There is limited information about the prevalence of injuries in Bharatanatyam dancers.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries and specifics of dance training in female Bharatanatyam dancers in the Udupi district of India.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>We developed and tested a survey for Bharatanatyam dancers regarding injury history in the prior year, including location, time loss, cause, and need for medical help. We also obtained demographic and training information.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>101 dancers completed the survey. 10.8% of dancers reported musculoskeletal injuries because of participation in dance. They sustained 0.65 injuries/1,000 hours of dancing. The most frequently injured areas were ankle (27.2%) and knee (27.2%) followed by lower back (13.6%) and hip (9%). Despite being injured, 36.4% of the dancers continued to dance. 54.5% of the injured dancers sought the help of a medical professional for their dance-related injuries. The most common surface for dance was concrete followed by other hard surfaces such as marble and tile.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Female Bharatanatyam dancers are prone to injuries of the lower extremity and back. Most dancers in our study practice the Pandanalluru style on hard surfaces. Studies in biomechanics have the potential to provide such tools. In order to better understand the mechanisms through which PRMP manifest in pianists, especially in the distal segments of the upper limbs, the current study quantifies wrist internal loading (WIL) and wrist impact loading frequency. It does so while discussing pianists' motor behaviours and observed effort-reduction strategies in the wrists as a function of anthropometry. This concept has great utility for performers. A VICON 3D motion capture system documented two expert pianists performing a B major scale, hands together, at 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 notes/sec. Biomechanical modeling quantified WIL. Changes in motor behaviour were observed at 8 notes/sec. Individualized anthropometry influenced the range of motor strategies available to each pianist. The pianist with the larger hand span employed a flexion/extension wrist strategy as a compensatory means for effort reduction, while the pianist with the smaller hand span employed a radial/ ulnar deviation strategy. We aimed to investigate: 1) the association between empowering (EMC) and disempowering (DMC) motivational-climate and musculoskeletal injuries in ballet, and 2) if EMC moderates the association between DMC and injuries.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional cohort survey-study was conducted online among ballet dancers (>18 yrs old) reporting acute and overuse injuries of the previous 2 years. Motivational climate was assessed with the Empowering-and-Disempowering Motivational Climate Questionnaire (5-point Likert scale). The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Overuse Injury Questionnaire assessed severity of overuse injuries. Linear regression was performed adjusted for the confounders age, sex, expertise, experience, and initiation-age with an interaction term between EMC and DMC to assess effect modification.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>An international sample of 189 dancers (26.7±7.9 yrs; 130 professionals) reported 197 acute and 465 overuse injuries (in the previous 2 years). Mean EMC was 3.1±1.07, DMC 3.3±1.08. EMC was associated with less acute (b=-0.22; 95%CI -0.40 to -0.04) and overuse injuries (b=-0.74; 95%CI -0.99 to -0.50), while DMC was associated with more injuries (acute: b=0.30; 95%CI 0.13 to 0.47; overuse: b=0.74; 95%CI 0.50 to 0.98). When tested together and adjusted for confounders, EMC lost its protective effect (acute: b=-0.15; 95%CI -0.19 to 0.49; overuse: b=-0.34; 95%CI -0.81 to 0.13). DMC was positively associated with injuries throughout all settings (acute: b=0.43; 95%CI 0.10 to 0.76; overuse: b=0.46; 95%CI 0.00 to 0.91). EMC showed no moderating effects on DMC in the adjusted models.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>To avoid injuries, it is not enough to create an EMC, because any disempowering nuances may negatively affect empowering climates. We examined test-retest reliability in 58 dancers within a 10-day period, using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,1). In a sample of 265 healthy and injured dancers, the following were examined: 1) construct validity, comparing the DFOS-IT to SF-36 using Pearson correlations; 2) exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency; and 3) sensitivity, by generating receiver operating characteristic curves and determining area under the curve (AUC). In a subgroup of 44 dancers, we determined internal responsiveness across three time-points using repeated measures ANOVA (p<0.05). Injured dancers' scores were analyzed for floor and ceiling effects.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The DFOS-IT demonstrated very high test-retest reliability (ICC≥0.98). Single-factor loading in exploratory factor analysis supported unidimensionality of the scale, with high internal consistency (a=0.93). DFOS-IT total, activities of daily living (ADL), and Dance Technique scores had strong construct validity compared with scores on the SF-36 PCS (r≥0.71). There was excellent sensitivity, with high AUC values (AUC≥0.80). Sources pertaining to violin playing and teaching traditions as well as musicians' medicine research offer only imprecise and contradictory recommendations regarding suitable instrument positions. The aim of this study was to add to a growing scientific base for teaching and medical counseling regarding violin positioning. The study evaluated muscle activation (EMG) and subjectively perceived effort (Borg scale) in four standardized typical violin positions, as well as the violinists' normally used one. The hypothesis, the smaller the angle between the instrument's longitudinal axis (LoAx) and the player's central sagittal plane (CSP) and the angle between its lateral axis (LatAx) and the player's horizontal plane (HP), the more muscle activation and perceived effort in the violinist's left arm, was confirmed: Decreasing the LoAx-CSP angle from 50° to 20° and the LatAx-HP angle from 50° to 20° resulted in a highly significant and independent increase of EMG and Borg scale self-ratings mean values. