Traditional content-based publish/subscribe systems define a publication as a set of properties (i.e., name-value pairs), while a subscription is defined as a set of various constraints on publication properties. Therefore, they basically define a publication and subscription as a point and hyper-rectangle in a multidimensional attribute space, respectively. In this paper we focus on a geospatial publish/subscribe system in which each publication and subscription content is extended with a geospatial object (e.g., a point or polygon). Such an object is used to express the location of a published event or subscription interest. To efficiently match incoming publications in real-time with a set of stored subscriptions, it is necessary to index subscriptions in an appropriate data structure. Spatial indices are typically used in literature for indexing of geospatial objects. In this paper we experimentally evaluate the performance of several spatial indices when used for indexing of geospatial subscriptions in order to efficiently match incoming publications with stored subscriptions.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"125 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129711293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While in the past most of education in basic networking relied upon studying theory and learning standard protocols, today the hands-on experience is gaining paramount importance. In this paper, after briefly explaining how SDN changed the learning experience, we present a portable, low-cost, self-contained hardware laboratory to experiment with real SDN networks based on OpenFlow switches, valuable for both teaching and research. We then show some use-case that can be investigated within possible projects developed using this testbed. Though devised mainly for SDN, we will show that this testbed can support experimentation also of traditional switching concepts, such as packet classification. Finally, we introduce a short demonstration that can be presented live at the conference.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129116407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A model of such an interdisciplinary programme focussed on information and communication technology (ICT) is considered, with particular attention to the transnational and intercultural context. Blended mobility, student teamwork and project-based learning as interconnected components of the programme are elaborated. Two created and implemented study programmes supported by Erasmus, the EU Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sports, are presented as case studies.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115483325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many problems, such as roaming and standardized data exchange between the citizen and the public safety answering point (PSAP) were recently addressed in the Pan-European Mobile Emergency Application (PEMEA) standard; some remain strictly in the domain of the vendors, for example, deep integration with the mobile operating systems. However, a broader set of problems relates to communication and mobile networks: the way such calls are charged, prioritized, and integrated with the back-office systems of the telecom providers. We explore how some of these challenges could be addressed in 5G networks with their strong focus on softwarization, virtualization, network slicing and mobile edge computing. Finally, we also address several business-related challenges, such as user awareness, application discoverability and usability, and present our attempt at addressing low user awareness in critical situations.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123346486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exposure parameters of image sensor sensitivity (ISO), aperture and shutter speed are included. A static OCC link with a 8×8 red, green and blue (RGB) LED array employed as the transmitter and a smartphone camera as the receiver is demonstrated to verify the study. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis at different ISO values, the effect of aperture and shutter speed on communication link quality is performed. While SNRs of 20.6 dB and 16.9 dB are measured at 1 m and 2 m transmission distance, respectively for a ISO value of 100, they are decreased to 17.4 dB and 13.32 dB for a ISO of 800. The bit error rate (BER) of a 1 m long OCC link with a camera’s shutter speed of 1/6000 s is 1.3×10−3 (i.e., below the forward error correction BER limit of 3.8×10−3) and is dropped to 0.0125 at a shutter speed of 1/20 s. This study provides insight of the basic smartphone settings and the exposure adjustment for further complex OCC links.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122979577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The beam quality factor and its effect on laser beam are investigated using the generalized anisotropic non-Kolmogorov power spectrum such that anisotropy property of turbulence, general spectral power law, and turbulence inner and outer scales can be considered together. We derive new expressions of beam quality factor for the lowest-order Gaussian beam and higher-mode Hermite-Gaussian beam. The effect of beam quality factor on the beam intensity through turbulence is also analyzed. Numerical results are presented to exhibit influences of different turbulence parameters on the beam quality factor and further on the propagation of laser beam, which provides a better understanding for OWC over free space.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127155630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even more important, most of these models cannot predict the influence on the ranging estimate produced by ultra-wideband systems. These ranging estimates are critical for localization systems, which are one of the main use cases for ultra-wideband technology. In this contribution we present a physical layer simulation environment that is able to simulate the impact of interference, multipath, noise, pulse shape and hardware components like amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters and more on bit error rate and ranging error. Parallel computing is employed to keep simulation times in a reasonable time frame, while simulation results and input parameters are stored in a database to allow an easy exchange of data with third party software. With this software system architects are able to simulate UWB system level behavior and tweak individual parameters to achieve optimal overall performance.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117211167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the scenario, it can be particularly challenging to mitigate the influence of this sort of impairment, which is mainly due to its random walk property. In this context, the shaping of phase noise is an important task throughout the simulation phase of a project. Using several masks recommended for satellite communications, we discuss two major modeling methods with respect to their accuracy and computational complexity: the first one is based on discrete Fourier transforms, the second one uses a bank of recursive filters. Furthermore, we address the limitations to mitigate the impact of phase noise by means of a tracking module. Finally, the performance degradation of a DVB-S2x implementation is illustrated, which has been investigated in the framework of several projects guided by the European Space Agency.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122912455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a restricted accessibility system, a new call may be blocked even if available bandwidth units do exist at the time of its arrival. In the two-link system, each particular link has a low and a high threshold. Both thresholds express the number of in-service calls in the link. The low threshold shows the point up to which the link can support offloaded calls from the other link. The high threshold shows the point where one link starts offloading calls to the other link. The two-link system with restricted accessibility is modelled as a loss model whose steady state probabilities do not have a product form solution. In order to determine the main teletraffic performance metric in this model which is call blocking probabilities, we propose an approximate method. The accuracy of this method is verified via simulation and found to be quite satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":182429,"journal":{"name":"2019 15th International Conference on Telecommunications (ConTEL)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117279698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
