All those who received the recommended 5-day course were rapidly cured without relapse; the skin lesions were virus-free after the 5th days of treatment. Five patients with malignant varicella involving several organs and who had only been treated for a few hours died. It is concluded that adenine arabinoside is a useful drug in VZ virus infections, although it has no immediate action. The monophosphate presentation, more soluble and requiring lesser amounts of solvent, is easier to administer and as effective as the ordinary presentation.</p>","PeriodicalId":17974,"journal":{"name":"La Nouvelle presse medicale","volume":"11 48","pages":"3547-50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18172095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sexual deficiency, which for a long time is the only sign of the disease, is partly due to inhibition of testosterone secretion by high prolactin levels but also, probably, to reduced conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone and, perhaps, to a direct effect of prolactin on the neurotransmitters involved in sexual activity. Eighty per cent of women with hyperprolactinaemia have reduced sexual drive and inability to reach orgasm; the underlying mechanisms are as yet unknown.
