It is shown that there are three sources of radiation exposure to the general public resulting from the operation of high-energy accelerators. In order of importance these are (a) the prompt radiation field, produced when the accelerator is operating; (b) the release of radionuclides and aerosols into the atmosphere; and (c) the production of radionuclides in the groundwater system around the accelerator. Of these three sources, (a) is dominant and typically exceeds (b) by about an order of magnitude. To date, experience at many accelerator laboratories has shown that the quantity of accelerator-produced radionuclides released to nearby groundwater systems (c) is either extremely small or immeasurable. The population dose equivalent resulting from the operation of several large high-energy facilities is compared.","PeriodicalId":17982,"journal":{"name":"Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory","volume":"72 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86316145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nicot","doi":"10.2172/1016011","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2172/1016011","url":null,"abstract":"Emission of carbon dioxide from fossil-fueled power generation stations contributes to global climate change. Storage of this carbon dioxide within the pores of geologic strata (geologic carbon storage) is one approach to mitigating the climate change that would otherwise occur. The large storage volume needed for this mitigation requires injection into brine-filled pore space in reservoir strata overlain by cap rocks. One of the main concerns of storage in such rocks is leakage via faults. In the early stages of site selection, site-specific fault coverages are often not available. This necessitates a method for using available fault data to develop an estimate of the likelihood of injected carbon dioxide encountering and migrating up a fault, primarily due to buoyancy. Fault population statistics provide one of the main inputs to calculate the encounter probability. Previous fault population statistics work is shown to be applicable to areal fault density statistics. This result is applied to a case study in the southern portion of the San Joaquin Basin with the result that the probability of a carbon dioxide plume from a previously planned injection had a 3% chance of encountering a fully seal offsetting fault.","PeriodicalId":17982,"journal":{"name":"Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78569686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
