Experiments were performed in a bench-scale, indirectly-heated, fluidized bed reactor. Data were obtained over a range of temperatures and equivalence ratios representative of commercial biomass gasification processes. An assay of all major nitrogenous components of the gasification products was performed for the first time, providing a clear accounting of the evolution of FBN. Results indicate that: (1) NH/sub 3/ is the dominant nitrogenous gas species produced during pyrolysis of biomass; (2) the majority of FBN is converted to NH/sub 3/ or N/sub 2/ during gasification; relative levels of NH/sub 3/ and N/sub 2/ are determined by thermochemical reactions which are affected strongly by temperature; and (3) N/sub 2/ appears to be produced from NH/sub 3/ in the gas phase.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. (see ibid., p.1156-64, 1997) described an OSC-derived methodology for the coupled thermal, fluid flow, and electrical analyses of AMTEC cells with multiple Beta Alumina Solid Electrolyte (BASE) tubes, and illustrated its application to a specific cell design. This paper describes parametric results obtained by applying the same procedure to 39 variations of that cell design to determine the effect of 24 individual design variables on cell performance. For each of the 24 design variables, OSC performed detailed analyses of two designs that were identical except for that variable. This served to isolate the effect of that variable on the cell's power, efficiency, and critical temperatures. The paper presents the results of those analyses, and explains the reasons for the design decisions made by OSC. Subsequently, it describes the results of parametric analyses to determine the effect of temperature margin, input thermal power, and output voltage on the cell's critical temperatures and performance.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. The prototype consists of a diffusion type burner which uses propane and forced air as the inlet fuels. The combustion process is forced to take place inside a cylindrical geometry emitter and heats the emitter. As a result, the emitter radiates the PV cells, which are arranged around the emitter. The PV cells then convert radiant energy to electricity. A thin quartz tube is placed between the emitter and the PV cells to prevent the combustion products from contaminating the PV cells. The PV cells are cooled using forced convection air. In this paper, the authors used novel material processing approaches to produce a cylindrical metallic alloy emitter (\"blackbody\" emitter) and a rare earth oxide emitter (selective emitters). The emitters are of a fibrous structure and have high porosity (about 90 vol.%). Highly porous emitters emits high emittance and also allows the combustion products through them. By using these emitters, the influence of emitter types on the overall TPV efficiency is determined.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. Operational options are solar-only, gas augmented and gas-only mode. Also the design of a second generation hybrid heat pipe receiver currently developed under a EU-funded project, based on the experience gained with the first hybrid receiver, is reported. These AMTEC cells are being built by Advanced Modular Power Systems, Inc. (AMPS) with design input from Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC), Nichols Research Corporation (NRC), Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies (ISNPS), and PL/VTVP. Tests are performed in a prototypical environment to demonstrate feasibility and identify bottlenecks to performance and endurance as well as to provide design feedback. Test results for two major design iterations of the PX series cells are discussed. The data shows that continued improvements made to the cell design have continually increased electric power output and conversion efficiency. To date, the best performance from a PX-series cell tested at PL/VTVP was an electric power output of 4.3 watts and a conversion efficiency of /spl sim/14%. These data imply that design goals of 6 watts and 22% efficiency per cell will be surpassed.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. It takes account for the flushing phase, i.e. for that part of the blow involved in removing the residue of fluid from a previous blow. The proposed analytical approach is based on a Lagrange viewpoint for evaluating the fluid temperature and involves some mathematical difficulties for calculating the matrix temperature, as the solution of a linear integral equation, whose overcoming is discussed in the text. The developed method allows, indeed, the matrix and gas temperature profiles within the regenerator to be obtained also. The obtained results are very useful for the heat regenerators adopted in Stirling cycle machines, where the time required for an element of gas to pass through the regenerator is approximately equal to the blow time. In addition, the availability of a closed-form expression for the regenerator effectiveness is useful especially for those engines, like the free-piston Stirling engine, whose design requires the application of analytically based optimization criteria.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. Due to the failure of the Conestoga launch vehicle, this will be the first flight of a modular concentrator array. SCARLET will provide 2.6 kW to the DS1 spacecraft to be launched in July 1998 for a mission that includes fly-bys of the asteroid McAuliffe, Mars and the comet West-Kohoutek-Ikemura. Paradoxically, in some parasitic applications, a low conversion efficiency can be viewed as a distinct advantage. However, commercially available thermoelectric modules are designed primarily for refrigerating applications and are less reliable when operated at elevated temperatures. Consequently, a major factor which determines the economic competitiveness of thermoelectric recovery of waste heat is the \"cost per watt divided by the mean-time between module failures\". In this paper, the authors report the development of a waste, warm water powered thermoelectric generator, one target in a NEDO sponsored project to economically recover waste heat. As an application of this technology case studies are considered in which thermoelectric generators are operated in both \"active\" and \"parasitic\" modes to generate electrical power for a central heating system. It is concluded that, in applications when the supply of heat essentially is free as with waste heat, thermoelectrics can compete economically with conventional methods of electrical power generation. Also, in this situation, and when the generating system is operated in a parasitic mode, conversion efficiency is not an important consideration.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. The concepts of free-energy, zero-point energy, and over-unity devices are not new, and many examples of such devices have been built within the last 100 years.
