A Monte Carlo based production cost simulation model is introduced in the paper. The model closely simulates actual system operation processes and takes system random behaviors into account. A simplified unit commitment method is created to fit the simulation for reliability evaluation purpose. The effects of wind forecast error is addressed in the model by applying forecasted value in day-ahead unit commitment and actual value in real-time operation. An Auto-Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) based process is designed to automatically perform day-ahead hourly wind generation forecasting through the simulation period. Numerical results of a 50-unit system case study are presented.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"1 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132548653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The situation of imperfect competition arising when one of the Gencos is large enough to exert market power is considered in detail, showing what bidding behaviors are to be expected when such a market arrangement occurs. The impact that inter-area transmission system congestions may have on the mechanism of system pricing is also addressed. The bidding problem faced by each Genco is formulated as a strategic multi-player game in which the choice between different bidding levels and energy amounts to be sold at the market has to be made. The large size of the problem due to the number of competitors and to the presence of transmission constraints makes the application of classical game theory troublesome. Therefore, an agent based method belonging to the category of coevolutionary genetic algorithm was selected for the solution of this problem. Test cases illustrate the different strategies that the Gencos may implement to optimize their performance at the day-ahead market. Beside some small didactical examples, the situation of the Italian day-ahead market is considered in detail.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130151659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The wide-area coordinating controller (WACC) utilizes remote signals to compensate the interactions between SVC and generator variables, therefore it provides an additional damping of both local and inter-area oscillations. However time delays introduced by remote measurement and control signals may affect the performance of the controller. This paper focuses on the impact of time delay on power oscillation damping and the application of Smith prediction approach to preserve power system performance with large time delays. Anderson and Farmer four-generator nine-bus power system is used to illustrate delay effect on mode damping and the advantage of delay compensation. Simulation results show that generator speeds and SVC bus voltage oscillations are still well damped for various time delays with the Smith predictor approach.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130218814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper addresses electric vehicles as an electric load only and does not consider the potential of the vehicle being a generation source. It also only addresses the substation, primary and distribution transformer impacts. It does not consider impacts on the secondary system. The method uses a statistical clustering algorithm to identify a set of representative feeders for the electric utility system, each representing a certain subset of the utility feeder system. This set of representative feeders is analyzed over a series of electric vehicle market penetration scenarios from 0 to 100%, in order to determine the expected impacts on loading, losses, voltage and reliability performance and power quality that each feeder will see. Then, distribution system capacity upgrades that are required to serve uncontrolled EV loads in each area, as well as the benefits that could if EV loads were limited or re-scheduled via demand response are assessed for each. Results from these representative feeder scenario studies are then used to estimate the impacts, control and mitigation needed, and performance expected across the entire utility feeder set. This method has been used to plan for increasing amounts of electric vehicle loads on several utility systems in the USA. Results from one case study are discussed.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"36 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134004770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, induction motor is considered as a dynamic load which causes voltage stability problems in power systems. This paper presents an analysis to investigate the critical parameters of power systems with dynamic loads for stability studies. To investigate the critical parameters, a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system with induction motor load is considered in this paper. The dynamic characteristics of a large system are also analyzed based on these critical parameters. Here, the system is linearized about an operating point using Taylor series expansion method. By analyzing the participation factors and eigenvalues of the considered system, the role of critical parameters is investigated for a large system.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134063798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a new approach to transformer fault diagnosis is introduced based on the idea of exchanging information with explicit, formal and machine accessible descriptions of meaning by using the Semantic Web. An ontology model is developed for accurate and efficient fault diagnosis for power transformers. Through the use of this model, various transformer fault diagnostic methods can be integrated to describe and inference among fault phenomena, fault sources and causes of faults. The proposed ontology model provides a dedicated semantic model for knowledge representation and information management concerning fault diagnosis of power transformers.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131612426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transmission pricing must be non-discriminatory, transparent, economically efficient, and allow full recovery of costs. In the case of electricity transmission system, economic efficiency implies promoting an optimal utilization of existing network, efficient siting of new generations and loads and promoting transmission investments. These characteristics require that the transmission circuits that pertain to each transaction must be identified and their costs properly allocated among users. Therefore cost allocation is a major issue in transmission access pricing and has given rise to a lot of methodologies. This paper presents an overview of MW-Mile method of transmission cost allocation. Under MW-Mile method there are a number of variants i.e. absolute, dominant and reverse in relation to how the cost of each circuit is allocated to the various users of the circuit. In India, with the enactment of Electricity Act, 2003 lay down the guide lines towards the transmission tariff sensitive to distance, direction and quantum of power flow.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132619715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
