The antenna was processed on a thin polyimide substrate (68 um thick, 0.0038 /spl lambda/g) with a bottom ground plane. A vertically interconnected wideband stripline balun was used to feed the antenna. Both simulation and measurement results showed that performance of the slotted spiral antenna on these substrates was improved when the slot width was reduced and became comparable to the substrate thickness. Return loss of less than -20 dB was measured for the spiral antenna throughput 2-18 GHz with the lowest value of -49 dB at 10.8 GHz. Uniform broadside radiation pattern was obtained with a gain variation of -12 /spl sim/ -1 dB. Also, near field power distribution was measured for a PCB version of the slotted spiral antenna with similar design parameters.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. To maximize radiation efficiency, the load impedance must be reactive to avoid ohmic losses. A simple means to implement the reactive loads is with varactors. This places further constraints on the load in that the load impedance must not only be imaginary but also negative. In this paper, prior work is reconsidered in light of this practical constraint. Simulations are performed to evaluate the beam steering and interference nulling of a hexagonal array with these constraints. The proposed method features that an RF input stage converts the RF input voltage to current, which is coupled to the core of Gilbert Cell using current source transistor at bottom and furthermore reduces the supply voltage. The LO frequency is at 5.6 GHz. The designed mixer requires only a 1.5 V supply voltage and consumes 6.89 mW DC power. At 5.8 GHz, this mixer has single-sideband noise figure (SSB NF) of 14.3 dB, with input return loss of -18.6 dB, third-order input intercept point (IIP3) of -2.94 dBm, and conversion gain of 7 dB.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. Power control error is incorporated in this model. Outage probability can be calculated using the incomplete beta function and system capacity can be obtained using a simple integral. The effects of the power control error and the maximum fraction of base station power allocated to the mobile station on the outage probability and system capacity are discussed. Two different variable resonant circuits are connected between two identical quarter-wave-length transmission lines, resulting in an all-pass network. The size of the phase shifter is reduced by employing /spl Pi/-section lumped-element networks, and thus the total size is only 2.4 mm x 2.6 mm. The optimum values of the inductor and the maximum phase shift are discussed with respect to the different capacitance and tunability (C/sub max//C/sub min/) of the capacitor at the series resonant circuits. The measured performance of the phase shifter shows a phase shift of more than 147/spl deg/ is achieved with an average insertion of 3.2 dB from 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz. The traffic inherent to WSNs is however, variable and highly correlated. We analyze the energy-efficiency with the varying traffic in such networks. We expect sensor nodes to save more energy by using an adaptive scheme for varying traffic conditions giving robustness to different application scenarios. A random timing scheme for optimizing the radio on/off time-interval by adapting to traffic loads is discussed. For CDMA cellular base stations, we have designed a distributed configuration of array antenna, which is synchronized among two-dimensional arrange of sub-array antenna modules. This configuration has a capacity to accept flexible number of or arrange of sub-array antenna modules. All modules that formed array antenna are synchronized to make appropriate beam forming by the method of one-by-one addition between each adjacent module. We have built a prototype of this distributed array antenna with our original continuous auto-calibration circuits. The experimental performance of this calibration circuit was 0.1 dB and 1-degree accuracy. The prototype array antenna has experimentally performed less than 2 dB ripple and 11.3-degree roll-off (between -3 dB point and -20 dB point) of sector wide beams and 12.7-degree beam width (-3 dB) of user dedicated narrow beams.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. The loss of orthogonality among subcarriers causes inter-carrier interference (ICI), which affects both channel estimation and detection of OFDM data symbols. Channel estimation error degrades the performance of coherent receiver limiting capacity, data rate and performance of the overall OFDM system. This paper proposes a novel frequency-domain channel estimator, which mitigates the effects of ICI by jointly finding the frequency offset and channel frequency response (CFR). Unlike conventional channel estimation techniques, where ICI is treated as part of the noise, the proposed approach considers the effect of frequency offset in estimation of CFR. A binary search algorithm is used to find the present frequency offset and CFR jointly. Variance of the frequency offset estimator and mean-square error (MSE) performances for conventional least-squares (LS) estimator and the proposed method are obtained using computer simulations. The variance of the jointly estimated frequency offset is found to be very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound. It is shown that the proposed method outperforms LS channel estimator especially in ICI dominated situations.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. The Black hole attack is an important problem that could happen easily in ad hoc networks especially in popular on-demand protocols like the ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing (AODV). Prior research in ad hoc networking has generally looked into the routing problem in a non-adversarial network setting, assuming a reasonably trusted environment. This paper proposes a collaborative architecture to detect and exclude malicious nodes that act in groups or alone. The focus is on the network layer, using the ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing (AODV) protocol as an example.