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using inductive thematic analysis.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Five overarching themes were identified: (i) impact (physical and mental), (ii) opportunity, (iii) developing routine, (iv) client-therapist relationship, and (v) transformation. All participants reported positive physical changes to their shoulder including increases in strength, stability, range of motion, less pain, \"clicking\" and \"clunking,\" improved posture, muscle memory, as well as carry-over to functional circus activities. The pandemic's mental impact varied across the cohort, with positive and negative experiences described in relation to cognitive, social, and affective factors. Most performers felt the pandemic provided an opportunity to focus on rehabilitation of their shoulder. The program effects were also underpinned by positive client-therapist relationships and a progressive transformation of learning where students gained knowledge of their condition, developed tools to manage their current shoulder impairment, and learned how to apply this new knowledge to future management of their condition.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>A shoulder exercise intervention delivered via teleconsultation during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in subjective reports of positive physical changes to the participants' shoulder health complaint. {"title":"Brazilian Version of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM-Br): Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Properties.","authors":"Frederico Barreto Kochem,&nbsp;Julio G Silva","doi":"10.21091/mppa.2021.3020","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21091/mppa.2021.3020","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objective: </strong>The present study aimed to adapt and validate the self-report tool named Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM-Br) into the Brazilian Portuguese language for professional orchestra musicians.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The cross-cultural adaptation process was divided into nine steps. Five experts evaluated the equivalences among versions and the content validity ratio (CVR). The structural validity was verified by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Construct validity was checked by convergent/divergent validity by comparing the results obtained by the MPIIQM-Br, the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire-optional module (DASH-PAM), and the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI). Finally, reliability was tested with internal consistency and test-retest reliability.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In total, 273 professional orchestra musicians (137 males) participated. The researchers found good equivalence among versions, and the CVR reached 0.99. EFA (n=212) showed that the MPIIQM-Br had two factors that explained 70% of the total variance. The convergent validity confirmed a strong positive correlation (r>0.7) and the divergent validity established a low correlation (r<0.4). Both internal consistency (Cronbach's a=0.90) and temporal stability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.84) obtained high values.</p><p><strong>Discussion: </strong>The psychometric evaluation showed a two-dimensional structure, internal consistency, and temporal stability similar to the original tool and the German and Polish versions of the MPIIQM. However, the pain prevalence rates among Brazilian musicians were higher. A self-administered questionnaire comprising of demographic profile, dhol player characteristics, presence of musculoskeletal pain, and specific area of pain according to the body region was used to collect information from the dhol players.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The mean age and duration of playing dhol experience were 22.26±3.05 and 6.08±1.27 years, respectively. Among 96 dhol players, 93 (96.9%) and 55 (57.3%) reported presence of musculoskeletal pain with respect to the 12-month prevalence and 7-day prevalence, respectively. In 12-month prevalence, the most common site of pain was the low back (67.7%), followed by shoulder (54.2%) and wrist and hand (24%). In 7-day prevalence, the most common site of pain was the low back (41.7%), followed by shoulder (24%) and upper back (15.6%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age (p=0.002) and duration of playing dhol (p<0.001) were associated with 7-day prevalence of musculoskeletal pain.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The findings of this study indicated high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in dhol players. Low back, shoulder, wrist/hand, and upper back were common sites of pain. Historic bias within the discipline of dance, however, establishes a long-standing stigma that gains in muscle mass and strength lessen a dancer's aesthetic appearance, and thus many dancers rebuff STC as a supplement to dance training. However, there is growing evidence that dancers and dance educators are beginning to under¬stand the importance of additional resistance training and cardiovascular conditioning. This study explored dancers' perceptions and utilization of STC using a general qualitative approach.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Twenty-three female collegiate dancers (13 contemporary dancers, 10 ballet dancers, mean age 19.95 ± 0.97 yrs) volunteered to participate in this study. The principal investigator conducted individual, semi-structured interviews.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Inductive analysis revealed three major themes: 1) evolving body image, 2) motivation, and 3) education. Trustworthiness was established using member checks, peer debriefing, and journaling. This study concluded collegiate dancers utilized STC as a means to enhance the individual's body image. This was driven by a continuum of motivating factors. Although collegiate dancers are utilizing STC, education on STC techniques and practices was minimal.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>While further research is needed, results from this study suggest STC could be initiated and promoted in the discipline of dance to further enhance physical fitness and general well-being.
