This is the case for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and the interest that they generate in applying this technology in remote sensing and data gathering in a wide wireless network. In another hand, it is clear that the use of mobile robots in a such network reduces the energy consumption for the static nodes, while forwarding data to a sink node and therefore extends the lifetime of the network. In this paper we attempt to demonstrate the advantage of integrating small scale drone in a terrestrial wireless sensor network, for environmental monitoring and data gathering.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115247548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intrinsic characteristics of these networks are the constant mobility and high dynamics. Furthermore, being based on vehicles, the number of network nodes tends to increase in a fast pace. All these characteristics combined with the fact that a vehicle does not always have direct communication with the core network, turns crucial the use of all available technologies and networks in the range of a vehicle, including multi-hop communications. This paper proposes an uplink manager for vehicular networks that offers multihoming, traffic differentiation and load-balancing, taking into account context-information to increase the network performance. The proposed uplink manager provides simultaneous connectivity and traffic in multiple networks and technologies, and also enables the support of vehicles with single and multi-hop connections available simultaneously. To provide such functionalities, several extensions have been performed to the control messages used in the mobility protocol to carry useful information needed to perform the uplink manager decisions. The proposed uplink manager has been tested in real networks and with real equipments. The obtained results show that it fulfils all proposed requirements, both in terms of load-balancing and traffic differentiation, without incurring any performance drop in terms of packet losses or delay.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"110 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131544506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an efficient power allocation scheme is derived for multiuser multiple input single output (MISO) downlink beamforming NOMA system to guarantee that successive interference cancellation (SIC) detection can remove completely the intra-cluster interference. In addition, a fairness-oriented user selection (NOMA-FOUS) algorithm is proposed to maximize the NOMA system sum rate and achieve high system fairness by selecting the two clustered users based on their NOMA data rate. Numerical results show that NOMA-FOUS algorithm provides better system sum rate, weak users sum rate and fairness index performance than that of the other user clustering algorithms with a little increased computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128331108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is important because of the global attention to the underwater communication applications. To this end, underwater antennas will play a significant role in ensuring good data rates and propagation distances for these applications. In this paper, the performance of three antennas, specifically, loop, dipole and J-pole is assessed through simulation for usage in fresh and sea water operating in the High Frequency (HF) band. The antennas were designed in FEKO, an electromagnetic simulation software and their performance is assessed in terms of bandwidth and directivity. The results obtained shows that the J-pole antenna has significant advantages in term of the measured parameters over the other antennas. Experimental results of the reflection coefficient of the J-pole antenna in fresh water are given that agree well with the simulation results.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130090454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, road topologies are expected to contribute to more occurrences of out-of-range transmissions, which lead to frequent disconnections. The current method to overcome such complex road environments (i.e., in a three-dimensional scenario) is through the introduction of relative angles as a weighting value applied to the forwarding scheme in Vehicular-to-Vehicular Urban Network (V2VUNet). This scheme avoids unnecessary participating vehicles and selects the proper vehicle as a relay. In order to show the performance of a V2VUNet, this paper analyzes and evaluates various communication models in several three-dimensional cases.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134364685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis includes both the physical (PHY) and medium access (MAC) layers. We investigate the trade-off provided by HARQ, which demands reduced transmit power for a given target outage probability at the cost of more accesses to the channel. Since the competition for channel access at the MAC layer is very expensive in terms of energy and delay, our results show that HARQ leads to great performance improvements due to the decrease in the number of contending nodes - a consequence of the reduced required transmit power. Counter-intuitively, our analysis leads to the conclusion that retransmissions may decrease the delay, improving the system performance. Finally, we investigate the optimum values for the number of allowed retransmissions in order to maximize either the throughput or the energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122757360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designing efficient forwarding scheme can reduce redundancy and collisions. Recently, we have proposed an Energy-Efficient Adaptive Forwarding Scheme (EEAFS) that uses 1-hop neighbourhood knowledge, in addition to a transmission power classification scheme to group mobile devices based on their transmission power level. Based on this classification scheme, gateway nodes that are located in the overlapping areas of different groups, are selected to forward the broadcast message. This paper has two main contributions to further improve the EEAFS. 1) Assigning a colour to each group of nodes in the network, to increases the awareness of the gateway nodes located between different groups of similar transmission power levels. 2) Developing a weight-based coordination approach between the gateway nodes to minimising the overlapping. This contributes to reducing the redundancy and collisions especially, in high dense regions. By using variable transmission power, we not only reduce the congestion, interference and conserve energy, but we also effectively involve the node's transmission power level in the forwarding decision-making process. Our solution is implemented and extensively evaluated by using ns-2. The simulation results show that the proposed broadcast technique is scalable and can significantly reduce collisions at the MAC layer by achieving up to 70 percent reduction in packet loss ratio. It also reduces end-to-end delay while consuming less energy.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129603187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, deploying relays or controlling the position of network nodes may impact the performance. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and other elevated platforms may improve the ground network performance when used as network relays, due to better Line-of-Sight (LoS) conditions. In addition, UAVs can easily move to better locations. This paper shows that positioning a UAV asymmetrically between two ground nodes could result in better communication services than a UAV placed at the center position between the ground nodes, given the use of stepwise adaptive modulation. The IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard, a popular Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) protocol with multi-rate capabilities, is employed for quantification of the effect. Simulations results show that the network performance can be lower with a UAV at the center between two (clusters of) ground nodes for certain geometries. For networks actively supported by UAV relays, this effect must be taken into consideration when choosing the location and when estimating the available capacity, e.g., for routing or call admission.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128726203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smartphones are the most adequate network nodes in many of these scenarios, but it is not straightforward to build a network with them. We extensively survey existing possibilities to build applications on top of ad-hoc smartphone networks for experimentation purposes, and introduce a taxonomy to classify them. We present AdHocDroid, an Android package that creates an IP-level MANET of (rooted) Android smartphones. AdHocDroid supports standard TCP/IP applications, providing real smartphone IEEE 802.11 MANET and the capability to easily change the routing protocol. We validate the MANET with off-the-shelf applications and experimental performance evaluation, including network metrics and battery discharge rate.","PeriodicalId":179998,"journal":{"name":"2017 Wireless Days","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114824026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
