Individuals in romantic relationships often report higher levels of overall life satisfaction and functioning. However, the experience of emotional distress or disability may impair one’s ability to benefit from the protective effects of a romantic dyad. Therefore, understanding the impact that individual mental health may have on perceptions of satisfaction in romantic relationships may be of importance. Additionally, the role that relationship type, such as committed vs. non-committed relationships, can have on assessments of satisfaction for individuals who experience BPD symptoms is of interest. 433 participants self-reported their experiences with BPD symptoms using the Borderline Symptoms List 23 [1] and relationship type (committed vs. non-committed). The Relationship Satisfaction Assessment [2]was completed to determine individuals’ happiness and fulfillment within their interpersonal relationships. Findings indicated that endorsement of BPD symptoms had a significant negative association with self-reported relationship satisfaction. Relationship type was also a significant indicator of relationship satisfaction. Thus, those in committed relationships reported higher levels of overall satisfaction than those in non-committed relationships. This research suggests that both the experience of certain mental health issues and commitment to a relationship may determine overall feelings of fulfillment in romantic relationships. Additional research is necessary to replicate and explore the impact of this association.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116472213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the Hispanic population, 19% live in poverty. This may be a problem because according to research, living in poverty affects people’s social networks and self-worth negatively and is strongly associated with psychological issues. This study examined the perceptions of practitioners of mental health treatment of Mexican Americans who were experiencing mental distress and were residing in the U.S.- Mexico border. Findings suggest clients self-diagnose and try medications (usually purchased in Mexico) that were recommended to them by family members and/or social networks. Additionally, the family and social network behave like their own health/mental health care network, a manifestation of the Mexican American value that one should take care of one’s own. Loved ones provide these suggestions or consejos to help those struggling with mental stress manage their mental health. Professional mental health care is usually the last resort, which clients consider only after other options have been exhausted. This study reveals a need to explore the so-called family and social network health care system within this culture.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117285858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hough","doi":"10.33790/jmhsb1100167","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33790/jmhsb1100167","url":null,"abstract":"This topic review paper provides a brief overview of factors considered in the determination of so-called ‘suicide by cop’ (SbC), including potential contextual signs of such an event. The summarization and analysis of the suicide by cop extant literature indicates a gap, and subsequent need, in commentary on content and viability of police training in this area. Within the United States, this phenomenon is often either unrecognized, or unremarkable in official reports subsequent to an officer involved shooting. It is important for law enforcement officers to be trained to recognize, when possible, the signs of an individual seeking self-harm by attempting to elicit the action from officers. While it is important to note that such potential recognition of self-harm-seeking behavior may inform responding personnel in fashioning an approach to the individual, this does not obviate the need to consider the safety of officers and bystanders first, as such incidents may rapidly unfold. Agency training, driven by written policy and prevailing law, should be based on empirical evidence, where available, and when utilization of such research does not seek to supersede other safety considerations. While law enforcement recruit academy curriculums in the United States have increased significantly in hours of classroom study, there is a limit to the practicality of training blocks on sundry topics. Additionally, within the U.S. context, laws and court decisions impose expectations regarding training requirements and limits of liability. The use of psychological autopsy investigation holds the potential to fill knowledge gaps about an event and provide a more complete contextual picture to many fatal force usage situation involving police. Future research is needed to examine behavior motivations, potentially using the psychological autopsy investigation method, and how results can enhance police training.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121485347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on research from evolutionary psychology, he argues that ethical egoists and their critics have typically committed the same core error. By imputing a false dichotomy between ‘selfishness’ and ‘altruism,’ all sides have obscured the motivational intricacy of human behavior and the moral nuance entailed. How much of your own needs and happiness should be sacrificed for those you love? Drawing on Aristotelian insight, the author concludes that this is one of the most confounding ethical quandaries in life--which no moral theory can conclusively resolve.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114368749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic altered the way these evaluations are conducted as virtual telehealth conferences became more frequently utilized. The purpose of this review is to identify screening practices of telehealth providers, describe assessment discrepancies used in telehealth versus in-person visits, and identify variance in EOD hospital admission rates. Methods: A systematic review of literature was conducted utilizing the PRISMA model. Five electronic databases were searched for articles related to suicide, EOD, and telehealth spanning from 2001 to 2021. Of the eight (n=8) articles returned by the search, three (n=3) met inclusion criteria. Results: Findings of this review reveal that there is virtually no research on standardized suicide screening tools used to make EOD determinations. Additionally, the research does not comment on discrepancies between suicide evaluations via telehealth or in-person. Research on telehealth evaluation and involuntary hospitalization rates is limited. Discussion: Little is described in the current research about the types of assessment tools used in the EOD process when conducted via telehealth. Overall, this review found that protecting citizens by telehealth EOD is noticeably under-researched.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132566363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the context of community of care model debate, this article examines the seclusion of students impacted by mental health. It is argued that the isolation of mental health students is a form of oppression and injustice that harms a student’s sense of belonging. Therefore, it is recommenced that Social Workers use critical reflection coupled with an intersectional approach as a tool to focus on the interplay and complexity of oppression, inequalities and injustices. The perceived stigma of mental health in school settings require a critical reflection tool, due to the extended isolation of students. This article applies critical reflection and intersectionality to understanding the ideal process of integration for mental health students in a school environment while examining: (1) Student Belonging, (2) Difference and (3) Community Care approach.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133273825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implemented in large part due to increasing racial tensions between military personnel and Korean nationals, and rising rates of venereal diseases among American soldiers, the Camptown Clean-Up Campaign held prostituted women that worked in the camptowns responsible for failing base-community relations. At the same time, national and international laws existed outlawing prostitution and prostitution-related activities. These laws also maintained that parties engaging in prostitution or related activities could be criminally punished. Using the theoretical concept of wartime [1], I argue that the world’s understanding of the Cold War as wartime justified this gross breech of national and international law by governments who utilized women and women’s bodies to fulfill their own self-interests.","PeriodicalId":179784,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121251620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
