It is known that HRTFs contain spatial cues allowing individuals to localize sounds. Inter-aural phase and level differences, and high-frequency magnitude variations, are among the most common cues. While these cues require detailed analysis of specific HRTFs, in the current paper a new measure is proposed, based on the distribution of the singular values of the HRTF matrix, effectively representing the amount of information contained in the HRTFs as a function of frequency and arrival direction. This measure is generic, encompassing all cues in a single quantity. First, the validity of the proposed measure is justified theoretically. Then, the proposed measure is validated against empirically known results of human localization in the horizontal and median planes. The comparison is performed by taking into account two different aspects: (1) whether the information contained in the HRTFs is monaural or binaural, and (2) the variation of the minimum audible angle (MAA) and other localization measures as a function of azimuth and elevation. The results show that the proposed measure is in good agreement with the established theory of human sound localization and can be used as a predictor of the potential performance of human sound localization and of human-like systems such as humanoid robots.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122395107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve a precise diagnosis, the physician must carefully examine the quantity, location, and relations between the ECG signal elements, with emphasis given to the atrial electrical activity (AEA) wave characteristics. Nevertheless, in some cases the AEA-waves are hidden in other waves, and in order to classify the correct arrhythmia an invasive procedure is performed. We propose a fully automated computer-based method for arrhythmia classification, based on our recently developed AEA detection algorithm, combined with two extracted rhythm-based features and a clinically oriented set of rules. Twenty-nine patients presenting atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia, atrioventricular reentry tachycardia, sinus tachycardia, atrial flutter, and sinus rhythm were studied. The arrhythmia classifier achieved 92.2% accuracy, 83.9% sensitivity, and 94.9% specificity.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122913119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extraction of the relevant information is crucial for improving the signal to noise ratio in order to get efficient tools for clinical purposes. The Spatio-Temporal Parcellation (STEP) algorithm characterizes a single subject and a group by set of events. Event is defined as an extreamum point in the spatio-temporal amplitude space and its associated surroundings. Clustering is applied on all events of all subjects in order to get the group characteristics. Two groups of normal subjects underwent the auditory oddball task. By implementing the STEP algorithm, it was possible in both groups to successfully differentiate the evoked responses to the Novel Vs. Target stimuli with statistical significance. The STEP algorithm holds promise as a tool for diagnosis, follow-up and drug development of different neurological conditions.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133165105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to 4×4 and 8×8 transforms utilized in earlier video coding standards, the proposed HEVC standard suggests the use of larger transform sizes including 16 × 16 and 32×32 transforms in order to obtain higher coding gains. Further, it also proposes the use of non-square transform sizes as well as the use of the discrete sine transform (DST) in certain intra-prediction modes. The decision on the type of transform used in a given prediction scenario is dynamically made, to obtain required compression rates. This motivated the proposed digital VLSI architecture for a multitransform engine capable of computing 16×16 approximate 2-D DCT/DST transform, with null multiplicative complexity. The relationship between DCT-II and DST-II is employed to compute both transforms using the same digital core, leading to reductions in both area and power. Closed-form relationship between the 16×16 transform and arbitrary smaller sized transform is presented, enabling the usability of this architecture to compute transforms of size 4 · 2P × 4 · 2q where 0 ≤ p, q ≤ 2.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132346412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A particular application of this algorithm is the identification of a physical danger to babies, such as situations in which parents leave their children in vehicles. The proposed algorithm is based on two main stages. The first stage involves feature extraction, in which pitch related parameters, MFC (mel-frequency cepstrum) coefficients and short-time energy parameters are extracted from the signal. In the second stage, the signal is classified using the k-NN algorithm and is later verified as a cry signal, based on the pitch and harmonics information. In order to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in real world scenarios, we checked the robustness of the algorithm in the presence of several types of noise, and especially noises such as car horns and car engines that are likely to be present in vehicles. In addition, we addressed real time and low complexity demands during the development of the algorithm. In particular, we used a voice activity detector, which disabled the operation of the algorithm when voice activity was not present. A database of baby cry signals was used for performance evaluation. The results showed good performance of the proposed algorithm, even at low SNR.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134410594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the framework of the research, a band selection method is developed in order to correctly detect a specific gas, using few of the hundreds of spectral bands available in the data. It shows that for a synthetic cube, using a correlation matrix built only from non-gas pixels, the detection improves as more spectral bands are in use, but with relatively few bands we still get good detection.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124322498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assessment of these films for biosensing and molecular detection has been investigated by our group recently using surface Plasmon resonance (SPR), surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Using columnar thin film (CTF) as the transducer layer in SPR sensors enhances both the angular and spectral sensitivity of the sensor. Sculptured thin films (STFs) made of different materials, shapes, sizes, orientations, porosities, and deposited on different substrates were examined as SEF and SERS detection platforms. The optimal features of STFs were examined to obtain the highest enhancement of SERS and SEF. The potential of these films for biosensing and bimolecular detection was demonstrated. Stability of the films was noticed over a period of one year without significant degradation.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131696903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The buildings' density and height in such environments block the signals from many of the satellites. In this work, we present a novel yet simple approach for tackling this accuracy problem. The novelty of the suggested method lies in analyzing insufficient LOS to satellites and improving the estimated location using few shadow matching methods. Given an estimated location of the GNSS device and given the satellite signal-strength, the algorithm calculates in real-time invalid points inside the ROI (Region Of Interest). This approach reduces the ROI to a fraction of its original size. Using both simulation and field experiment we have shown that the suggested method can improve existing GNSS devices accuracy in urban canyons. Moreover, in urban regions with accurate 3D building map the positioning accuracy might break the 1 meter accuracy bound.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131881888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the high frequencies the array performance is limited by spatial aliasing. In this paper we present a method to extend the bandwidth of the array through optimal aliasing cancellation. The advantage and novelty of the proposed method is that aliasing cancellation is achieved through signal processing without physically modifying configuration of the spherical microphone array. In this work we show that by taking into account the expected aliasing pattern with respect to the given array sampling scheme, a beamformer which suppresses the grating-lobes can be designed. This beamformer achieves a higher directivity-index at frequencies previously considered as out of the microphone array operating range, therefore increasing the overall frequency range of operation. A simulation example with a 32 elements spherical microphone array illustrate the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133681194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These energies are typically computed as the integral of electrical pulses generated the interaction of Gamma photons with a known semiconductor detector. Due to the finite resolution of the detector, close electrical pulses tend to overlap; this phenomenon, known by the practitioner as pileup effect, yields a severe distortion of the energy spectrum. We present in this contribution a method for pileup attenuation, in order to correct the main distortions caused by the pileup effect. This method can be decomposed in two steps. First, we compute a sparse representation of the signal by means of LASSO in order to estimate the arrival times of each individual electrical pulse and the radioactive source activity. The second step consists in estimating the pulse individual energies by means of another iteration of LASSO, with a smaller value of its sparsity parameter, and plug the obtained values into a standard nonparametric kernel estimator to obtain a corrected energy spectrum. We illustrate the performances of the suggested approach on signals stemming from a High Purity Germanium detector, with a medium activity.","PeriodicalId":177385,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE 27th Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133393609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
