Using the Quick Mind Testing method, the efficiency of cognitive functions in kayakers after physical training combined with whole body cryotherapy was assessed. Material and methods. The athletes (n = 17) performed the Quick Mind Testing on the first day and at the end of a 2-month training cycle, as well as before and after whole body cryotherapy conducted between the 5th and the 15th day of the cycle. Cryotherapy was administered twice a day, before and after training (20 sessions altogether). One cryotherapy session lasted 3 mins with the temperature gradually decreased from the initial -120 o C to the final -145 o C. Results. After the training period, the kayakers committed approx. 2 times less incorrect Go and NoGo reactions, and approx. 12% more correct NoGo (p < .004) reactions, as well as gave more correct answers in the ATTENTION test (p < .004) than on the first day of training. After cryotherapy, as compared with the results obtained before the cryochamber stimulation, the kayakers gave more correct answers in the ATTENTION test. Conclusions. Physical training combined with whole body cryotherapy increases the mental efficiency of kayakers, which may affect the efficiency of physical exercise.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"64 1","pages":"5-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90745090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much attempts have been taken to control and cure this decease among them Interferons have been widely used during recent two decades. Therefore, the present research aims to examine the effect of Cinnovex on patients have used it compared with the similar medicine Avonex. Methods: This clinical randomized trial was performed in order to test the effect of Cinnovex impact on clinical symptoms of patients suffering from relapsing- remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) at Poursina hospital in Rasht in 2007 for one year. Patients were divided into three 40 subject groups receiving Cinnovex, Avonex and a control group. The patients’ EDSS and disease relapse were measured at the beginning and at the end of the test. The data analyzed by SPSS 20. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There was no significant difference between EDSS of patients at the beginning of the study (1.95 ± 1.08) and EDSS of patients after one year experiment (1.97 ± 1.36). Also, based relapse (1.4 ± 0.7) decreased (P < 0.01) and a significant variance was found between EDSS of the patients received Cinnovex (1.97 ± 1.36) and the control group (3.06 ± 1.8) after one year (P < 0.001). In addition, Cinnovex and Avonex effects did not show a meaningful difference with each other. Conclusions: It seems that Cinnovex can prevent from relapse and progress of EDSS of relapsing- remitting MS patients.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76832302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seasonal studies on morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of camel reproductive organs are rare. This study aimed to elucidate the morphometric changes and immunoreactivities of S-100 and alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in dromedary camel efferent ductules during rutting (reproductive) and non-rutting (non-reproductive) seasons. Methods: Simple (proximal part) and pseudo-stratified (distal part) columnar epithelium lined the efferent ductules, which contained ciliated and non-ciliated cells that gave the epithelial lining its wavy shape. Results: The epithelium was significantly higher and stereocilia were insignificantly longer during non-breeding season as compared to breeding season. There was a significant increase in luminal diameter and muscular coat thickness during breeding season. The epithelium of proximal and distal segments as well as smooth muscles and surrounding connective tissue exhibited positive S-100 reactions during breeding and non-breeding seasons; this reaction was stronger in breeding season than non-breeding season. The epithelial cell reaction was negative or very weak to α-SMA during breeding and non-breeding seasons, whereas smooth muscle and surrounding connective tissue showed positive reaction which was stronger in breeding season. Conclusion: In conclusion, S-100 and α-SMA show seasonal morphometric and immunoreactivities variations in camel efferent ductules; these variations could be associated with the physiological condition during breeding and non-breeding seasons.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85467680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A purposive sample of 67 women with diabetes mellitus, attending a diabetes clinic participated. An interview schedule, comprising of sixteen risk factors, adopted from the 25 item Heart Disease Fact Questionnaire and eight items, derived from literature, was used to measure heart disease risk factor knowledge and the link between diabetes and heart disease. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation test and regression analysis were used to analyze data, at a significance level of < 0.05. Knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors was low (mean score = 13.4, SD = 5.7, range 0-21 out of 24), compared to earlier findings among Spanish speakers with diabetes mellitus (mean score = 17,5, SD = 5, range 0-24). Only residence was predictive of knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors (r = 0,308, p <.05. Thus residence is associated with increased knowledge. The effect of residence (R2 =. 095, F = 6.811, p = <. 