assessment using a two-state weather model and extends these concepts to recognize extremely adverse weather conditions. However, it is very hard to detect a neutral face in practical applications because the distinction between facial movement and head movement is difficult to make. In order to solve this distinction problem, the initialization of the head position using the central point of each eye and the tip of the nose is first made. Facial movements are then extracted. Based on the detected neutral faces, the changing processes of facial expressions can be recognized using the recognition algorithm for facial expressions which is described based on the fuzzy expert system. In particular, the problem of finding the deviations along both X and Y directions is formulated as a matching process between the saved template of the desired position and the pictures of real static targets captured by a 'vision' element (for example, a CCD camera) through correlation analysis of the spatial shifts in 2-dimension. It is noted that the size of the captured images by the vision element can be reduced in our design in order to accommodate fast real-time application with reasonable accuracy and reliability. Optical switches perform the key functions of flexible routing, reconfigurable optical cross-connect (OXC), network protection and restoration, etc. in optical networks. Wavelength converters are used to shift one incoming wavelength to another outgoing wavelength when this needs to be done at an OXC node. They can effectively alleviate the blocking probability and help to resolve contention at the output port of switches. The deployment of wavelength converters within optical switches provides robust routing, switching: and network management in the optical layer, which is critical to the emerging all-optical Internet. However, the high cost of wavelength converters at the current stage of fabrication technology is a key issue when we design node architectures for an optical network. The key challenge when designing an MLDRAM is to ensure reliable operation using the more closely spaced signal levels despite the presence of on-chip noise and the inevitable small variations in circuit parameters that occur in integrated circuit (IC) production. This paper describes a test chip that implements an inherently balanced and robust MLDRAM scheme proposed by Birk et al. (see 1999 IEEE Int. Workshop on Memory Tech., Design and Testing, San Jose, CA, USA, p.102-109.). The chip has an adjustable cell capacity that can be selected from among 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 bits per cell. Fractional bits arise when groups of two or more cells are considered together. Thus if each cell in a pair stores one of six possible levels, then each cell has a capacity of 2.5 bits. This paper presents a proposed strategy for optimal active power flow using a modified Hopfield neural network. The objective function is the incremental generation cost function in quadratic form which is expanded in a second-order Taylor series. The equality and inequality constraints are modelled using a linearized network and appended to the objective function using suitable penalty functions to form an augmented cost function. The Hopfield neural network was simulated on a digital computer for fourteen-bus and thirty-bus test system.
