The common failure is dielectric break downs due to insulator wear and tear. The goal is to develop a non destructive, non contact testing method to predict the location of these failures for preventive maintenance work. Partial discharges (PD) are emitted in the case of insulator deterioration. This paper focuses on the development of methods/algorithm to accurately locate and detect these PD signals within the 3D space of a medium voltage (MV) switch gear. Along with this, the methods described in this paper also allow for the PD to be detected while the switch gear is still live, omitting the need to disrupt power while detecting the PD location. The core principles chosen to detect PD in these conditions are radiometric signal detection. Results are presented showing the location ability both in simulation and live field conditions.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"562 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134065796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is also a growing trends on the use of smart phone compare to traditional desktop PCs for accessing the internet. On such limited device, a high quality speech compression for Quranic recitation is favorable. In this paper, we developed a high quality speech compression for Quranic recitation by modifying Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) algorithm. First, the characteristics of the Quranic recitation of all surahs was evaluated in which it was found that the voiced speech is more dominant compare to unvoiced speech. Next, we optimize CELP algorithm based on previous findings by modifying the original stochastic codebook. Instead of random Gaussian signal, we trained the codebook using LBG algorithm for Surah Al-Fatihah, and used the trained codebook for the whole Quran. Lastly, we evaluate the performance of the developed algorithm objectively using PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality). Results showed that our proposed algorithm performs better than the traditional CELP algorithm, in terms of PESQ score and processing time.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133250653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Having very small energy usually less than 1 V, needs a boost circuit to power up the device. This paper shows that the passive components of a conventional boost converter play an important role to boost very small voltage. This paper also presents that switching frequency effects to boost voltage. Transient analyses have been performed using PSpice simulation tool to check the circuit response to various parameter changes. The proposed circuit with components L=160 μH, RL=10 kΩ and switching frequency fS=1 kHz with duty cycle D=0.5 results optimum performance of the circuit. This voltage converter is suitable for vibration energy harvesting having low frequency applications in kHz range. The application of this converter is expected to be in automotive, healthcare and industrial field.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114391127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these transducers are known to have several drawbacks. This limits their widespread deployment in large numbers especially in high voltage applications such as substation equipment or overhead lines located in rural areas. Hence, a voltage transducer is proposed based on a novel exploitation of the electrical field distribution around the high voltage conductor. Numerical methods are used to determine the electric field distribution around the high voltage conductor and the transducer. The computed electric field is used to calibrate the proposed transducer. The computational results obtained are validated using a simplified analytical method.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125129631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed solar irradiance estimation method is derived using photovoltaic mathematical model. Therefore, photovoltaic module modeling is required to develop the proposed estimation method. The modeling includes the identification of photovoltaic module diode ideality factor using recursive iteration and series resistance identification using photovoltaic model equation. The reminding modeling parameters can be obtained from the given photovoltaic module manufacturer datasheet. With all the required parameters in place the solar irradiance can be estimated using equation derived from the photovoltaic model. The proposed solar irradiance estimation method is evaluated using a 80W 36 cells polycrystalline photovoltaic module in the field and the results are validated with a World Meteorological Organization certified second class pyranometer. This paper demonstrates that the solar irradiance can be estimated by the short circuit current output measured from the photovoltaic module with acceptable accuracy. This contributes to the elimination of the installation of expensive pyranometer.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125206102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pair of two-way radio was studied where a unit (a transmitter)was placed inside a wind tunnel and the other unit (a receiver)was placed inside the anechoic chamber in order to isolate it from external noise. A speaker was located at a distance near the transmitter to give an audio input to the radio while the wind was flowing towards the radio. Sound quality parameters of roughness, sharpness, loudness and articulation index were used to measure the effect of wind noise on the sound quality at wind speed of 2 and 6m/s. In order to measure the effect of wind noise on the intelligibility of the message output from the speaker, the articulation index was calculated for 0,2 and 6 m/s wind speed. The results show that the roughness and loudness of the wind noise increase with the speed and the sharpness decreases with the wind speed. The articulation index also decreases with the wind speed.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128690536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main constraint is the availability of only the samples of the output for measurement. The particular focus is on such linear time varying systems that can be transformed into linear time invariant systems through sinusoidal transformation. This converts the problem of tracking a constant signal into a sinusoidal signal. Typical to the sampled-data control problems, the control input is generated by a discrete controller along with a discrete observer for state and disturbance estimation. A realizable reconstruction filter, which is a reduced order specialized generalized hold device, connects the discrete controller with the continuous input of the system. The resultant linear time invariant system along with the realizable reconstruction filter is thus presented as a linear impulsive system. The rest of the problem is similar to the classical regulator theory. As an example the control of gyroscope in both perturbed and unperturbed scenarios is presented.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133050662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to determine optimum dispatch schedules for on-load tap changer (OLTC), distributed generator (DG) settings and large synchronous motors on the load and DG generation profile in a day. The proposed method minimizes the total operational cost (TOC) considering system active power losses and receiving power factor and improves the voltage profile using squared deviations of bus voltages. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method reduces the system active losses and voltage fluctuations and improve receiving power factor. In this paper, coordinated voltage and reactive power control method are proposed that adjust optimal control values of synchronous motors with constant power factor control, OLTC and AVR of DGs using dynamic programming (DP) with branch-and-bound (B&B) method. And finally we will show the effectiveness of the proposed method comparing to the before control using total operational costs and voltage deviation factor (VDF) as evaluation index. Eventually it could be attributed to reduce the total operational costs and improve the voltage profile in industrial power system for a whole day.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134343294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is concerned specifically with smart transformer monitoring. The problem of statistical indicators in the course of online transformer Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) evaluation is highlighted. Off-line and on-line applications of Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) are discussed in detail. A custom-made model transformer involving concentric LV and HV windings is fabricated and used as a test object. Its temperature and moisture content are changed in a controlled manner and their impacts on FRA responses are studied. To examine a real full-sized transformer, similar procedure is performed on a three-phase two windings core type transformer as another test object. Afterwards, statistical indicators are calculated using FRA data to clarify temperature and moisture influence on them. Deviation from the reference value for these indicators is discussed.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133759900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel speech enhancement algorithm using compressive sensing (CS) is different paradigm from compression technique with low-dimensional geometry for transmission or storage. The CS algorithm, can directly acquire compressed data signals and replace samples by more general measurements of the uniform rate digitization with signal sparsity model. Perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) is an objective evaluation of speech enhancement algorithm used to measure the enhanced speech quality. All provable good measurement, with random matrics in CS algorithm, can enhance speech signal. Objective evaluation on various dB SNR shows that the proposed algorithm exhibits better noise reduction ability over conventional approaches without obvious degradation of the speech signal quality.","PeriodicalId":182424,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Applications (ICSIMA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133979613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