05), explained 9.5% of the variance in knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors. The results showed that women with diabetes had low knowledge of established cardiovascular disease risk factors, mainly diet, family history and smoking. Provision of culturally relevant education should be prioritized to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in women with diabetes in Zimbabwe.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"195 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75435006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A descriptive study design was used with a convenience sample of 30 orphan caregivers in Bikita province ward 15, Masvingo, Zimbabwe. Permission to carry out the study was obtained from the respective ethical review boards. Informed consent was obtained from all the participants. Data was collected using face to face interviews following a structured questionnaire. Results: The main findings were that 73.3% of the respondents were elderly caregivers and that there were more widows 20 (66%) than married caregivers, 8 (27%). Being old meant that these caregivers needed to be taken care of themselves. They needed additional information on caring for the young nowadays which is different to what they experienced. About 24 (80%) caregivers had financial problems yet all the caregivers needs require money. Conclusions: Growing of vegetables, maize and selling any surplus was the main coping strategy of orphan caregivers. The main coping strategy is working of the orphan caregivers; however there is need of providing vocational skills and income generating projects by the authorities in the community.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"222 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79917585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of distal humeral fractures treatment with particular focus on type-C fractures according to the AO/ASIF classification. The material of the study was composed of 60 patients between 25 and 82 years of age, treated in the Clinical Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the University Hospital No. 1 in Bydgoszcz in the years 2009-2011. The patients were subject to operative treatment with the use of four techniques (ORIF – LCP-type plate, ORIF – AO-type plate, ORIF – AO screw(s), CRIF – K-wires). The average patient observation period was 18.7 months (±5.9). Patients under the study were subject to observation and functioning of the elbow joint was evaluated after surgery according to the MEPI score. Patients suffering from type-B fractures recorded better treatment results than those suffering from type-C fractures: p = 0.046. The differences between type A and types B and C have been statistically insignificant: p > 0.05. No impact of any type of fixation on the results of treatment has been recorded. In type-C group of fractures according to AO/ASIF, statistical analysis has shown advantage to the benefit of fixation with dedicated anatomical LCP plates and AO plates (p = 0.046). In this group, operative treatment using the aforesaid methods achieved good and excellent results (MEPI ≥ 75 points) in 81% of cases. Good treatment results depend on proper patient qualification for a particular surgical procedure and may be achieved also for type-C intra-articular fractures, provided that anatomical reduction of articular surface and stable plate osteosynthesis are obtained. In other types of distal humeral fractures (types A and B) similar treatment results may be obtained using different operative treatment techniques.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"101 1","pages":"57-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88022553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neurogenic bladder (NB) is specific condition caused by disturbed bladder innervation and the most often complication of meningomyelocele (MMC). It is known that incorrect bladder function causes renal damage. Condition of  NB is worsened by urinary tract infections, detrusor overactivity, dysfunctional voiding and/or irregular catheterization. hs-CRP plays an important role in inflammatory process and can predict kidney function.  The aim of this study was the estimation of urinary hs-CRP level in association with neurogenic bladder function based on urodynamics and renal function based on eGFR in MMC patients with various activity states and with different levels of lesion. Material and methods. 33 children and adolescents with urodynamically  confirmed neurogenic bladder and 20 healthy individuals were enrolled into the study. Patients were divided according to Hoffer’s scale and level of lesion. Urinary hs-CRP were evaluated in all individuals using ELISA methods. Urinary hs-CRP results were adjusted to the creatinine and expressed as hs-CRP/creatinine ratio. Nonparametric tests were used for statistical analysis. Results. When compared to the reference group, MMC patients showed increased urinary hs-CRP. There were no differences in the studied parameter between boys and girls, non- and catheterized, and with different urodynamic diagnosed children. We found positive correlations between Hoffer’s scale assessing physical activity and level of lesion and between GFR and urinary hs-CRP/crea. Conclusion. Urinary hs-CRP level is elevated in MMC patients compared to reference group and could be considered as a very early marker of glomerular hyperfiltration.","PeriodicalId":18339,"journal":{"name":"Medical and Biological Sciences","volume":"41 1","pages":"49-56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88015369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
