If you break down this system into its major physical components, it includes a motor, a drive or amplifier, possibly a brake, and an encoder. When it comes to mounting, the encoder requires the most thought. This paper explains the spatial, environmental, and mechanical reasons why different mounting methods exist, and how they can benefit the application. We'll also explore what happens when installations are done incorrectly.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123617306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are numerous researched methods for identifying rotor bar faults: motor current signature analysis, acoustic noise measurements, vibration monitoring, temperature monitoring, electromagnetic field monitoring, infrared recognition, radio frequency emissions monitoring, etc. The most frequently used method is called the Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA). It is based on a signal analysis of the motor current, obtained via a regular current transformer used for motor protection purposes. It is difficult to detect rotor bar failures by looking into the currents waveform-time domain analysis, however impact of rotor broken bars to the stator currents can be determined by analyzing spectrum of frequency distribution in the frequency domain. Many factors affect reliable detection of the motor broken bar; motor load, system frequency and motor speed, construction of the motor etc. A new algorithm takes into account all these factors to adapt to a changing operational condition of the motor. Also, by learning the healthy motor frequency spectrum signature, the detection of a broken rotor bar can be made even more deterministic. The new algorithm was extensively tested on the induction motors with different system and motor conditions-results of this testing are presented. Lessons learned from the field installations are presented as well.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121336589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper evaluates the effect of the condensate during the starting of a dryer section using the experimental curves reported by several authors, as well as using a dimensionless model of the input power as a function of the condensate quantity and roll velocity. Through the evaluation of a 9-cylinder dryer section for various condensate quantities and varying number of cylinders containing condensate, a comparison is made to the power requirements of several actual paper machine dryer sections undergoing various starting procedures. These comparisons indicate that if the % condensate (condensate volume/full cylinder volume × 100) in the range of 0.5% to 1%, or greater, is nominally assumed to be present, then the sizing of the section drive capacity must take into consideration the additional indrive load resulting from this condensate. Options are proposed to consider the effect of the condensate without increasing the TAPPI rated drive capacity (RDC) of dryer sections.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"888 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129904469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the starting requirements, motor manufacturers are forced to employ high resistivity rotor bars which lead to higher losses and lower motor efficiency. This paper will show that AFD offer the advantage of decreasing the energy consumption by eliminating the constraints of starting requirements. Short rise time voltage pulses produced by AFD may adversely affect the stator winding insulation and accelerate its aging process. The paper will discuss how motor manufacturers have addressed this problem by introducing surge resistant insulation materials, turn insulation and reinforced ground insulation. The voltage waveform harmonics of an AFD could also lead to higher motor temperature rise. Therefore, additional thermal consideration should be given. The paper will review the new IEC standards which define the stator winding insulation requirement when the induction motor operates with AFD. Another aspect discussed in the paper, related to the design of an induction motor coupled with an AFD, is how to minimize the magnetic noise that may be generated if higher frequency voltage harmonics are present in the AFD.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134263113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This information is critical in planning maintenance outages and in augmenting on-line vibration analysis. Traditionally, flux measurements have been done using flux probes installed on a stator wedge and a portable or permanently connected instrument. To achieve a reliable diagnostic, the signals from the flux probe had to be measured under different generator load conditions ranging from no load to full load. This requirement presented a serious obstacle in the application of this method on base load units where load adjustments are difficult. A new design of flux probe, installed on a stator tooth, and a novel approach in algorithms used to analyze measurements can help minimize the need for tests at different load conditions and still provide reliable diagnostics. This paper describes the implementation of new hardware and software and case studies that demonstrates the effectiveness of the new method in eliminating the need for load maneuvering.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114525651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermal-magnetic trip units in circuit breakers provide protection for overloads and short circuit faults in electrical distribution systems. The magnetic element protects against short circuit faults and a bimetal element protects against overloaded thermal conditions. Electronic trip units use microprocessors, electronic devices and software algorithms to provide the equivalent bi-metallic response of thermal-magnetic trip units. If the electronic trip unit does not contain unpowered thermal memory circuitry the protection is then not equivalent to the bimetal trip unit.","PeriodicalId":182346,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 2010 Annual Pulp & Paper Industry Technical Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130783126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
