Associated with a useful range of the solar spectrum is the rest unwanted irradiation, causing the temperature rise in the solar cells, which ultimately reduces the efficiency and power output of most of panels. Furthermore, dust settlement on the surface of panel, also referred to soiling, is another factor that reduces the efficiency, at least by shading. A novel, simple, cheap and robust system has been proposed in this study to mitigate the notorious effects of heat, as well as dust, through the use of forced air draft produced via a fan. The findings highlight that a cumulative power gain of at least 48.4 W under tested conditions can be achieved by implementing this system, on an array of solar panels constituting eight modules. Whereas, including the effect of natural wind in the analyses, further increases the power gain. The results obtained have been validated by the use of 3D finite element modeling, as well as through literature.","PeriodicalId":180557,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116943699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the instability of fuel prices and the stochastic nature of renewables imply that these systems cannot effectively supply the load demand with a good reliability. In this paper, an analysis of different energy components was performed in order to have a cost-effective and reliable energy system for supplying the load in an off-grid remote area. In the case studied, power evaluation of Hybrid off-grid System (HOS) shows that coupling wind turbines with PV panels decreases both total cost and pollution emissions of the system. Moreover, the Hybrid PV-Wind-Diesel system (PWDS) produces better results in comparison with PV-Diesel system (PDS), Wind-Diesel (WDS) and Diesel-only system (DS).","PeriodicalId":180557,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117309699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar reflectors, in particular, are sensitive to soiling and abrasion from sand and dust and might see their ability to reflect and concentrate light compromised. Whereas soiling is usually reversible with cleaning, the abrasion of the mirrors' surface is non-reversible and lead to a permanent loss in reflectance. However, a specific guidelines to predict the reflectance degradation of solar mirrors in sand and dust abrasion prone environments is yet to be defined. The work presented here is a first step towards defining a low cost, simple testing procedure to realistically predict the surface degradation of solar reflectors, due to sand abrasion, under arid and semi-arid conditions. An accelerated sand abrasion aging chamber was designed and constructed with the aim of improving the reliability and repeatability of experiments of already existing sand abrasion apparatuses. The sand abrasion chamber is based on the open circuit sand blower design, and comply with relevant guidelines of the U.S. Military's sand and dust abrasion standard: MIL-STD-810G. The parameters of the sand abrasion testing apparatus are the wind velocity, the sand concentration, and the time of exposure. Its dimensions are 185×56×44 cm. The preliminary testing campaign yielded good particles' homogeneity in the flow and sand injection control, confirming the success of the design. Further tests with mirrors, revealed an exponential loss in reflectance with increased exposure time. This finding is in agreement with earlier work on sand abrasion of reflective materials.","PeriodicalId":180557,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"390 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123961319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many reasons (safe, abundant, affordable…) to use phase change material (PCM) in this field. The PCM may play an important role in increasing efficiency of PV cells. This paper describes a detailed physical issue in order to understand the effect of PCM in keeping PV cell temperature close to ambient. The study is focused on modeling the heat transfer in a PCM domain by using two different methods in the aim to study the PCM effect on temperature evolution of the PV system. By comparing between the two methods studied, we found that due to a phase change and free convection, transient incompressible flow is taken into account to explain the dynamic variations of the velocity profile. Moreover, with some standard conditions of irradiation and heat flux on both sides of PV panel, a melt front has been tracked by the energy equation in which gives a good argument for the temperature evolution during phase change.","PeriodicalId":180557,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conference (IRSEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128563939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
