As a supplement to the previous studies, the optimal sequence of demand regulation for various products is explored. The results show that demand side regulation would pose negative effect on both GDP and CO2 emissions. However, certain strategies can be adopted to decrease CO2 emissions at the minimum decrease in GDP. According to the optimal sequence analysis, a group of key final products, such as the metallurgy products, the nonmetal products, the metal products, and the chemical products should be firstly regulated. Most of these key products concentrate in the eastern and coastal regions in China. Our model can be used to aid policy makers in design of effective industrial restructuring policy to achieve the national emissions targets.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125240623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cultivation of food locally is necessary to drive the cost of food down. This can be done using the abundant groundwater source in the region, however, the energy cost of harvesting the water supply is very high and hence not presently utilised. While solar PV technology is readily available, PV solutions are much too expensive for small scale rural farmers. This research aims at developing a solar thermal powered Stirling pump that can be produced locally, using local resources to reduce irrigation costs and provide income, food and energy security in the region, by promoting independent farming through small-scale farms. In order to develop the Stirling pump, a Low Temperature Differential (LTD) Stirling engine has been modelled in 3D, simulated and investigated with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics with ANSYS 16.1 software. The Analysis is aimed at obtaining a true representation of the pressure, temperature and compression ratio that dictate the functioning of a Gamma type Stirling engine. This model developed can then be modified and improved upon to further boost the performance of the Stirling Engine to be integrated with a water pumping system to extract ground water for irrigation purposes.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126445890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also related to the progressive decay of communitarian sense and policy representativeness as generative factors of the city; to his economic bases transformation; to decentralization processes and loss of public spaces; to his increasing dimension and speculative land annuity phenomena; to his unsustainable energy needs and environmental impacts. Therefore, this crisis is summarizable as a systemical and sustainability one. But the crisis of the city is also due to the inadequacy of urban planning: the poor comprehension of city systemic nature and poor presence of sustainability measures, the formal rigidity of the top-down processes unable to manage the bottom-up self-organized transformations, lead to a lack of operability of its instruments. As a consequence, the perspectives of the study of the city have to be shifted from the urban structures to the related processes; from the urban components to the whole environment; from the juxtaposition of objects to social and cultural interactions. The most interesting trends in this direction seem to move toward urban regeneration processes through Digital Social Economy that, together with the use of Social Web Platforms, could make more publicly visible, shared and effectively participative the planning processes allowing a real involvement of citizens and communities. Aims of this study is to summarily describe these trends toward systemic urban planning processes, through the analysis of literature and examples, in light of a possible sustainable future of the human environmental system definable as city.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125923279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These measurements include the curve from voltage to the current of PV devices and several meteorological parameters such as global and direct irradiance, temperature level of the solar cells and spectral shape distribution of solar irradiance. The measurements are performed in an automated way by a stand-alone application that is able to communicate with a pair of multimeters and a bipolar power supply that are controlled in order to obtain the current–voltage pairs. In addition, several magnitudes, that can be configured by the user, such as irradiance, module temperature or wind speed, are incorporated to register the conditions of each measurement. Moreover, it is possible to attach to each curve the spectral distribution of the solar radiation at each moment. Independently of the source of the information, all these measurements are included in our own database. These data can be accessed through a public web site that can generate several graphics from the data.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129752253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The four cities that have been analysed are Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Rome. The consumption profile corresponds to a residential consumption of 20 kWh/day. We propose to use two parameters to this evaluation: the percentage of self-consumption (PV directly consumed / total PV produced) and the percentage of self-sufficiency (PV directly consumed / total consumption). Several hypotheses have been checked attending to the size of the installation and the availability of solar resource. The size corresponding to a zero energy building has been proposed as reference power; for this reference size, the energy supplied by the PV system is approximately equal to the consumption for a one-year period of time. Using this size as a reference, several different PV sizes ranging from 0.5 to 3 times this reference size have been analyzed. For all of them, the self-sufficiency and self-consumption factors have been estimated. We have found that the values of peak power necessary to get ZEB range from 4.8 to 7.2 kW and that the self-consumption and self-sufficiency factors are of 40 and 36 % respectively. For each location it has been analyzed the best PV size depending on the applying regulation, basically depending on whether it is possible to do net metering or it is possible to sell the energy injected to the grid.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130752505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These buildings are equipped with large windows, therefore it is necessary a solar control strategy to ensure thermal and visual comfort and contain energy demand. Furthermore the older buildings have heavy masonry, in these cases the problem is where it is more convenient to place an additional layer of insulation: inside or outside the buildings opaque envelope elements. This work is aimed to explore, by means of computer simulations, the effects of various retrofit strategies on primary energy demand and general comfort conditions. The examined strategies are characterized by different positions of the additional insulation and various solar control devices. At present, the case studies consist in two school buildings in the city of Bologna in the North of Italy. In order to assess the influence of internal gains and time profile of use, other possible intended uses for the same buildings, such as offices or dwellings, were simulated.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128256597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Industrial energy efficiency will play an important role in meeting those goals as well as becoming a competitive advantage due to reduced costs for companies. The aluminium industry is energy intensive and uses fossil fuels both for energy purposes and as reaction material. Additionally, the aluminium industry uses significant amounts of electricity. The electrolysis process in the primary production of aluminium is the most energy- and carbon-intensive process within the aluminium industry. The aim of this paper is to study the effects on primary energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and costs when three energy efficiency measures are implemented in the electrolysis process. The effects on the primary energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and costs are calculated by multiplying the savings in final energy use by a primary energy factor, emissions factor and price of electricity, respectively. The results showed significant savings in primary energy demand, greenhouse gas emissions and cost from the implementation of the three measures. These results only indicate the size of the potential savings and a site-specific investigation needs to be conducted for each plant. This paper is a part of a research project conducted in close cooperation with the Swedish aluminium industry.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123477527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This renovation should be in line with the policy targets to reduce the energy use of buildings by 2050. As such thorough renovation scenarios require a high investment cost; a stepwise approach is often implemented. It is important to ensure that the overall investment cost for such a step by step approach is not (much) higher than an “in-depth at-once renovation”. This paper reports on the development of a method to support social housing companies in making a cost-optimal renovation planning for their building stock. Whereas current research focuses on net present value and payback time, this paper considers the life cycle cost for the evaluation of the investments, taking into account: (1) available financial resources over time, (2) various credit facilities over time and (3) various technical options leading to different energy savings. To check consistency and applicability, the method is tested on four case studies. Despite some uncertainties in this early development stage of the method, it is possible to draw some first conclusions based on the assessment of one case study. Since the results of the LCC assessment depend on the assumed economic parameters and expected service life of the building, those parameters have to be estimated with caution. Instead of implementing similar renovation strategies to all buildings, it would be advisable to do a Life Cycle Cost assessment per renovation project to get insight in the efficiency of the renovation strategy in order to use the limited budget of social housing companies more effectively.","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130609639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As is well-known, the carbon footprint of Oil is half-again as large, and the footprint of Coal is twice as large as that of Gas. Price sensitivities also imply that Gas producers bear relatively little of the total tax burden. As a result of the smaller tax on Gas, structured vector auto-regression (SVAR) simulations of a carbon tax show demand for Oil falling, with a rush for natural Gas. These simulations show that a modest ($40 per metric ton) carbon tax can be introduced gradually, avoiding price instability and achieving greater substitution into Gas than a tax ‘shock.’","PeriodicalId":177785,"journal":{"name":"WEENTECH Proceedings in Energy","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125151711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
