This new information does not come without a cost, however, and one potential barrier to the effective utilization of this new data source is the increased amount of information transmission and storage capability these devices require. One way to mitigate the increased storage requirements of synchrophasor data is to compress the data, although this compression should not come at the cost of reduced accuracy. This paper proposes a new method for the lossless compression of voltage magnitude and phase data in which known characteristics of the power system are used to improve upon common, off-the-shelf compression techniques. The method is evaluated with real and simulated PMU data to show its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"253 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122073806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, issues with wind power connection to the existing power grid are discussed, with particular emphasize on system operations and planning aspects. In addition to power system analysis, implications of wind power impacts on the electricity market operations are also discussed. From power system operations, wind power introduces stability and control challenges which are reflected in frequency control and voltage control ancillary services in a market environment. From system planning point of view, the increasing number of wind generation connection requests from generators requires a more systematic approach toward system studies on the connection impact on transmission system planning. The research presented in this paper focus on the wind power practice in Hong Kong and Australia. Case studies based on data from Australia and Hong Kong are given in this paper to highlight some of the issues and methodologies relevant to wind power impact studies. Issues on wind power impact on system operations and planning (general discussion paper, key words: wind power optimal dispatch with other generating resources, wind forecast utilization, network frequency control ancillary services, voltage control ancillary services, TAS example, HK example; key techniques: operational schemes, optimization methods, security constraints, impact on market - constraint impact; network connection options analysis;)","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122217793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electromechanical oscillations are natural responses of synchronous generators to a mismatch in their net torques, and thus, are present in every distribution system equipped with such generators. In this work, a methodology is established to analyze the induced phenomena, which are mainly related to voltage fluctuations, providing a complete framework for a thorough power quality analysis concerning the electromechanical oscillations. This methodology is used to the power quality assessment of a real power distribution system from a Brazilian utility. The obtained results show that electromechanical oscillations in distribution systems can indeed be a significant source of power quality problems, specially regarding voltage fluctuations.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129816375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Brazilian hydro power system is formed by hundreds of reservoirs capable of multi-year storage capacity. Historically, this has been measured in the Brazilian Power System in terms of the duration of the critical period, which in turn is obtained from optimization models that calculate the firm energy (FE) of hydroelectric systems. These models, however, only represent the hydroelectric system explicitly and do not take into account the synergy between hydro and thermal plants. This synergy can be an important aspect in defining the storage capacity of the hydrothermal system. The objective of this article is: (i) to define a methodology for measuring the regularization capacity of a generation system; (ii) to analyze by this measure the current regularization capacity of the Brazilian system; and (iii) to analyze the impact of the development of large-scale run-of-the-river hydro plants that are in the pipeline to start commissioning in the next years.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"219 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128615494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, potential changes to the classification and role of wind generators in the Single Electricity Market (SEM), the market for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, are examined. The effect of wind generators opting to become price-making and the potential for wind generators to provide positive spinning reserve is investigated. By submitting bids for available generation, price-making wind generators can increase their revenues from the market and influence the average electricity price. Results also show reduced emissions and systems costs arise in allowing wind to provide spinning reserve.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130324299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a preliminary step of introducing PMUs on a larger scale, extensive measurements campaigns, primarily dedicated to power quality purposes, were conducted within medium and low voltage grid in Romania. The extremely high volume of data was stored in a special dedicated database, from which information regarding events can be retrieved together with their associated local time stamp. In this paper, data resulting from several voltage waveform long-term monitoring campaigns are studied as to highlight their relevance both to the steady-state conditions and event identification of the distribution grids. Communication issues are also highlighted, as most of the monitoring units are located in remote areas, without a dedicated physical layer for data transfer.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129218142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a machine may be realized by connecting the stator and rotor windings of a slip-ring induction machine in series, but with reversed phase sequence. The advantage of the machine configuration is high power density and high-speed operation. Both phasor diagram and time-stepping finite element analysis may be used for prediction of the generator performance. Regulations should provide interventions at the system level (transmission and distribution networks) and the local level at the point of common coupling between utilities and customers. This paper proposes an integrated approach for overall voltage quality regulation; in particular, it focuses on regulation at the system level, which seems to be widely applicable. The regulation structures proposed for system regulation use global indices to characterize the voltage quality. A numerical application supports the theoretical considerations.","PeriodicalId":177545,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES General Meeting","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130593184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
