A survey method was used to collect data from the ICSD members by using the Survey Monkey software. Quantitative data analysis was limited to frequency distributions, and responses to open-ended questions were analysed by using the qualitative content analysis method. Further, these results were presented in a workshop to generate ideas for the future directions and strategies. Overall, the analysis showed that the members had positive perceptions of the ICSD in terms of meeting their expectations and conduct of activities according to its mission. Some of the critical issues and the future directions for the ICSD included relooking at the leadership, finance, membership, social development vision and knowledge building by research and scholarly activities and networking, education/curriculum programmes, conferences and practice projects, and activism and increasing visibility. The article argues that addressing these and similar issues is critical in maintaining and sustaining consortiums/professional bodies such as the ICSD. The findings and analysis have implications for improving and strengthening the ICSD and similar professional bodies.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132709731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article situates solidarity initiatives and capability-focused outcomes that deliver enhanced livelihoods, social security and community development. The conceptual framing of social theory, social capital and social economy informs this case study with focus on the Ndong Awing Cultural and Development Association, North-West region, Cameroon. The analysis of semi-structured interviews and secondary sources suggests that solidarity networks such as njangis, cooperatives, quarter development unions and diaspora networks promote village-centric development. These overlapping networks generate scarce financial and human resources–essential packages for livelihoods and welfare. Emerging state policy is yet to calibrate these mechanisms of ground-up, mutual development drives. Galvanising these solidarity assets require meaningful co-productionand revamped state−community relations. This article offers a paradigm shift in how village groups mobilise income, capital and financing of village projects, nurtured through human development and agency.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133622216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need to strengthen primary, secondary and tertiary public healthcare systems was a clear message from the budget statement. The authors analyse the current budget in the context of chronic underinvestment in health and question whether this allocation will make any meaningful impact on the public health infrastructure as the impressive headline allocation appears to be more of a trick than a treat to the health sector.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131667033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It explores the association between the age of motherhood in Nepal (dependent variable) and conditions in a mother’s life, including her education, employment status, education of her husband, religion, age of the household head, gender of the household head, wealth index of the household, ownership of a bank account, decision-making around healthcare and region of residence (independent variables). Two models were tested using multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that improving the education of the parents and facilitating access to bank accounts can help increase the age of motherhood for women in Nepal. The findings inform policy for improving the reproductive health of women in the country.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132563833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aims to understand what effect working within the rural neighbourhood house sector has on employee and volunteer well-being. A phenomenological methodology was employed using semi-structured interviews. The qualitative interview data were analysed thematically to elicit emergent themes. Participants described how involvement in the sector both positively and negatively influenced their well-being. The two major themes, with associated sub-themes, that emerged from the participant interviews were: (a) ‘interconnectedness and community’; and (b) ‘burnout and stress’. Rural Australians have poorer health outcomes, with these often exacerbated through increased physical-work demands, family conflict and poor mental health. Rural neighbourhood houses are important organisations that engage and connect with those that may be disadvantaged, but this often comes at a cost to those who operate these vital services. A myriad of factors, including funding, isolation, unpaid work hours and lack of support, negatively contribute to the participants’ well-being. The article suggests solutions to improve the well-being of rural neighbourhood house employees and volunteers.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115187866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using the theme and content analysis method, it selects relevant chunks from the memoir and reflects on it. The analysis and reflection bring out Barack Obama’s knowledge, skills and approaches of community organising and social change. It argues that in addition to his own virtues and character, the basic premises and approaches of Obama’s community organising are similar to the values, knowledge and agenda of professional social work. Further, it suggests drawing lessons from Obama’s community organising experiences and exploring the potential for social work to expand at multiple levels of macro practice.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121006935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It critically discuses an evolving process of collective actions and associated reflections that progressively brought clarity on the theoretical aspects of the Freirean concepts. The process of the application and usefulness of the problem posing education, conscientisation and critical consciousness in transforming the lives of women and communities is reflectively narrated. The author argues that Freire’s transformative conceptualisations not only have the impact on the ‘oppressed’, but also on the ‘privileged’ who chose to work with them. Despite some limitations, the author, as a community practitioner/activist, finds Freire’s ideas as a gift in the political purpose and politics of her work. These reflections will be of use to community practitioners and members working in similar contexts.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125147371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
